Peverel de Nottingeham, William II
Son of William I Peverel, d. 1113/14 and Adeline. He was twice married, to Oddona and to Avice, daughter of William of Lancaster. Founder c. 1145 of the Augustinian priory of St. James at Northampton (Knowles and Haddock, p. 168). His sons William and Henry predeceased him, leaving no issue. His daughter Margaret was wife of Robert II earl of Ferrers. One of the principal supporters of King Stephen at the battle of the Standard in 1138, he was taken prisoner at the battle of Lincoln in 1141. He lost his lands at that time, the Empress granting them to William Paynel. He recovered them by 1143, but they were regranted to Ranulf of Chester in1153 by Henry duke of Normandy. In the following year he was accused of the death by poisoning of Earl Ranulf, and fled to a monastery, of which he became a monk, on the approach of Henry II (Gerv. Canterbury i, 161). His son Henry, by Oddona, predeceased him. His eventual heiress was his daughter Margaret, wife of Robert II earl Ferrers.
