Notes for Henry Coate

We are researching the parents of John Coate, married to Elizabeth Humphries. Henry Coate is potentially the father of John Coate.

1624 Henry Coate was named as a son, in the will of Marmaduke Coate of Currey Rivell. [1] [2]

1631 Henry Coate was named as a son of Marie Coate, widow of Currey Rivell, in her will. [3] [4]

1638 Henry Coate and Richard Wonothye were named as church wardens at Curry Rivel. [5]

1661-1663 The will of Henry Coate, of Currey Rivell, was dated 8 August 1661, with probate, January 1663, Taunton, Somerset, England. Henry Coate wrote his will (H-7) naming children Marmaduke, Henry, John, Rachel and Mary and 15 grandchildren. He died in the village of Hambridge. [6] Parks gave the following transcription [7]:

Henry Coate of Hambridge in the Parish of Curry Rivel within the County of Somerset, Yeoman, by his will gave: To his son Henry "wearing apparel and one pair of boots and 20 pounds". To his son John "four score pounds and one bedstead over the entry and my best feather bed with one pair of sheets, one pair of blankets and cover bed and two bolsters there unto belonging": and several other articles of furniture, etc. Unto his daughter Rachel 10 shillings, Unto his daughter Mary 10 shilling, Unto Jane Counsell his grandchild, 8 pounds, Unto William Sugge, John Perry, Henry Perry, John Jermane, Jonathan Coate, Mary Coate, Elizabeth Coate, Mary Sugge, and Edith Coate, my grand children, twenty shillings apiece. Unto Jane Rowsewell his grandchild one shilling. The rest of his goods and chattels he gave to his son Marmaduke who he made sole Executor of his will. Dated 8th day of August 1661. Will proved January 1663 at Taunton.

A different Henry Coate family was in Drayton, Somerset, England.

1654 Elizabeth Coate, daughter of Henry Coate the elder of Burton, in the parish of Drayton, married John Podger, son of John Podger, of Hambridge, Curry Revell. [12]

1656 There was apparently a double wedding at Drayton Parish on April 28. Henry Coate and Joane Combstork were married at Drayton parish, Somersetshire, England. William Coate, son of Henry Coate, and Dorothy Molford were married at Drayton parish, Somersetshire, England. Perhaps Henry Coate remarried on the same day that his son, Henry, married, or perhaps these are other men named Henry Coate. [13] [14]

1663 Henry Coate was buried on October 2, 1663, at St Catherine Anglican Church in Drayton, Somerset, England. [15]

1664 Eadith Coats and John Wiseman were married on May 24, at Drayton. [16]

1666 Mary Coate and John Prigg were married on August 27, at Drayton. [17]

1663-68 Notes of the sale of the goods of Henry Coat, debtor, of 'Barton' [Burton?] appear in the Drayton Overseers' Disbursements [18]:

1663: 'Alsoe theare yet remaineth in the hands of John Witherall part of the goods of him the said Henry (that is to say) one Table bord, and Frame, one Frome, three bad Barrells, one peare of Billows, one dowlinge swage, one peele, Three sleges, one peare of parbuckles, one shay halter, one Nailinge toole, one hammer, one Amrie, one Coffer his wearinge apparell one peeletowe one Apron one hatt.'

1664 and 1665: 'Remayneth of the goods of Henry Coate unsolde. namely one payre of Billowes, a dowling swage, and a sledge, a aile toole and a shooinge halter, the glass of the windoes, being 6 pane, one Amery, one coffer, two boxes and one Bedstead, with a little old trash iron and his wives hatt and a Turne'.

1666, 1667 and 1668: 'Remayneth of the goods of Henry Coate unsold, one paire of Billowes, a shooinge halter, the glasse of the windoes being 6 pane, one Amerie, two boxes and one bedstead'.

1670 Henery Coate and Elizabeth Smyth were married on June 19, at Drayton. [19]

1666 Mary Coate and John Prigg were married on August 27, at Drayton parish, Somersetshire, England. [20]

1670 Henry Coate and Elizabeth Herron were married on June 19, at Drayton parish, Somersetshire, England. [21]

1670 Henery Coate Jr and Elizabeth Herron were married on January or June 19, 1670 at Drayton, Somerset, England. [22] [23]

1671 Henery Coate was buried on December 6, 1671, at St Catherine Anglican Church in Drayton, Somerset, England. [24]

1675 Mary Coate, of Barton, and John Edwards were married on August 3. [25]

1677 Henry Coate was buried on April 13, 1677, at St Catherine Anglican Church in Drayton, Somerset, England. [26]

Another potential marriage has been suggested for Henry Coate:

1614 Emily Jane Buckingham, reportedly born on September 13, 1589 in Buckinghamshire, England, and married in 1614. We have not found documentation for this marriage.

1625 "Sr George Speake, Kt., and James Rosse, Esqr., to hear and determine all differences between Ellianor Coate and Henry Coate 'to whose Arbitrim't both the sayd pties have submitted themselves.' " [28]

1654 Elizabeth Coate, daughter of Henry Coate, the Elder of Burton, and John Podger, son of John Podger, of Hambridge, Curry Revell, were married on October 19, at Drayton parish, Somersetshire, England. [29]
