A biosketch reports [3]:

Isaac Meals, clerk of the board of county commissioners, was born in Washington township, Butler county, November P.), 1843, son of Joseph G and Hannah (Hilliard) Meals. He was reared on the homestead farm, was educated in the common schools and at West Sunbury Academy, and graduated at Iron City College, Pittsburg, in 1867. The autumn after graduating he commenced teaching in his native township, which he followed during the winter seasons for five years, working on the farm in summer. he followed agricultural pursuits until February, 1891, when he was elected to his present position, which he has since filled in a highly satisfactory manner. Prior to his removal to Butler, he filled the office of county auditor, from 1871 to 1873. Mr. Meals was married December 22, 1870, to Clara Gilmore, a step-daughter of Judge James Kerr, who is the mother of three children, as follows: Horace G.; Bernice, and Erla. The family are connected with the Methodist Episcopal church, and in politics. Mr. Meals is a consistent Republican.
