Research Notes:

An obituary for daughter Rachel Wise suggests that George was related to Governor Wise of Virginia. I seek documentation and clarification about this family.

An obituary for daughter Rachel Wise, wife of Peter Ritner reported [47]:

Her [Rachel's ] father was a near relative of Governor Wise, of Virginia, and her mother a cousin of the Hon. Thomas A. Hendricks, ex-vice president of the United States.

Governor "Wise was born in Drummondtown, Accomack County, Virginia, to Major John Wise and his second wife Sarah Corbin Cropper, whose families had long been settled there. Wise was of English and Scottish descent." [48]

We have gathered notes for several men named George Weise who lived in Cumberland County during this era. We are not certain about some of their parents, and their records might be confused here.

We have matched the following:

We show George Wise (1776-1857) of North Middleton as a son of Jacob (1745-1830) and Anna Marie Wise of South Middleton, because of the bequest that Jacob Wise of South Middleton made, in his 1824 will, to George Wise of North Middleton.

Deeds dated 1825 and 1839 suggest that George Wise with wife Mary, of West Pennsboro and Mifflin, Cumberland County was related to, perhaps a son of, Felix Wise (1752-1826). Felix had sold the land in the deeds to George Wise and named a (living) son George in his 1826 will.

We have notes for other men named George Wise living in Cumberland County during this era who might be related to this Wise family, but whose parents we have not identified. There are also men named George Wise in our tree for whom we have no notes. We suspect that some of these are matches, but we do not have sufficient information to know or guess which is matched to which.

Notes for men named George Wise, whose parents we have not identified:

George Wise, of Carlisle [49], who died in 1815 in Carlisle, spouse of Rebecca. Note that George Wise of Carlisle named George Wise of South Middleton as an executor of his will. We suspect that this was George Wise, son of Jacob and Sophia an that nephew George, son of brother Jacob, was the executor.

George Wise [50], who died in 1809 in Mifflin Twp, naming 5 children in his will. Felix Wise was named as one of the executors.

George Wise (about 1795-1863) [51], who died in South Middleton, spouse of Hannah Hippenheimer.

Places in our tree for men named George Wise, for whom we have no notes:

George Wise, son of Jacob (1708-1798) and Sophia Wise [52].

George Michael Wise (1726-1777+), who might have had a son named George. [53] We have not seen the will of George Michael Wise.

Jacob Wise (1750-1817), who might have had a son named George. [54] Jacob Wise did not name his children in his 1817 will.
