Notes for Maria Hershey

We are researching Benedict Mellinger, who died about 1795 in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, with daughter Feronica, who was married to Jacob Ebersole. We suspect that Benedict's wife was Maria Hershey, widow of Jacob Musser.

c1734 Benedict Mellinger, son of Johannes Mollinger, was born in Germany. [1]

c 1748 Mary Hershey and Jacob Musser were married and they had several children.

Two different immigration dates, 1749 and 1754, have been found for Benedict Mellinger. Benedict Mellinger was not taxed in Manor Twp until 1757, so either, he did not emigrate until about that time, or he lived in a different place until then.

1749 Benedict Mellinger, perhaps this Benedict, and father Johannes Mellinger arrived in Philadelphia on September 9, on the ship St. Andrew with Ship master James Abercrombie from Rotterdam, last from Plymouth, with 400 passengers. [2] [3] [4] [5]

1754 Benedict Mellinger; born about 1734 and son of Jacob, born 1660; left the family Hemshof farm in Germany and immigrated to Philadelphia on the ship Brothers with his brother Abraham. [6]

1751 Jacob Mosser was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [7] [8]

1754 Jacob Mosser was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [9]

1755 Mary Hershey Musser's first husband, Jacob Musser, died. [10] The will of Jacob Mosser was dated December 27, 1754 with probate date December 13, 1756. Wife: Mary Mosser. Children: John and Benjamin. Executors: Peter Mosser and Jacob Hostetter. Witnesses: Benjamin Hershey, Christian Marti, and Abraham Hostetter. [11]

1756 Widow Moser was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Her name appeared adjacent to that of Christian Hershey. [12]

1756 Benedict Mellinger and Maria Hershey [Musser, widow of Jacob Musser] were married [13] [14].

1757 Benedict Mellinger was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His name appeared adjacent to that of Christian Hershey Jr. [15] [16]

1758 Fannie Mellinger, daughter of Benedict Mellinger and Mary Hershey, was born on January 15. [17]

1759 Maria Hershey's brother Christian and his wife Barbara Hershey of Lancaster County granted land to Maria Hershey, spinster, on July 4. It was a 100 acre tract in Hempfield Twp, which was part of a larger tract previously granted to Christian Hershey in 1736 by James Logan. The land was next to land of Jacob Liter and Anna Elizabeth Hershey (perhaps Maria's sister). [18] This deed was mentioned in a subsequent deed DD-216, dated 1785 in which the heirs of Mary Hershey-Musser-Mellinger transferred this land. Why was Maria Hershey described as a spinster in this 1759 deed if she was already widow Musser? Perhaps spinster was used in this case for a widow, in addition to a never married woman. Perhaps the date on this deed DD-210 was transcribed incorrectly into the deed book when it was registered several years later.

1758, 1759, 1763, 1765 Benedict Mellinger was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26]

1764 The Proprieters of Pennsylvania granted 222 acres of land in Manor Twp, Lancaster County to Andreas Krist on June 13. [28] [29] Jacob Grist had previously received a warrant for the land in 1743. [30] Andrew deeded the tract to Benedict Mellinger on June 13, the same day that the patent was issued. [31] A survey was made for Jacob Crist, showing the land in Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County with Peter Shallenberger, Woolrick Shallenberger, and Mich Birler (named as Mich'l Bixler on another survey made for Wolrich Shallenberger) as adjacent landowners. [32] [33]

1769 Benedict Mellinger and Johannes Pence Mosser [perhaps Maria's son Benjamin Moser?] were taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [34] David Mellinger was taxed as a freeman. [35]

1770 Benedict Mellinger and Pence Moser [perhaps Maria's son Benjamin Moser] were taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [36] David Mellinger was taxed as a freeman. [37]

1771 Benedict Mellinger was taxed £1. in Manor Twp, Lancaster County for 200 acres, 2 horses and 3 cattle. [38] Jacob Mellinger was also listed with rent to pay to Christian Kaufman. Benjamin Mosser (80 acres) and John Mosser (50 acres) were also listed [perhaps sons of Maria and Jacob Musser].

1772 Benedict Mellinger was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County for 50 acres uncultivated, 50 acres cultivated, 2 horses, 2 cows, 2 horned cattle, and 3 sheep. [39] [40]

1772 John Mosser (80 acres) and Benja Mosser (70 acres) were taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County for old rights land. [41] [42]

1773 Benedick Mellinger was taxed £18.0 in Manor Twp, Lancaster County for 50 acres W land, 50 acres C land, 2 horses, 4 cows, and 3 sheep. [43] [44]

1773 The children and heirs of Benjamin Hershey settled the ownership of two tracts of land from Benjamin's estate by a deed dated May 14. Christian Hirshy and wife Ann, of Warwick Twp, Jacob Hostetter and wife Ann, and Benedict Mellinger and wife Mary, sold land to Benjamin Hershey, of Warwick Twp. Ann and Mary were named as daughters and Christian and Benjamin were named as sons of Benjamin Hershey, deceased. The first tract of 175 acres in Lancaster Twp was part of a 1000 acre tract patented on November 30, 1730 [45] to Hans Pupather [Brubacher] and Christian Hershy. Christian died intestate with heirs Benjamin, Andrew, and Ann. Heir Benjamin, son of Christian, was granted the tract by Hans Brubacher, Andrew, Ode Hirshy (widow and relict of Christian Hershey deceased), and Herman Long husband of Ann. This first tract was next to land of Hans Brubacher and of Jacob Brubacher. The second tract of 74 acres was next to the estate of John Dehuff, Jacob Brubacher, late Christian Stoneman, and John Meyer and James Hamilton. The second tract was also part of the 1000 acre patent and was granted to heirs of Christian Hershey, then by them to Hans Brubaker in 1731, then by the heirs of Hans Brubaker to Benjamin Hershey in 1760. [46]

1785 The children of Maria Mellinger, previously Maria Musser, previously Maria Hershey, made settlement on September 27, about a tract of land in Warwick Twp, previously Hempfield Twp, Lancaster County, as specified by an indenture, dated 4 July 1749, made by Christian Hershey (see 1759 deed). Marie had recently died intestate and left seven children named as John, Benjamin, Ann, Frena, David, Christian, John Mellinger, and two grand-children named Henry Musser and Ann Musser by son Jacob Musser of Manor Twp, deceased. Parties to the settlement included John Musser and wife Susanna of Manor Twp, Benjamin Musser and wife Magdalen of Manor Twp, Henry Wanner and wife Ann (daughter of Maria) of Codorus Twp York County, Jacob Ebersole and wife Frane (daughter of Maria) of Donegal Twp, and David, Christian, and John Mellinger all three of Manor Twp and Elizabeth the wife of John Mellinger; who sold the tract to Jacob Hostetter of Warwick Twp. [55] [56]

1785 Benedict Mellinger, yeoman of Manor Twp, sold land in Warwick Twp to Jacob Hostetter, of Warwick Twp, on September 27. The tract, then in Hempfield, had been granted to Christian Hershey by James Logan Esquire on September 22, 1736. Christian Hershey and wife Barbara granted 100 acres of the tract to Maria Hershey on July 4, 1759. The land was next to land of Jacob Liter (spelling unclear), Anna Elizabeth Hershey, James Logan, and Christian Hershey. Maria Hershey then married Benedict Mellinger and had several children and then died, leaving the tract to Benedict. Benedict signed his name in German. [57]

He named his 4 children David, Christian, John, and Fronica wife of Jacob Ebersole. Son David was to inherit the 222 acre plantation in Manor Twp. Research Notes:

Benedict Mellinger's ancestry is not certain. His father has been reported to be Johannes Mellinger, born c 1690, son of Jacob Mellinger, born c 1660. [85] His father has also been reported to be Johaness Mellinger, born c 1712. [86]. I don't know which, if either, is right. Both reported ancestries lead to him being a descendant of Jacob Mellinger, born 1660.

The identity of Mary Hershey's father is certain. We show her as a daughter of Benjamin Hershey based on a deed dated 1773 (cited in the notes above) naming Mary, wife of Benedict Mellinger as a daughter of Benjamin Hershey, deceased. Mary's father has been incorrectly reported to be Christian Hershey (1719-83) [87] [88] or Christian Hershey married to Barbara Hostetter [89]. Note that Christian Hershey (and not Benjamin Hershey) was taxed in Manor Twp during this time, perhaps motivating the erroneous reports.

1751 Christian Hershey (but not Benjamin) was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [90] [91]

1754 Christian Hershey (but not Benjamin) was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [92]

1756 Widow Moser was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Her name appeared adjacent to that of Christian Hershey. [93]

1756 Christian Hershey was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [94] [95] [96]

1757 Christian Hershey was taxed in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [97] [98] [99]

The tax records in the notes might have duplicate listings because different data sources might label the years differently.

1772 Benj'n Mellinger was taxed £1. in Manor Twp, Lancaster County for 50 acres clear, 150 acres woodland, 2 horses and 4 cattle. [100] [101]

1784 Abraham Stauffer of Manor Twp, Lancaster County, sold land to Jacob Millinger, on the Susquehanna River in Hempfield. [102]
