We have assumed that Marmaduke, son of William Coate and Rebecca Sharp, is the same as Marmaduke, married to Sarah Matthis. We seek evidence to support or refute this assumption. [1]

1749 Marmaduke Coate of Mansfield, Burlington County, house carpenter, dated his will on May 7. Wife, Sarah, tract in the mountains at Kingwood, Bethlehem Township, to enable her to bring up child John and expected child. Plantation in Mansfield I bought of John Gibbs. Executors wife, and brother John Coats. Witnesses John Buflin, Ann Buffin, Joseph Pope. Proved May 31, 1749. [9]

1750 Intestate Administration granted to Rebecca Coates, widow for the estate of Marmaduke Coates, of Burlington County, perhaps this one. Robert Hartshorne, atty,-at-law, fellow bondsman. Dated January 5. [10]

1750 Inventory of personal estate, £269.8.6; made by Thos. Earl and Michael Newbold. Dated May 7. [11]

1750-51 "While travelling in Burlington after his first wife's death, John [Leeds] met and married Sarah Mathis Coate, 1751, daughter ol John and Alice Mathis and widow of Marmaduke Coate, a noted Friend of Mansfield, N. J." [12] [13]
