Research Notes:

We are researching the family of Frederick Ruhl, who dated his will in 1810 in Shrewsbury Twp, York County, naming son Henry Ruhl. Frederick Ruhl may have also lived in Codorus Twp, which is adjacent to Shrewsbury Twp, in the south of York County, Pennsylvania bordering Maryland. We suspect the documents in Codorus and in Shrewsbury refer to the same person named Frederick Ruhl.

Frederick reportedly married twice. Both wives were from Hellam Twp, which is now on the north-eastern border of York County. There is a discrepancy in the death date of second wife, Catherine, daughter of Henry Kann, who was deceased when Henry wrote his will in 1796, but Catherine was the wife of Frederick Ruhl in a deed dated 1802 and Catherine was alive when Frederick wrote his will. Did Frederick marry three times?

We do not know if Frederick Ruhl was related to Peter Ruhl [89]. Frederick Ruhl could have been a son of Peter Ruhl, whose known descendants lived in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. In 1779, Frederick was named guardian of the children of Clement, son of Peter Ruhl. In 1781, Frederick Ruhl was on the tax list in both Codorus Twp and Shrewsbury Twp. Grand-daughter Susannah Ruhl married Adam Hoffman of Codorus Twp.

1734-36 Henry Bann [Bahn?], Nicholas Kuns [Kann?] and Jacob Welshover [Welshdance?] and John Hendricks were involved in the land dispute around Kreutz Creek, Hellam Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [90]

Baptisms of three children of Frederick Ruhl, perhaps a different person, were recorded in the Goshenhoppen Catholic Church Registers (1741-1764):

1782 M. Anna Ruhl, daughter of Frederick Ruhl and wife Anna Schorb, was born on April 26 and was baptized with sponsors John Els and M. Anna Schorb, grandmother of the child. [91] [92]

1784 Conrad Ruhl, son of Frederick Ruhl and wife Margaret, was born on March 3. He was baptized with sponsors Conrad Welsch and wife. [93] [94]

1788 Salome Elizabeth, daughter of Anna Maria Schorb, was baptized on February 6, with sponsor Salome Elizabeth Schorb. [95] [96]

1774 Robert Freeland sold land to Daniel Kauffman, perhaps near Pleasant Ridge, on September 3. [97]:

This Indenture made the third Day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and seventy four, between Robert Freeland of the Township of Shrewsberry in the County of York and Province of Pennsylvania of the one part, and Daniel Kurfman of the County of York aforesaid of the other part. Witnesseth that the said Robert Freeland for and in consideration of the sum of two hundred and fifty pounds lawful money of Pennsylvania to him in hand paid by the said Daniel Kurfman ... hath granted ... all the following described two tracts of land situate ... in the township of Shrewsbury... Beginning at a marked white oak ... containing sixty four acres and a half ... the other beginning at a marked white oak .... containing one hundred and thirty nine acres and one quarter ... the first of which said tracts, being surveyed and laid out unto John Freeland, the father of the said Robert Freeland in pursuance of a Warrant bearing the date the eighteenth day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fifty three, and the other in pursuance of an application or order of survey granted unto the said John Freeland, bearing date at Philadelphia the ninth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty seven. Numbered 3401 and the same tracts which the said John Freeland by his Deed Poll, bearing date the nineteenth Day of April last granted and conveyed unto the said Robert Freeland." Witenssed by Baltzer Koller and Henry Miller.
