Vancouver, B.C. 'World', Feb. 19 - The friends of George E. Berteaux, ex-president of the Board of Trade, were shocked Sunday to hear of his death. Mr. Berteaux was about town as usual Friday and when in the 'World' office on that morn. appeared to be hale and hearty. He was at the theatre Friday eve. and did not complain of being unwell until 1 o'clock Saturday morn. when he commenced to spit blood. The heamorrhage became more severe and a physician was sent for, who pronounced it to be a case of heamorrhage of the liver. The severe attacks of heamorrhage occurred at intervals up to 6 o'clock Sunday morn. At 11 o'clock he took his medicine and said that he thought he would lie over and take a sleep, and a few moments after that he was dead. Mr. Berteaux was 49 years of age and was a native of Cornwallis, N.S. where he has a sister living. Another sister resides in St. John, N.B. where for several years Mr. Berteaux was engaged in business before coming to Vancouver and where he married Miss Quinton, sister of C.H. He took an active interest in the Board of Trade to the presidency of which he was elected, following John Hendry in 1891. A brother of the deceased, C.W. Berteaux, is in the shipping trade in New York. The funeral will leave deceased's late residence, Burrard Street, at 1 o'clock, Tuesday, services being conducted at the house prior to that hour by Rev. E.P. Flewelling, rector of St. Paul's. [7]
