Notes for Thomas Hendley

The Diary of Thomas Hendley reports [1]:

1529 "The book of Thomas Hendle of Otham in the county of Kent, Gentleman, son of Gervase Hendle, the elder of Cranebroke in the said county. Gentleman which Thomas was born the 27th day of June at one o'clock in the morning, being Wednesday, in the year of Our Lord, one thousand, five hundred and three and was married at Otham … to Eliza Ellys, widow, late wife of Thomas Ellys of Kenyngton, Kent, on the fourth day of November, being Thursday Anno Dom 1529."

1530 "Mercye Hendle daughter of the before named Thomas and Eliza, was born, on the day of St Michael Archangel, about 8.00 oclock in the morning, Anno Dom c 1530, and her Godfather was the above named Gervase Hendle, father of the above Thomas, and her Godmothers were Elizabeth Nastale, wife of John Nastale, Gent, Mercea Couitoppe, wife of Richard Couitoppe of Cranebok, & Johanna Lamb wife of Robert Lamb of Ledys, Gentleman at confirmation and she was married to Edmond Fowler only son and heir of Thomas Fowler Esquire 24th october in the 6th year of the reign of King Edward 6th at London at Saint Sepulchre's Church 1553."

1532 "Walter Hendle. Son of the above named Thomas & Eliza was born on St Oswald's Day between one & two in the morning Anno Dom 1532, being Hop Monday the 15th day of April, and his Godfathers were Robert Lamb, of Ledys Gentleman, and John Cromp of Otham, and his Godmother Rabeye Taylor, wife of Walter Tayler, of Ledys, and his Godfather, Walter Tayler, of Ledys, and his Godfather, Walter Hendle of Cranebrok Esquire at confirmation and he was married to Frances Hales, younger daughter of James Hales Knight, and Justice of the Common Bench, at Westminster, 23rd day of January, being Monday in the 6th year King Edward 6th (1553) aged 21 on the first day of Hilary Term, in London, in the Paris of St Lawrence."

1534 "Amia Hendle. Daughter of the before names Thomas and Eliza was born on the first day of June A.D. 1534 being the Monday after the Feast of the Holy Trinity and her Godfather was John Lamb of Ledys Gentleman, and her godmothers were Anna Gay, wife of Osmond Gay, Gentleman, & Mildred Franklen, wife of John Franklen, Gentleman and she died before confirmation."

1537 "Peter Hendle son of the before named Thomas & Eliza was born on St Peters the Apostle day between 8 and 9 o'clock in the morning being Friday, A.D. 1537 and his Godfather's were Arthur Lovekyn, of Ottham, Gentleman, and Lodowic Apkees, Parson of Ottham, and his Godmother, Margery Hendle, wife of Walter Hendle, of Cranbroke, Esquire and brother of the above Thomas, and his Godfather at confirmation was Anthony St Leger, of Wolcombe, esquire."

1553 "Memoir. That the 14th day of October in the 6th year of King Edward 6th (1553) Mercye Hendle, my daughter was married to Edmond Fowler son and only heir of Thoas Fowler of Islyngton in the county of Middlesex Esquire, and the hath for her jointure 40 pound by the year of annuity out of his manor of Garnesobey. I gave her to this marriage 200 pound and must lend him at the marriage of Walter Hendle my son and heir 104 pound for seven years."

1554 "Memoir. That the 23rd day of January, in the 6th year of King Edward the 6th (1553/4), Walter Hendle my son was married at London in St Lawrences Church, being the first day of Hilery term to Frances Hales, youngest daughter of Sir James Hales Knight and one of the Justices of Comon Pleas at Westminster A.D. 1553 and the said Sir James did give with his daughter to her and to Walter Hendle and the longest liver of them both, the Manor of Dane Court in Bowiston under the Blean. At sometime Sir John Fogg's Kent and 10 pound by year of annuity out of his lands during her life, and 100 marks of money. And I give to the said Walter and Frances all my lands in Tenterden and Berstedd at Melyott and to the heirs of the said Walter yearly 20 pound, and more clear and 10 pound in money. 20 pound a year and10 pound in pennies."

1557 "Memoir. That the Eliza Hendle my good wife died this morning after the conception of Our Lady, being Thursday at 3.00 o'clock at afternoon A.D. 1557.

1559-1565 "Memoir. That I was remarried to Joan Pawley late wife of Thomas Pawley, late of Long Stoke … and daughter of John Tebold, late of Seale, gentleman, 28th day of November, A.D. 1559 in St Michael's Church Crooked Lane London, 1559. And she died the 7th day of April 1565, and was buried 1565 Ottham. On whose soul may God have mercy."

1565 "Apl 14 Hendle Jone wife of Thos" was buried in Otham, Kent. [2]

1569-1584 "And the above named Thomas Hendle was married at Mewseham to Lady Katherine Moyle, late wife of Thomas Moyle, Kent, 16th day of October 1569. And the above named Katherine died at Ottham 26th day of May 1584 and was buried 1584 at Eastwell."

1590/91 "Mar. 9. Mr Hendley Esq" was buried in Otham, Kent. [3]

[1] Personal Communication, transcription by Judy Brodie of the diary of Thomas Hendle. "Thomas Hendle kept a diary from 1529 to 1584/84 which is kept in the county hall at Maidstone Kent. This is a beautiful leather bound book which was given to him by a friend as a gift. Some of the diary in 1800 had been transcribed from Latin to English and this is what I copied on the 18th May 2001.".
