1909 Anna R. Ertel, wife of Chas. F. Schafer, died on April 15 in Jewell, Kansas. She was buried in Jewell City Cemetery, Jewell, Jewell County, Kansas. [2] An obituary states, [3]

Our town was saddened yesterday morning by news of the death of Mrs. Chas. F. Schafer, who passed away at 4 a. m. Only a few months ago life held every promise for her. She had youth and health and home, with husband and children about her and loving friends on every hand. She was suddenly stricken in a way that baffled the doctors, and after exhausting their resources they advised a surgical operation for appendicitis. She was taken to Kansas City and the operation was performed, but the surgeons knew she could not live. In addition to appendicitis they found cancer. She told her husband that she went onto the operating table singing in her heart, "Nearer My God to Thee," and so it proved. The surgeons thought it best not to tell her the truth as there have been cases where the operation seems to have a favorable effect and the patient got well; so it has been a load for Mr. Schafer all these weeks, to present a cheerful face to her and to carry his burden a secret from her. Mres. Schafer grew from girlhood in Jewell and was generally beloved.

"Some time at eve when the tide is low,
I shall slip my moorings and sail away
To Mystic Isles, where at anchor lay
The crafts of those who have sailed before,
O'er the unknown sea to the unseen shore.

A few who have watched me sail away,
Loving souls that my heart held dear,
In silent sorrow drop a tear.
But I shal have peacefully furled my sail,
In meetings sheltered from storm and gale,
And greeted the friends who sailed before,
O'er the unknown sea to the unknown shore"
