Notes for Abraham Greenawalt

We are researching Abraham Greenawalt (c 1745 to 1812-1815). We suspect that his father may have been Abraham Greenawalt, who came to America in 1740.

1740 Abraham Greenawalt, age 40, came to America on the ship Lydia, captain James Allen, from Rotterdam by way of Dover. [1] [2] [3] Landed in Philadelphia on September 27, 1740 at age 40, perhaps with his family including sons Christopher and Abraham. Many other Greenawalt and Grunewald men also immigrated. There were several Greenawalt families living in Pennsylvania in the late 1700s. Abraham was a common name in the Greenawalt family. [4]

Historical records indicate various spellings of the Greenawalt Family name including: Grunewal, Grunewalt,Greenewald, and Greenawalt. Abraham and his family settled in the Lancaster County. Manor Township, Millersville area, of PA.

Abraham Greenawalt II, son of Abraham Greenawalt I, was born in Germany in 1724 and died 5/8/1815 . Abraham II first wife was Elizabeth Knight married in 1759 and his 2nd wife was Susanna Weyland married 11/3 /1766 at the First Reform church Millersville, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Susanna was born in 1746 in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. and died between 1812-1815. Abraham II served in the Revolutionary war as a private 8th class in the Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Militia Manor Township 1777/1778 under Captain Ziegler's 5th Company.

Johan Philip Greenawalt, son of Abraham Greenawalt I, was born in America 6/17/1756 and died 7/17/1834. He served in the revolutionary war as lieutenant 2nd battalion Lancaster County Militia. Johan Philip's son was Phillip Lorentz Grunewald of Lebanon Township Lancaster County, Pennsylvania who served as an officer in the Revolutionary war. Philip Lorentz married Maria Margaret Fosser. [This cound be an error. Johan Philip is unlikely to be Abraham's son]

Abraham has been named as a son of Johanes Mathes Grunewald (1672-?) and Mariae Catharinae Söntgens (1676 Switzerland-1765 Lindlar, Rheinland, Germany).

Anna Margarethe Schnellbacher has been named as the spouse of Abraham Greenawalt.

1785 Michael Grenewalt was taxed as a freeman in Manheim Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [5]

1779 Henry Kreenawalt, butcher, was taxed for 1 house and 1½ lots in York Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [6]
