Notes for John Peter Stoner

1741/49 Johann Peter Stainer, son of Abraham Stainer and Barbara Stainerin geb. Laubin, was born on April 30 in Warwick. He was baptized at the Moravian Church in Salisbury at age 8 on February 11, 1749 by br. Cammerhoff with witnesses Anton Wagner, Joh. Munster, Sebastian Knaus, and Jac. Ehrnhardt. [1] [2]

Johann Peter Steiner, who went by the name of Peter, was educated in the Moravian school at Emmaus and, for five years, served in the Moravian school at Nazareth, Pennsylvania. Later he followed the trade of wheel-wright at Bethlehem, living in a shop which he erected for himself near the bretheran's house. He never married.

1789 Peter Steiner, Bethlehem Township, wheelwright, mortgaged 75 acres, 131 perches. lot #5 in Allen Township, part of Dry Land Tract, on west side of road from Ft. Allen to Bethlehem, adjoining George Ehret, one Hertzel, Henry Shearer, Frederick Batt, Bethlehem Land, crossing the road, then by land late of Jeremiah Longhorn, George Henry Hertzell, to John Penn, the younger, and John Penn, the elder, for 106 pounds. This tract had originally been granted to Peter Steiner on 30 November 1789. Deed dated December 1. [3]

1790 Peter Steiner, Bethlehem, wheelwright, took out a mortgage for 27 acres, 96 perches, in Salisbury Twp, adjoining John Kegg, Neuhard's other land, Andrew Kegg, Martin Ritter, and John Ritter, for 120 pounds of Bank of North America. The mortgagor was Peter Neuhard, Salisbury Twp, yeoman. Deed dated June 21. [4]

1797 Peter Steiner, Bethlehem, wheelwright, signed a second mortgage for 150 acres, a messuage and tenement, in Salisbury Twp. adjoining Fredrick Stuber, United Brethren, and others. The mortgagor was Nicholas Ueberroth, Salisbury Twp, tavern keeper. Deed dated November 30. [5]

1795 The will of Peter Steiner was dated September 1, 1795 and was affirmed in probate on June 9, 1796. The will mentioned: his sister Msgdalene, wife of August Henry Frank, at Schoeneck; brother Henry, and Henry's daughter Elizabeth; sister Elizabeth Steiner, spinster, of Bethlehem; brother Jacob Steiner; sister Barbara whose daughter was the wife of Johannes Reitz at Salem, North Carolina; nephew Peter Steiner, son of Henry; brother Abraham Steiner, deceased, who left children Abraham, John, Henry and Elizabeth; Hsnnah wife of Michael Knaus of Plainfield, and in case of her death the bequest to go to her son Abraham; John Heckewelder, Bethlehem; missionaries of the brethren among the Indians, 50 pounds; missionaries among the heathan "my two shares of Bridge over the Lehigh near bethlehem;" 50 pounds toward building of new Church in Bethlehem; 30 pounds for the Poor of Bethlehem; Magdalene, called Magdalene Moor, 10 pounds. The executors were Gottleib Stauber and Borhek and John Hasse, Esq. [6]

1796 John Peter Steiner died on May 28, 1796 and was buried at Moravian Cemetery, Bethlehem, Northampton County, Pennsylvania. The record of Moravian interments in Bethlehem reports he was born on May 11, 1741 and the date of birth in his baptismal record is April 30, 1741, reflecting the change from the Gregorian to the Julian calendar.

John Peter Steiner, 1741-96, born at Warwick (Lititz), was educated in the Moravian school at Emaus and, for five years, served in the Nazareth school. Later he followed the trade of wheel-wright at Bethlehem, living in a shop which he erected for himself near the Brethren's House. He remained single.
