Notes for Ebersole

Research Notes:

We are researching Jacob Ebersole, who died in Donegal Twp, Lancaster County in 1785. We suspect that his son Jacob married Fronica Mellinger and died in 1828. Tax records suggest that Jacob (died 1785) was already living in Donegal Twp in 1750. The documents below suggest that both Jacob (died 1785) and Jacob (died 1828) lived and paid taxes in Donegal Twp by 1756. We seek further documentation about this family. The notes gathered below include our research notes for several Ebersol contemporaries of Jacob Ebersol (died 1785). We do not know if or how they were related to Jacob, but they are shown here as brothers in order to simplify access to our research notes about them.

Several Eversol families arrived in Pennsylvania in the early 1700s. Several books and articles have been published about the Ebersol pioneer families of Lancaster County. Several of these published works have errors and disagree with each other. Several of these publications assume that Jacob Ebersol (died 1828) was the same person as Jacob Ebersol who arrived in America in 1763.

Rev. Charles E. Ebersol, in The Ebersole Families in America, names six Pioneer families and their year of arrival: 1a Abraham (Sept 27, 1727), 1b Johannes (Sept 3, 1739), 1c Peter (Sept 3, 1739), 1d Jost (Sept 3, 1739), 1e Carl (Sept 24, 1753), 1f Jacob (Nov 1, 1763). [1] This book has many errors and Albert Gerberich [below] suggests that it should never have been published.

Albert Gerberich, in "The Ebersoles of Early Lancaster County", cites Mrs. Ardella A Ebersole and provides a summary with a focus upon the descendants of Jacob Ebersol (died 1785 in Donegal Twp), perhaps the immigrant of 1763. [2] The Roman Numerals I to VI in the article correspond to the letters a-f in the book by Charles E. Ebersol.

I. Abraham (immigrant of 1727). II. Jost (immigrant of 1739), father of III. Johannes and IV. Peter. V. Carl (immigrant of 1753).
VI. Jacob Ebersohl (died in Donegal Township, Lancaster County, 1785) and his wife Frances (Veronica) are the ancestors of most of the family of the name in Lancaster County. [a footnote suggests that this is Jacob, the immigrant of 1763] They had five sons: 1. John. 2. Deacon Jacob (died in Donegal in 1828) married Fannie Mellinger (died 1822). 3. Christian. 4. Martin. 5. Daniel.

Robert A. Heilman, in Jacob Ebersoll the Immigrant of 1763 and his Descendants, [3] confuses the 1763 immigrant with Jacob Ebersole Senior, and then has his son being born in Donegal, Lancaster County in 1757 before they had arrived in America.

Robert S. Kreider, David Smucker, and Roy H. Umble, in An Ebersol Story: the ancestry and descendants of Abraham D. Ebersole (1822-1892) and Anna Rutt (1827-1904), expand the list of immigrants to include Jacob (immigrant of 1754) with this summary [this book has primary sources and identifies ambiguities] [4]:

This much we know: the Philadelphia ship passenger lists show five instances of Ebersole immigration involving seven persons: Abraham in 1727; Peter, Jost and Johannes in 1739; Karl in 1753; Jacob in 1754; and Jacob in 1763. The Donegal Township (Lancaster County) Ebersoles most likely stem from one or both of the Jacob Ebersole immigrants (1754 and 1763), but two complicating factors make it difficult to prove with certainty the Pennsylvania ancestors of Abraham Ebersole (b. 1822). First, we cannot identify with certainty all the descendants of the 1727 immigrant Abraham. Since he had a son named Jacob (and perhaps other sons), it is difficult to distinguish the various Jacobs. The second factor is that the two immigrant Jacobs of 1754 and 1763 have a name that appears often in colonial records.

Secondary sources describe the 1763 immigrant Jacob as the one who died in 1785 and wife Veronica who were ancestors of most of the Mennonite Ebersoles in Lancaster County, including a Jacob (1759-1828). In William W. Davis, History of Whiteside County, Illinois, under a sketch of Abraham’s son David, it is stated that the "ancestry of the Ebersole family can be traced back to a Jacob Ebersole, who came from Switzerland … and David P. Ebersole … is … in the fifth generation." This would point to either the Jacob of 1754 or the Jacob of 1763. These researchers, however, have not provided primary source documentation. And so we wait in suspense for our authentic Jacob Ebersole ancestor to step out of the archival closet and identify himself. If given a choice, writers of family history prefer the earliest date. In this section on Lancaster County we vacillate among the various options. To tell the story we lean toward immigrant ancestors of 1727 or 1739.

Richard Warren Davis [5] has suggested that Jacob Ebersole (died 1785, spouse of Freny) might have been a son of Abraham (immigrant of 1727), son of Benedict of Friedelsheim, Germany.

John Umble, in Genealogical Record, Descendants of Preacher Abraham Burkholder Ebersole and His Wife Anna Ebersole Rutt, focuses upon Abraham (1822-1892), son of David Mellinger Ebersole [son of Jacob Ebersole and Feronica Mellinger] [6]

Harry J Portzer, in A Genealogical History of Abraham Ebersole of Dauphin County and His Wife Eve Staufer, focuses on Abraham, perhaps a son of the immigrant Abraham of 1727.

None of the publications listed above cite the tax records of Lancaster County in any detail, perhaps because those records were not digitally available at the time of publication. Those tax records provide substantial documentation and some clarification about these Ebersol families. None of the publications listed above can account for the Jacob Ebersol who paid taxes in Donegal Twp in 1750 and 1751.

There were several Jacob Ebersole families living in Donegal Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania at overlapping times. Several documents (see especially tax of 1820-21) suggest that the Jacob who dated his will in 1828 was likely Jacob Ebersole Jr, spouse of Feronica Mellinger and son of Jacob Ebersole Senior, minister. We have organized the several Jacob Ebersol families of Donegal Twp during this time period as follows. The list of Jacob Ebersole families includes a family with three generations: 1) father Jacob Sr (1724-1785) with wife Frances Veronica and son 2) Jacob Ebersole Jr (1756-1828) with wife Fronica Mellinger and 3) grand son Jacob Mellinger Ebersole. Also 4) Jacob son of Martin Ebersole and spouse of Veronica (daughter of 2). Also 5) Jacob son of Christian [Christian is a brother of 1]. Also 6) Jacob son of Daniel [Daniel is a brother of 1]. Also 7) Jacob Ebersole (1715-1790) [7] and son 8) Jacob (1753-?) with wife Barbara Good, whose relationship to the others listed is unclear.

In addition, deeds show that a Johannes (John) Ebersol had a son named Jacob. John and son Jacob were of Rapho Twp and son Jacob moved to Mount Joy Twp. Jacob of Donegal Twp was not the son of Johannes of Rapho Twp, as the notes below show.

Tax records and other records for Ebersole families in Donegal Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania are listed below. The Ebersole name never appeared at Maytown or Elizabethtown records, which had separate lists.

1785 The tax records after the death of Jacob continued to name Jacob (smith), Jacob (junior), Jacob (senior), none with more than 150 acres. This suggests that it was Jacob (big, junior, who owned 180-200 acres) who died in 1785 and that a different Jacob was then called Jacob (junior) after his death.

1786 Three adjacent tracts of land, labeled on this map by the original warranters named Samuel Black and David Gilson and by a symbol of three concentric circles, which was called "Black Oak Ridge", were owned by Jacob Ebersole. The will of Jacob, born 1724 suggests that he owned two of them, at least, before he died. Abraham Stoner settled on the Susquehanna River (next to the letters NN) south of the tracts owned by Jacob Ebersole's family. Their daughter Mary Ebersole came to marry Abraham Stoner's son, Christian Stoner, sometime before 1810.

Notes for Johannes Ebersole. One report states with confidence that Jacob Ebersol, of Donegal, was a son of Johannes [213]. However, deeds and tax records show that Jacob, son of Johannes, lived in Rapho Twp until about 1785, and then moved to Mount Joy Twp about 1790, never living in Donegal Twp. Several deeds recorded the disposition of the estate of John Ebersole, recounting that John Ebersoll, late of Rapho Twp, signed his will on March 28, 1770 with executors Christian Haldiman, Jacob Houser, and Jacob Snyder. Son Yost, or Joseph, was to have the tract situated on the Little Chickosalungo Creek, along Samuel Scott's line. The remainder was divided among three other sons: Abraham, Christian, and Jacob. The division was made by men chosen with consent of the widow and all of the heirs. The original tract had been patented to John Ebersole [father of Joseph, Abraham, Christian, and Jacob] on March 10, 1760. Son Jacob was of Rapho Twp in 1785 and was of Mount Joy Twp in 1790. [214]

1739 On September 3, Peter Eversool, Jost Eversool, and Johannes Coubersohl arrived in Philadelphia on the ship Robert and Alice. There were 78 men over age 16, who were named, with 218 total passengers on the ship. If Jacob was on the ship, he was under age 16. [215] The names were also reported as Jost Ebersohl and Johannes Ebersohl. [216] On September 3, Peter Eversool, Jooste Eversool and Johannes Conberfose took the oath and were qualified, in Philadelphia. [217]

1739 On November 30, land was surveyed for Jacob Snider. [219] An adjacent tract was labeled "James Duncan". [220]

1751 On March 20, a 300 acre tract in Rapho Twp was surveyed for John Eversole. [221] Adjacent landowners included the Widow Eversole. A survey of the widow Eversole tract was made in 1769 to John Eabersohl in right of Yost Eabersohl. [222]

The survey for George Potts [229] showed an adjacent tract for Christian Haldeman.
