Notes for Armand Chevalley

1911 Armand Chevalley arrived in New York from Le Havre aboard the ship La Savoie on 25 November. He was 17 years old, 5'7" tall, had clear complexion, chestnut hair and auburn eyes, was born in Yverdon, Switzerland, and had not been in the U.S. before. His overseas emmigration certificate listed his birth year 1894, profession or skill merchant (kaufmann), his heimat-gemeinde (homeland or native community) Chevenez, Bern, and his wohn-gemeinde (residential community) Pomy, Vaud. As in the ship manifest he was leaving Havre on the steamship La Savoie for New York in November 1911. The passage price was Fr. 312.52. [1] Alfred Chevalley (age 30), of Los Angeles, was also on the ship, perhaps named as the brother of Armand [2].

1916 Edward Armand Chevalley was born on October 15 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. His parents were listed as "Arnold" Chevalley and Bessie Patrick. [3]

1917 Renee Chevalley was born on December 10 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois. Her birth was registered on April 8, 1981, with here parents listed as Armand Chevalley, born in Yverdon, Switzerland, and Bessie Patrick Urban, born in Austria. [4]

1920 On January 15, Armand Chevalley (age 25, born in Switzerland, both parents born in Switzerland) and his wife Bessie (age 25, born in Austria, both parents born in Austria, language Hungarian) lived at 7239 Stony Island Avenue, Chicago (District 454), Cook, Illinois. Armand's immigration year was 1911, and he was a cook in the hotel industry and owned a house with mortgage. Bessie's immigration year was 1908. Their children were son Edward (age 3 2/12), and daughter Renee (age 2 1/12), both born in Illinois. [5]

1923 Armand Chevalley, born 1894 in Switzerland, was naturalized in Chicago on February 24. He resided at 7239 Stony Island Ave, Chicago. [6]

1930 Armand Chevalley and Ovia Hudson were married on November 20 in Cook County, Illinois. [7]

1930 On April 9, Bessie "Cahezally" or "Sahezally" (age 34) and her daughter Renee (age 12) were living on N. California Street in Chicago, Illinois. Bessie and her parents were born in Austria and the language spoken in her home before coming to America was Bohemian. She is listed as a widow. Renee was born in Illinois, her father in Switzerland and her mother in Austria. Bessie's occupation was a waitress in a restaurant. [8]

1930 On April 23, Armand Chevalley (age 36, born in Switzerland, both parents born in Switzerland) and Ovie Chevalley (age 23, born in Kentucky, both parents born in Kentucky) lived on Kenmore Avenue, Chicago (District 2888), Cook, Illinois. Armand's age at first marriage was 21, his immigration year was 1912, and he was a chef-steward in the restaurant industry. His house was valued at $7000. Ovie age at first marriage was 22. Daughter Renee (age 12, born in Illinois, father born in Switzerland and mother born in Austria) is listed with them, but marked "ab." [9] Armand's son Edward was living with the family of his uncle Paul Chevalley in Alton.

1931 Maurice Hearne and Bessie Chevalley were married on August 11 in Lake County, Indiana. [10]

1940 On April 2, Armand Chevalley (age 46, born Switzerland) and Ovia Chevalley (age 32, born in Kentucky) lived in Chicago, Illinois with Edward (age 23). [11]

1940 Bessie Chevalley (age 44), divorced, lived at 7239 Stony Island Ave, Chicago, Chicago City, Cook County, Illinois with daughter Renee (age 22). [12][13]

1964 Armand Chevalley, born 15 January 1894, died on 4 May 1964 at age 70, in Allen County, Kentucky. [14] [15] He was buried at Mount Union General Baptist Church Cemetery, Allen County, Kentucky. [16]

Funeral services were held yesterday for Mrs. Barbara Skanberg, 614 East 101st street, Chicago, who died Monday in Jackson Park hospital, Chicago.
The Rev. Walter B. Ohman of Faith Lutheran church, Homewood, officiated in Tews funeral home. Burial was in Concordia cemetery, Hammond, Ind.
Mrs. Skanberg was born December 4, 1895, in Austria.
She is survived by her husband, Karl Einar; a daughter, Mrs. Renee Steitz of Homewood; a son Edward Chevalley of Dayton, Ohio, and three grandchildren.

1991 Ovia Chevalley, born 26 February 1908, died on 6 February1991 at age 83. [18] [19] She was buried at Mount Union General Baptist Church Cemetery, Allen County, Kentucky. [20] "Ovia Chevalley, 82, of Scottsville, died at 3:12 a.m. Wednesday at Allen County War Memorial Hospital … She was the wife of the late Armand Chevalley and the daugter of the late James William and Laura Belle Bonner Hudson. …" [21]
