Notes for George Hewlett

1634 George Hewlett, ancestor of the Long Island family, was born in 1634, and died at Hempstead in 1722. He was the son of Lewis Hewlett (Louis Hulet) of Buckinghamshire, Enlgand, who was in the Massachusetts colony in 1636. He went to New Amsterdam where, in 1648, he married for a second or third wife Caroline Marwin.

1657 George Hewlett was paid by the town of Hempstead for "burning the neck" and for "mending the towne fense and gattes" [1]

1657 After an account of calves given in to be kept was a note, "George hewlett kept the Calves twenty five weeckes to have 16 shillings the weeke." The agreement to keep the calves was recorded as follows: [2]

Know all men by these present whomsoever it shall conserne that I georg hewlette doe Covenant and Agree to keep A heard of Calvs for this towne of hempsted this present yeare Carefully and faithfully with all diligens to the beast of my power and to watter them Carefully twise A daye ore onese at Least and to gooe out with the Calvs halfe Ane ower by sonne in the Morneing and not to bring them in before sunnesett at night and to gooe downe to the sowthe onse in three weeckes if time and wether purmit alwise provided that there shall at the first goeing downe bee two found by them that ownes the Calvs and at other times one to gooe downe and in Case Any Calvs shall be lost through the said gorges carlesnes the said george shall make them good. The number of the Calvs shall bee seventy that shall be kept by the said gorge; the said gorge is to begin to keep the fortenth of this month ; the townesmen to find A boy to gooe with the keeper. As Longe as wee the townesmen shall see Convenient; and the said george is to have for his wages sixtene shillings A weaike to bee paid as foloweth one pound of butter A Calfe at sixe pennes the pound to bee paid by the Last may next Insewing, and and twelfe pennse the head in good sised wampom to bee payed with the butter out of his wages the reast to bee payd in Corne halfe wheat and halfe Inden wheat at five shillings the boshell and Inden Corne at three shillings the boshell to bee payd by the Last of Jenewary next Insewing the datte hereof, and if wee the townesmen shall see cause at the Latter ende of the year to have them kept at sowth then wee to find A mane to keep with the keeper the keeper is to keep the Calves in the hilles and for the Saboth dayes the keeper is to take his turne when it comes as often as others and for the just and full performanse hereof wee have subscribed ower handes this second of May.

1657-1658 George Hewlett was listed in an accounting of gates, cattle, and land in Hempstead, Long Island. [3]

1683 On 11 October, George Hewlett was named on a rates list for Hempstead with 1 heads, 28 [acres or morgens?] land and meadows, 7 oxen, 7 cows, 20 hogs, 0 sheep, and 1 horse. [4] [5]

Research Notes:

George Hewlett had two brothers and one sister. John, infirm, lived with him at Merrick, while Lewis owned land and resided at Great Neck. The sister, Jane married Adam Mott, of Essex County, England, at the Old Dutch Church in New Amsterdam. In 1655 they lived in Hempstead, owning land adjoining George Hewlett's.
