Notes for Henry Delahay Symonds

1783 Henry Delahay Symonds, of the parish of St Martin Ludgate, London, and Jane Glover, of the parish of St Michael Cornhill, London, Spinster, were married by license at the church of St Michael Cornhill on the fifthe day of October. The witnesses were John White, Thos. Holland, Phane(?) Camfield, and Ann Bateford. [1]

1783 Henry Delahay Symonds became a freeman of the Company of Stationers on December 2, by redemption. [2]

1784 Jane, the daughter of Henry Delahay and Jane Symonds, was born in August and baptized on September 5 at St Martin Ludgate, London. [3]

1787 Henry Delahay Symonds and Richard Delahay Symonds, sons of Henry and Jane Symonds, were born on August 22 and baptized on September 9 at St Faith Under St Paul, London. [4]

1792 Ann Symonds, daughter of Henry Delahay and Jane Symonds, was born on February 26 and baptized on March 25 at St Faith Under St Paul, London. [5]

1793 Henry de La Haye Symonds was the defendant in the trial of Henry de La Haye Symonds, Royal Offences, seditious libel, 20th February 1793 [Proceedings of the Old Bailey, 1674-1913]

Henry de La Haye Symonds was indicted for publishing, and causing to be published on the 6th of August, a certain scandalous and seditious libel in a book, entitled the Rights of Man, part second; by Thomas Paine .
(The indictment was opened by Mr. Fielding.
(And the Case by Mr. Attorney General.)
The prisoner, by his Counsel, Mr. Raine, acknowledged himself Guilty .
After which Mr. Raine addressed the Court in mitigation of his offence.
Guilty.
Tried by the London Jury before Mr. Justice Grose.
Fined 20 l. Imprisoned for two years, and afterwards to find security for his good behaviour for three years, himself in 200 l. and two sureties in 100 l. each.

1793 Li_erty (Liberty?) Henry, son of Henry Delahay and Jane Symonds, was born on September 11 and baptized on October 5 at St Faith Under St Paul, London. [6]

1806 Henry Delahay Symonds was the victim named in the trial of John Moore, Deception fraud, 2nd July 1806 [Proceedings of the Old Bailey, 1674-1913]

John Moore was indicted for that he on the 26th of May, unlawfully knowingly, and designedly, did, under a false pretence, obtain three books, value 3 l. 4 s. the property of Henry Delahay Symonds.
William Sherwood sworn. I am clerk to Mr. Symonds, Pater-noster Row. On the 26th of May the prisoner at the bar brought a note-addressed to H. D. Symonds, I wrote a note to Mr. Dutton to-let him know the price of-it, and that he must send the money because I thought it was a a fraud; Mr. Symonds came down at the time, I told him I had wrote a note that he could not have them without the money; he made a pause and said, perhaps Mr. Dutton wanted them, I said I believed it was not Mr. Dutton's hand writing, and the man said he came from Mr. Dutton, he was in a hurry; I asked him his name, he said John Moore, I delivered them to him.
Q. It is very odd how you came to send them when you suspected the man. - A.Because Mr. Symonds came down stairs.

Henry Delahay Symonds sworn. The man sent a note up stairs, I sent word down I would leave it to him to do as he pleased; he not knowing the man wrote a note, I happened to go down stairs, and ordered him to let the books go, as Mr. Dutton might want the books in a hurry.
Q. You thought he was sent by Mr. Dutton. - A. Yes.
Thomas Dutton sworn. Q. Look at that paper. - A. I am a bookseller in Gracechurch-street; that is not my hand writing.
- sworn. I am shopman to a pawnbroker. On the 26th of May the prisoner brought these three volumes for me to purchase, I gave him a guinea and a half for them; I am sure he is the same man.
Prisoner's Defence. When I first came to this bar I pleaded guilty, for this reason, I would not wish to trouble your your lordship, nor offend my prosecutor with a tedious defence.
Guilty, aged 45.
[The jury recommended the prisoner to mercy.]

1815 Henry Delahay Symonds wrote his will on December 18. [7]He bequeathed 500 pounds to his daughter Jane Neely, wife of Samuel Dunbar Neely, for her own use. The residue of his estate he bequeathed to his daughter Ann Symonds. He appointed his daughter Ann Symonds and John Woodward of Pleasant Row Islington in the County of Middlesex Gent. his executrix and executor.

This is the last Will & Testament of me Henry Delahay Symonds of Asteys Row Islingon in the County of Middlesex Gent being of sound & disposing mind memory & understanding in manner & form following that is to say First that all my just debts & Funeral Expences & the charges of proving this my will & obtaining probate thereof be in the first place fully paid discharged satisfied & after payment & satisfaction thereof I give & bequeath unto my daughter Jane Neely wife of Samuel Dunbar Neely of Paternoster Row in the City of London Book Seller the Sum of Five hundred pounds of lawful money of Great Britain to & for her own sole & separate use & benefit and I direct that the same or any part thereof shall not be subject or liable to the power controul debts or Engagements of her present or any future husband or husbands with whom she may happen to marry but that her receipt alone not withstanding such coverture shall be a good & sufficient discharge & discharges for the same and every part thereof to my Ex'ors hereinafter named but if my said dau'r Jane Neely shall happen to die during my life then & in that case I give & bequeath the said Sum of Five hundred pounds & every part thereof unto & amongst all & every the children of my said dau'r Jane Neely that shall be living at the time of my decease equally to be divided between them share & share alike but if there should be but one such child then I give & bequeath the whole of the said Sum of Five hundred pounds unto such Child to & for his or her own use & benefit And as to for concerning All the rest residue & remainder of my Estate & Effects whatsoever & wheresoever & of what nature kind or quality soever the same may consist of or be whether real or personal that I shall or may be in possession reversion remainder or expectancy at the time of my decease I give devise & bequeath the same & every part thereof unto my daughter Ann Symonds her heirs Ex'ors adm'ors & assigns to hold the same & every part thereof unto & to the only proper use & behoof of my said daur. Ann Symonds her heirs Ex'ors Adm'ors & assignes for ever & according to my right title Estate & Interest therein And I do hereby direct that no part or parts or any part of the said residue of my Estate & Effects shall be subject or liable to the power controul debts or Engagements of any husband or husbands with whom my said dau'r shall happen to marry but that her receipt & receipts alone notwithstanding such coverture shall be a a good & sufficient discharge & good and sufficient discharges to all & every porcon or procons making any payment or payments or in any other manner relating to the same, And I do hereby direct & declare that it shall & may be lawfull to & for my said daur Ann Symonds & she is hereby authorized & empowered notwithstanding Coverture at any time or times hereafter in & by her last will & Testament or codicil thereto or testamentary disposition or codicil thereto execute & attested in such manner as is by Law required to give devise & bequeath & dispose of all and every or any part or parts of the said residue of my said Estate & Effects herein before given to her both real & personal to any person or persons to such uses upon such trusts under & subject to such powers provisees declarations & agreements & in such manner & term as she may in her discretion think proper And I do hereby nominate constitute & appoint my said daughter Ann Symonds & John Woodward of Pleasant Row Islington in the County of Middx Gent Executrix & Executor of this my last will & Testament & do hereby revoke & make void all other will & wills by me at any time or times heretofore made & declare this only to be & contain my last will & Testament In witness whereof I the said Henry Delahay Symonds the Testator have hereunto set my hand & Seal this Eighteenth day of December in the Year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred & fifteen. Proved at London 14th. Augt. 1816 before the Whpful Saml. Pearce Parson D. of Laws & Surr by the oath of Ann Bacon formerly Symonds wife of William Bacon the dau'r & John Woodward the Ex'ors to whom Adm. was granted being sworn duly to Adm.

1816 William Bacon, of the parish of St George Hanover Square, and Ann Symonds, of the parish of St Mary Islington, were married in the church of St George Hanover Square on January 27, by license. The witnesses were W Bacon and H D Symonds. [8]

1816 Henry Delahay Symonds of St Mary Islington was buried on May 4 in Beddington, St Mary, Surrey. His age was 76 years. [9] [10]

1816 The will of Henry Delahay Symonds was proved on August 14, with administration granted to the executors Ann Bacon, formerly Symonds, wife of William Bacon, and John Woodward. [11]
