1830 Michael Bortner lived in Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 2 (5 thru 9), 1 (10 thru 14), 1 (15 thru 19), 2 (20 thru 29), and 1 (50 thru 59); and females: 2 (under 5), 1 (10 thru 14), 1 (15 thru 19), and 1 (30 thru 39). [7]

1838 Catharina Bortner died on October 9 and was buried at New Hope United Church of Christ Cemetery (Fissel's) Church Cemetery, Glen Rock, Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [8] [9] [10]

1850 Michael Bortner (age 67, born in Pennsylvania) lived in South Codorus, York County, Pennsylvania with George Markle (age 38), and Cath Bortner (age 20). [11]

1860 Michael Brotner (age 80, born in Pennsylvania) lived in Shrewsbury, York County, Pennsylvania, at post office Shrewsbury, with Solomon Wehrley (age 41), Sarah Wehrley (age 42), Mantilla Wehrley (age 16), Edward Wehrley (age 15), Cassie Ann Wehrley (age 14), Sarah A Wehrley (age 12), Abdiel Wehrley (age 10), Levina Wehrley (age 8), Noah Wehrley (age 6), Joshua Wehrley (age 4), and Milton A Wehrley (age 1). 1870 Micheal Bortner (age 90, born in Pennsylvania) lived in Shrewsbury, York County, Pennsylvania, at post office Glen Rock, with Sol Wherley (age 51), Sarah Wherley (age 52), Mantilla Wherley (age 24), Lovina Wherley (age 18), Noah Wherley (age 17), Joshua Wherley (age 14), Milton E Wherley (age 11), Malinda Wherley (age 9), and Jemima Wherley (age 5). 1870 Michael Bortner died on October 21, at age 89y 11m 1d, and was buried at New Hope United Church of Christ Cemetery (Fissel's) Church Cemetery, Glen Rock, Shrewsbury Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [14] [15] [16] [17]

"Henry M. Bortner, son of Michael and Catherine (Marckel) Bortner, of Codorus and Shrewsbury Townships, respectively, was born January 8, 1821, in Codorus Township, and is the second in a family of eight children … Our subject's father, John Michael Bortner, died October 21, 1870, in his ninetieth year. Subjects paternal grandparents were Ludwig Bortner and Ablona (Florschner) Bortner, and were among the pioneer settlers of Codorus Township.". [18]

"Jonas M. Bortner, son of Michael and Catherine (Marckel) Bortner, of Shrewsbury Township, was born December 17, 1824, in Codorus Township. He received the ordinary common school education available at that day, and was reared on the farm. In February, 1849, Mr. Bortner married Catherine Bortner, daughter of Jacob and Catharine (Garwick) Bortner, of Codorus Township.". [19]

Michael Bortner, grandfather of Mrs. Bortner, our subject's wife, was born Nov. 20, 1780, son of George, and died Oct. 21, 1870, aged eighty-nine years, eleven months, one day. He was thirteen years and fifteen days on his sickbed. He was twice married, his first wife being Margaret Markel, by whom he had four children: John, born Feb. 16, 1808 (married Catharine Kerchener) ; Michael, Nov. 2T,. 1809 (married Catharine Sweitzer) ; Elizabeth, Feb. 18, 181 1; and Jacob, Jan. 13, 1814 (married Catharine Walker). His second wife, Catherine Markel, bore him these children : Sarah, born June 15, 1818; Jared, Oct. 18, 1819; Henry M., Jan. 3, 1821 ; Jonas, Dec. 7, 1823 (married Catharine Bortner) ; Lydia, Nov. 24, 1825; Cassian, Aug. 30. 1828; Catherine, July 12, 1831 ; and Noah, Jan. 22, 1835.
