Notes for Alan

Alan was called Alan Rufus or Alan the Red and Count Alan of Bretagne (Brittany).

1066 Alan Rufus, second son of Eudes, fought with William the Conqueror at the battle of Hastings.

William the Conqueror granted Alan the forfeited manors of Edwin Earl of Mercia in Yorkshire.

Alan was created Earl of Richmond by William the Conqueror and built Richmond Castle.

1089 Alan, Count of Bretagne and Earl of Richmond died without issue and was buried in the abbey church of Bury St. Edmunds.

Alan was succeeded as Earl of Richmond by his brother Alan the Black who died in 1093 without issue and was succeeded by the next brother Stephen, Count of Penthièvre. Stephen died about 1136 and was succeeded by his son Alan the Black. This Alan confirmed the grant of Acaris son of Bardolf of land in Fors, Worton, and Brough to the monks of Savigny [1] [2]
