Notes for Christian Rivir

1840 Christian Rivel [perhaps Rivir] lived in North Woodbury, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in a household with Males: 1 (age 20 thru 29); Females: 1 (age Under 5), and 1 (age 20 thru 29). Jacob Cowing [sic, perhaps Cowan] was listed adjacent and on the same page as Conrad Nicodemus. [1]

1842 Christian Rivir was a witness to the will of Christian Hoover with wife Lorrna and minor daughter Caroline in North Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. This was likely Christian Hoover, who lived next to John Rivor in the 1840 census with a young daughter. Executors were Nicholas Gruber and Jacob Cowen (possibly an in-law of brother John). [2]

1843 Christ River and John River[l] wer taxed as laborers in Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [3]

1844 John and Christ River[l] were taxed in North Woodbury Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. [4]

1845 Christian River was taxed, in Green Twp, Mahoning County, Ohio, for 1 cow.

1850 Christena Riber (age 35, born in Pennsylvania), plasterer, lived in Greene, Mahoning County, Ohio with Mary Riber (age 30), Susanna Riber (age 11), Hanna Riber (age 9), and Samuel Riber (age 6). [5]

1860 Christian River (age 50) lived in Green, Noble County, Indiana, at post office Wolflake, with Mary River (age 46), and Samuel D River (age 16). All were born in Pennsylvania. Christian's estate was valued at $800+$350. Married daughters Susanna Messmore and Hanna Eyman were in the adjacent households. [6] [7]

186x Land of C River was in section 7 of Green Twp, just north of the unnamed lake that is named "Rivir" Lake on subsequent maps. C River also owned 80 acres in section 24 of Noble Twp. Perhaps this land belonged to Christian or to nephew CS Rivir. [8]

1870 Christiana River (age 55, born in Pennsylvania) lived in Green, Noble County, Indiana, at post office Green Center, with Mary River (age 51), and Louisa Iman (age 8). (grand-daughter Louisa was also listed living with Christian's daughter Hannah and Hannah's second husband Sipes) lived next door to Christian's son Samuel Rivir (age 26)) [9] [10]

1874 Mary Rivir died and was buried at Sanford Cemetery. [11]

1874 The home of C Rivir was on Lake Rivir in Green Township, Noble County [12]. There was a M.E. Church near or on his land.

1875 Christian Rivir, born about 1814 married widowed Mrs Delila J Davis (born as McClure) on August 23, in Noble County, Indiana. [13]

1880 Christian Rivir (age 66) lived in Noble County, Indiana with wife Delila Rivir (age 54) and wife's daughter Emma Davis. Christian was a retired farmer. [14]

1882 "The second schoolhouse in the northwest corner (of Green Twp), while it was used for educational purposes, was frequently occupied by a small society of Methodists that assembled there to worship … Among the membership of this society were … Christian River … " [15] [16]

1900 Jane Rivir (age 74, birthdate Apr 1826, born in Ohio), widowed, mother in law, lived in Noble, Noble County, Indiana with Harvey G Young (age 44), Emma R Young (age 44), Marshall W Young (age 15), Arlowe Young (age 10), Rheuben Longley (age 28), and John Longley (age 23). She had had 1 children, 1 of them still living. [17]

1902 Jane Rivir (Christian's second wife) died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Harvey J. Young, in Noble Twp, Tuesday. Funeral at Merriam this forenoon. [18] [19] The grave memorial of her first husband, James A. Davis, in Christian Chapel Cemetery, Merriam, Noble County, Indiana, also lists her. [20]

Research Notes:

1817 Michael, Joel, and widow Grabill were listed in Woodberry Twp, Bedford County, Pennsylvania (tax list?). [21]

The bible of Christian S Rivir has the following notes about Christian: "Christian Rivir was a native of Pa. but emigrated to Noble County, Ind many years since. Some years ago his wife died. He married again and died at the residence of his wife's daughter, May 18, '83, aged some 69 years. He leaves a wife, also three children by a former wife; they are not in this part of the country." A note alongside the obit says "brother of John Rivir-father of C S Rivir" our grandfather.

1874 Mary Graybill Rivir, wife of Christian Rivir, died and was buried at Sanford Cemetery. [22]
