1256 On May 1, the king granted [1]

Protection, with clause for one year from Whitsunday, for the following, who have gone in the service of Edward, the king's son, to Ireland:
Alan la Zuche.
Nicholas de Vaus. ...
William la Zuche. ...

1272 Nicholas Vaux was appointed attorney for Ellen la Zouche. [2] [Moriarty [3] dates this entry as 17 November 1273, but the Calendar dates it as 1272.]

Memorandum, that the king granted to Ellen la Zuch, who is going. to Scotland by the king's licence, that Nicholas de Vallibus, John de Oxenden, and William de Flore, whom she has appointed before the king in her place shall be admitted as her attorneys, until Michaelmas next.

1275 Nicholas Vaux died before Easter on which day an agreement for the marriage of his son Robert to Alice de Sancto Licio, niece of Elias de Bekingham, was made. [4]

It is agreed between Ellen la Zouche and Elias de Bekingham that Ellen should grant to Elias all the right she had or could have in the ward of the land of Yelvertoft by reason of Robert de Vallibus, son of Sir Nicholas de Vallibus, knt., and also in the marriage of the said Robert to the use of (ad opus) Alice, daughter of Adam de Sancto Licio, niece of the said Elias, To have and to hold to the said Elias the said ward of Yelvertoft and the marriage of the said Robert until the lawful age of Robert. Provided that Elias, when Robert has come to lawful age, shall answer to Ellen and to Robert for the issues of the said land of Yelvertoft. And the said Elias shall give to the use of the said Robert and Alice £40 sterling to be paid to Ellen or her assignee, viz., at Easter next £10, at Easter following £10, etc., in the Church of the Apostles James and John of Brakele, to wit that the money, by the advice of Ellen and Elias, should be put to the use of Robert and Alice as may appear best. And if the said Alice die within the minority of Robert, the ward and marriage of Robert shall revert to Ellen as before. And when Robert comes of age Elias shall deliver to him the said land of Yelvertoft in the same condition as, or better than, he received them from Ellen. Distraint to be made on the goods of Elias if he fails to pay the money.

Sir Nicholas de Vaux of Yelvertoft, co. Northants, appears in 1256; a tenant of the la Zouche family; probably a kinsman of John de Vaux of Norfolk; Constable of Chester about 1250; died before Easter 3 Edward I. (1275).
