Notes for George Holloway

George Holloway, spouse of Mary Emley, has been reported as a son of John Holloway and Mary Smith, as shown here, and also as a son of George Holloway and Ruth Wood. [1]. We do not know which, if either, is correct.

1761 George Holloway and Mary Emley were married on July 25 in Burlington, New Jersey. [2] [3]

1789 George Holloway purchased land in Mercer County, Kentucky, from Abraham James. Dated May. [4]

1791 John Holloway and Milley Bunch were married in Mercer County, Kentucky. [5]

1793 George Holloway, of Mercer County, Kentucky, did not date his will. The will gave bequests to wife Mary and sons Samuel and James and John Holloway, daughter Mary McGill, daughter Charlotte Goodin, two grand children (unnamed) through son Clayton (deceased).The will was exhibited in court in March, 1793. 1793 The inventory for the estate of George Holloway was recorded in court in May, 1793 [7]

1798 Samuel Holloway and wife Elenor, of the territory northwest of Ohio, sold land to Cornelius Cozine, of Mercer County, Kentucky. Samuel had inherited the land from his father, Goerge Holloway, deceased. The land was on Azariahs Run. Dated in March. [8]

1799 Mary Holloway recorded the account of her guardianship of Samuel and Jas Holloway orphans & legatees of George Holloway Dc'd. Dated March 1799. [9]

1808 The inventory for the estate of James Holloway was recorded by Cely Holloway. Dated April 30. [10]

A biosketch reports [11]:

George Holloway (John, Thomas) - b. about 1737, Burlington Co., NJ; d. by Mar. 1793, Mercer Co., KY. Named in the will of his mother, where he is said to reside in Culpeper Co., VA, and in the will of his grandmother's brother James PHARO. Served in the Revolution as a Private from VA. George purchased 200 acres of land in Culpeper Co., VA on Nov. 16, 1772, and sold it Aug. 13, 1778. George and his family moved to NC in 1778, and to Mercer Co., KY in 1783, where he obtained land on Cedar Creek. When the land of George was sold and found to contain more acreage than originally surveyed, John HOLLOWAY of Clark Co., KY appeared in court Sep. 23, 1822 to swear that he was the son of George, only heir, and would not bring suit against the new owner. George's undated will was proved Mar. 1793 in Mercer Co., KY, naming his wife, all of his children, and "my two grandchildren by my son Clayton Holloway, deceased."

47. John Holloway - b. Jan. 17, 1764, Culpeper Co., VA; d. Sep. 11, 1844, Scott Co., IL; bur. Holloway Cemetery, near Winchester, IL.
48. Clayton Holloway - d. by 1793. Found on Mercer County tax rolls in 1789, and voted in the statehood election of 1792.
Married Feb. 8, 1785, Lincoln Co., KY Nancy WASHBURN. Two children.
49. Mary Holloway - Married first Jun. 28, 1784, Lincoln Co., KY Abraham JAMES, and second Apr. 4, 1792 John McGILL.
50. Charlotte Holloway - Married Nov. 3, 1788, Mercer Co., KY Lewis GOODIN/GOODWIN, son of George GOODIN.
51. James Holloway - d. by Feb. 20, 1808, Mercer Co., KY, when his estate was inventoried.

Married Oct. 28, 1800, Mercer Co., KY Celia McKENNEY, daughter of Lewis McKENNEY, Sr.
Daughter of James Holloway and Celia McKenney:
52. Eleanor married Lancelot 'Lott' QUINN.
