Jack Schafer served as a member of the famous Purdue University small grain improvement group and as Chairman of Plant Pathology at Kansas State University prior to returning to Pullman, his original home town. Schafer was President of APS [American Phytopathological Society] in 1979. Schafer brought a moderating, diplomatic leadership to the department at a critical time.

Dr. John F. Schafer has recently retired from his position as Director of the U.S.D.A. Cereal Rust Laboratory at the University of Minnesota. Prior to joining the CRL, he served as President of the American Phytopathological Society and as Head of Plant Pathology at Kansas State and Washington State Universities.

2007 John Francis Schafer died on May 5 in Santa Rosa, Sonoma, California. [1] He was buried at Oakwood Cemetery, Pepin County, Wisconsin. [2]
