Notes for Peter Gut

1731 Peter Good, Mennonite, lived at Michelfeld, Baden, in November. He was a member of the Immelhauserhof Mennonite congregation. [1] Immelhäuserhof, Germany, is shown between Sinsheim and Hilsbach on this 1813 map. [2]

Jane Best and Richard Warren Davis suggest that Peter Good, member of the 1731 Immelhauserhof Mennonite congregation [4], was the father of the 1727 immigrant Peter Good, and was a son of the Peter Gut of Michelfeld who was age 41 in 1672. [5] [6]

Several Good immigrants came to Pennsylvania in the early 1700's. Genetic testing of their descendants suggests that they were all descended from a common male ancestor, as are Good descendants currently living in Switzerland, and that they share the Y-DNA L2b haplogroup subclade, which is rare in Europe [7]. The specific relationships among these Good immigrants are uncertain and there is some disagreement among researchers about their relationships [8] [9].

One plausible European lineage, shown here, is based on two researchers. The ancestry back to Andreas Gutt (born 1532) is based on Jane Best [10]. The ancestry before Andreas Gutt is based on the research of Therese Leuzinger-Kamber of Switzerland. [11]

Research Notes:

Who was the Peter Good in Lancaster Pennsylvania before 1727? Other researchers suggest that he was a brother of John Good and Jacob Good (GB1). [12] [13]

1717 A land warrant, surveyed in 1740, shows land of Chr. Fraeiseus sold to Peter Good sold to Philip Rudysilley, near land of Hans Moyer now Conrad Moyer. [14]

1719 Peter Good value 8 pounds was taxed £0.2.8 in Conestogoe Twp. [15] [16] [17]

1720 Peter Good value £15 was taxed £0.3.9 in Conestogoe Twp. [18] [19] Jacob Good was listed adjacent, assessed at £18. [20]

1721 John Good was assessed as a Palatine in Conestoga Twp, Lancaster County for £20. [21] [22] Also Jacob Goodman. [23]

1722 John Goode was taxed in Conestoga Twp, Lancaster County. [24]

1724 Peter Good and John Good were taxed in Conestoga Twp, Lancaster County. [25]

1733 Jacob Good [perhaps a son of Peter, named in the 1741 deed below] received a warrant for 75 acres on a branch of the Pequea in Lancaster County. The tract was vacated to Henry Hoober in 1740.

Deed dated June 29. The language and date of the deed suggest that Peter had arrived in Pennsylvania about 1717. [26] [27] Was this Peter Good (GD) with first wife Margaret?

This indenture made the twenty ninth day of June in the Year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and fourty one between Peter Good (formerly of the Palatine in German but for these twenty four years last past he hath lived and resided in the Province of Pennsylvania) Taylor and Margaret his wife of the one part and Jacob Good of Lancaster County in the said Province Yeoman (son of the said Peter Good born in Pennsylvania) of the other part witnesseth that the said Peter Good and Margaret his wife for and in consideration of five shillings lawful money to them paid by the said Jacob Good and the natural love and affection which they bear him and for his advancement in the world have given … a certain messuage or tenement plantation and tract of land thereunto belonging situate in the County of Lancaster aforesaid beginning at a white oak by Pequea Creek at a corner of Samuel Boyers land and … land late of Rowland Ellis Junr. …

1748 Jacob and Elizabeth Good sold land to Peter Good, a minor age 13. Peter and Margaret Good had sold the land to Jacob Good on June 29, 1741. [28] [29]

1748 There are three similar entries in the Register of Deed's records that pertain to the disposition of Peter Good's land at his death dated between Nov 13 and Nov 29, 1748. Peter is called a yoeman in Lancaster County. They refer to different tracts of land on the east side of Pequea creek. All three mention his widow Margaret, his oldest son Jacob, his daughter Anna married to Peter Prenneman, daughter Barbara married to Christian Shank, daughter Margaret married to John Stover (Stauffer), and Elizabeth and Mary who are named as daughters of deceased son Peter. All three deeds refer to a verbal statement before Peter's death, about the disposition of his land to his heirs. All of the deeds mention a will, written in German.

In the deed dated Nov 28, John got the 165 acres granted to Peter by Casper and Catherine Wiser on April 27, 1738. [30] [31]

In the deed dated Nov 30, Christian and Barbara got 205 acres, part of a 250 acre tract that had been granted to Peter by James Hamilton of Philadelphia on May 5, 1739. [32]

In the deed dated Nov 29, it appears that John bought land in the Hamilton tract from other heirs. [33]

1765 Several family members were named in a deed. [34]

1812 Several deeds recount names of heirs and tracts of land of Peter Good. [35] [36] [37] [38]

1760 Jacob and Elizabeth Good sold land to Thomas Livesay. Deed dated June 14, 1760. Peter Good had purchased the land from Septimus Robinson in 1738. Peter and Margaret Good sold the land to son Jacob Good on April 16, 1755 for 5 shillings. [39] [40]
