Notes for Andrew Kauffman

c 1698 Elizabeth Kneisley was reportedly born about this time. [1]

1716 Andrew Kauffman reportedly came from Freisenheim where he was recorded as a Mennonite in 1716. Freisenheim is in Baden-Wurttenberg, Germany. [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

1717 Andrew Kauffman may have left Rotterdam, Holland in early June and arrived in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in September in one of three ships whose arrival was recorded but whose passengers were not listed. [7] [8] [9] [10]. Andrew Kauffman, age 22, died 1742, Manor Twp, Lancaster County has been reported on the ship. [11]

1718 Andrew Kauffman settled on 200 acres adjoining Isaac Kauffman on the west, part of the 5000 acre tract warranted by Hans Herr and Martin Kendig. This tract and tracts of John Witmer and Michael Miller were surveyed on May 31, 1718. Michael Kaufman's heirs surveyed land at Landisville on June 2, 1718 and Henry Musselman surveyed adjoining land the same day. [12]

1717 Andrew Kauffman married his first wife, perhaps in Conestoga Manorland House, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. His second spouse has been reported to be Elizabeth Kneissle.

1718 Andrew Koffman 12 [acres or pounds?] £0.3.0 appeared on the tax list for Conestogoe Rate, Dutch Inhabitants, Chester County, Pennsylvania. [13] [14]

1724 Andrew Coffman was taxed in Conestoga, Lancaster County.

1723-26 Christian Kauffman, the second son was born in 1723 and the next child was a son born 1726. The two oldest sons were born of Andrew's first wife, according to a 1741 deed [20], so his first wife died after 1723 and Andreas remarried to Barbara Kneisley sometime before 1726.

Andrew Kauffman married, second, Elizabeth Kneisley. [21] [22]

1725 Andrew Coffman was taxed in Conestoga, Lancaster County.

1737 Andrew Coffman received a warrant for 462 acres, on Conestoga, Manor Twp, Lancaster County, on November 2. [34] [35]

1737 Andrew Kauffman was bonded as an administrator at the death of Isaac Kauffman, neighbor to the east. [36]

1741 And Whereas the said Andreas Kauffman [Coffman] ... died leaving issue six sons and six daughters: Andrew Koffman, Christian Koffman, Michael Koffman, John Koffman, Jacob Koffman, and Isaac Koffman, Ann the wife of Alexander Stockslegel, Elizabeth the wife of Christian Myer, Mary the wife of Christian Shank, Barbara the wife of Michael Shank, Magdaline the wife of John Corral, and Frena the wife of Jacob Witmer and in and by his last will and testament bearing date 12 March 1741 ... two sons by first wife (being Christian and Andrew Koffman) should cast lots to determine which should have the land, with equal shares of the appraisal to all his children ... it was agreed among the parties that eldest son Andrew Coffman should have the tract of land paying the other children for their shares. [37] [38]

1744 The will of Andrew Kauffman was marked A KM, but was recorded by the clerk as Andrew Coffman, with date 22 Nov 1744 [perhaps the probate date]. The will, dated 12 March 1741, names wife Elizabeth and the part she brought and children by two wives and named Andreas and Christian, perhaps sons. [39] Deeds, summarized below, name 12 children. The inventory of his estate was appraised 1 November 1744 by John Furry at £1097 and included books, among many farming and household items. [40] [41] [42]

A Kauffman genealogy reports a transcription of the will of Andrew Kauffman [43]:

As the beloved (Saviour) died, so I, Andreas Kaufman, full of sickness, thus make my Will and Tes'ament, willing to my family just how my property shall be disposed to my wife and children after my decease. First—what has been brought together, shall be valued at a disposable rate; and my wife, Elizabeth, shall take the value of her part which she brought me and what I brought her and divide equally among my children, taking first choice herself. From whatever is gotten from the sale of our estate, my children are to have two shares and my wife one share. If any of the children are small at the time of my death, they shall be left in the care of charitable and just people and supported out of the estate of us, Andreas Kaufman and wife, until they can earn their own bread. Now, the land upon which we live in Manor is to be divided into three parts, one part to have as mudh land as the other. That part on which the buildings and improvements are, is to be for the mother for her own home or place. It shall not be disposed to strange heirs; but to our children. One of my children, sons by said wife, Elizabeth shall have it at a reasonable price. But the other two parts of land, my sons by my first and last wife shall cast lots for ownership. My two sons which I had by my first wife are to have one piece of the Manor land and my old place at a reasonable rate. Andreas Kauffman, Christian Kauffman and all my children shall be equal heirs. But, if the children of my first and last wives agree to live loveably together with the mother of which I now approve, then all my children shall have equal shares of my estate as appraised after my decease.

This above mentioned Will is by me, Andreas Kaufman, marked with my own hand and mark and name instead of seal. Dated 1741, 12 of March.

We, the underwritten, acknowledge the above said. Hans Horsha, Christ Stoneman, Hans Witmore

Probated the latter part of 1744 at Lancaster, Penna.

1751 Andrew Coffman Sr, Andrew Coffman Sr, and Christian Coffman were taxed in Manor Township, Lancaster County. [44] [45]

1754 Andreas, Andrew, and Christian Cofman were taxed in Manor Township, Lancaster County. The next page, perhaps a different list (of single men?), named Jacob, John, Christian and Michael Cofman. [46]

1756 Andrew Coffman Sr was taxed with 100 acres, 5 acres winter grain, 2 horses, 1 mare, 5 horned cattle, and 4 sheep. Andrew Jr (150 acres), Michael (50 Acres) Christian Jr (50 acres), Jacob (50 acres), John (50 acres), and Christian Sr (130 acres) were also listed. [47] [48] [49] [50] [51] [52]

1759 Andrew Koufman Jr and Sr were taxed and listed together on the same page of the tax record. Andrew Koufman Jr was listed separately. [53] [54] [55] Andrew Sr (150 acres) and Jr (100 acres) were yeomen with land by deed (not possession). [56]

1759 Elizabeth Kneissle Kaufman died and was buried at Andrew Kauffman Graveyard, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Elizabeth Kneissle Kaufman was born in 1698. [57] [58]

1761 The heirs of Andreas Kauffman [Koffman], deceased; named as Christian Koffman and Barbara his wife, Michael Koffman and Catharine his wife, John Koffman and Barbara his wife, Jacob Koffman and Magdaline his wife, Isaac Koffman, Alexander Stockslegle and Ann his wife, Christian Myer and Elizabeth his wife, John Corrall and Magdaline his wife, Christian Shank and Mary his wife, Michael Shank and Barbara his wife, Jacob Witmer and Frena his wife; sold their shares of the estate to Andrew Koffman (eldest son), on June 13. The last six wives were daughters of the said Andreas Koffman. Widow Elizabeth her dower rights to Andrew. [59] [60]

1762 Son Andrew Kauffman inherited the family land and paid the other four sons of Andreas Kauffman for their shares of the estate. Each of the five received a warrant for land dated January 4. They were granted land patents dagted January 6. Christian [61] [62], John [63] [64], Jacob [65] [66], and Michael [67] [68] Kaufman got warrants and patents on the same dates. Jacob's patent was also related to a warrant by Andrew Kauffman [Andreas] dated November 2, 1737. [69] [70]

1765 Andrew, Widdow, Christian, Michael, Christian by N, Jacob, Isaac, and John Kofman were taxed in Manor Township, Lancaster County. [71]

1767 Andrew Kauffman and Michael Shank, administrators of the will of Andrew Kauffman, deceased, late of Manor Twp, sold land to Stephen Hornberger, on August 6. The land was part of the land described in deed G-360, dated 1761. [72]

1769 Isaac, Christian stone, Christian, Andrew, Michael, Jacob, and John Kofman were taxed in Manor Township, Lancaster County. [73]

Research Notes:

We are researching Andrew Kauffman, whose son, Christian was named in Andrew's 1741 will and estate and deed records in Pennsylvania. Many researchers suggest that Andrew Kauffman was an Anabaptist from Freisenheim, Baden-Wurttenberg, Germany when he came to America. Many researchers suggest that Andrew Kauffman was a descendant of the Steffisburg, Switzerland Hoffmans. However, no clear evidence has been found about his parents and different hypotheses have been suggested. Charles F Kauffman suggested that he was either a son of Andreas Kauffman, born 1668, (as we currently do at this website) [74] or that he was the same person as Andreas born 1668. [75] Richard Warren Davis suggested that Andrew was a son of Michael Kauffman born 1648 and Elsbeth Hirschi. [76] We do not know which, if any, of these hypotheses is correct. Two other Kauffman families also settled nearby: Michael Kauffman [77] and Isaac Kauffman [78] We seek further evidence to clarify the lineage of these American Kauffman descendants.

Some researchers suggest that Andreas and Andrew were the same person, born about 1668:

1668 Andreas Kauffman was reportedly born in 1668 in Germany. He married Elizabeth Kneissle. [79]

1689 Andreas Kaufman may have been the hosenstriker (trouser-knitter) who completed his apprenticeship at Steffisburg, Switzerland. [80]

1689 Andrew Kaufman may have moved to Freisenheim, Germany (Frieze cloth-town) perhaps to ply his trade. It was noted by the court in Steffisburg that he had departed the area about 7 years and his guardian Christian Eichelberger still held his assets. The court distributed Andreas assets with the intent to return the homestead to him, if he were to return. [81]

1743 Andreas Kauffman, born 1668, was buried at the Andrew Kauffman Graveyard, Manor Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [82]

A biosketch reports [83]:

Andrew Kauffman ( -1743) md. twice. His last wife, Elizabeth Kneissle, died about 1759. He came from Friesenheim, in Oberamt of Neustadt, Palatinate, where he is recorded as a Mennonite in 1716. Presumably he is Andreas Kaufman, the "hosenstriker," or trouser-knitter, mentioned at Steffisburg, Switzerland. To Friesenheim, or Frieze cloth town, no doubt he went to ply his trade. He left Rotterdam, Holland, in early part of June, 1717, and arrived in Philadelphia in September and located on 200 acres of land adjoining Isaac Kauffman on the west. This was part of the 5000-acre blanket warrant granted to Hans Herr and Martin Kendig on Sept. 27, 1717. This 200-acre tract was surveyed Saturday, May 31, 1718. On the same day John Witmer's 200 acres which adjoined Andrew Kauffman on the west and Michael Miller's 300 acres on the north were surveyed. It may be noted here that on Monday, June 2, 1718, Michael Kauffman's heirs had 500 acres surveyed at Landisville. Henry Musselman had 200 acres adjoining surveyed on same day. Andrew Kauffman appears on the tax list of 1718 for Conestoga Manor for 12 shillings. He was among those naturalized in 1727. When Isaac Kauffman, his neighbor on the east, died intestate in 1737, Andrew Kauffman, Isaac Kauffman's widow, Elizabeth, and Melchior Erisman, were bonded Jan. 8, 1738, to administer Isaac Kauffman's estate.

Andrew Kauffman's homestead is situated in the southwest corner of the road leading off the Lincoln Highway towards Millersville. The walled-in graveyard containing him and a son and grandchildren was ruthlessly demolished by the present owner in 1937. Prior to his death, he acquired 464 acres of land additional, which was parceled out to his four sons. His will is marked A KM but the clerk wrote Andrew Cofman. His will mentions but two sons, however, the deeds name twelve children. His will and inventory of property are already listed. His children were Christian; Andrew, who got the original homestead; John; Jacob; Michael; Isaac; Anna, wife of Alexander Stockslegel; Elizabeth, wife of Christian Meyer; Mary, wife of Christian Shenk; Barbara, wife of Michael Shenk; Magdalena, wife of John Correl; and Veronica, wife of Jacob Witmer.

Richard Warren Davis gave the following summary [84]:

Andrew Kaufman, born c1690. He was a Mennonite living at Friesenheim, Bayern, Germany in 1717. He arrived in Philadelphia in August 1717 with a large group of Mennonites. He died at Manor Township, Lancaster County in 1743. His second wife was Elisabeth Kneissley, daughter of Anthony Kneiseley. She died about 1759. He owned land next to Isaac Kaufman and near Michael Kaufman in Manor Township. He was one of the administrators of the estate of Isaac Kauffman.

Richard Warren Davis suggested that Michael Kauffman (born 1648) and Elsbeth Hirschi might be the parents of Andrew. [85]. [86]

I [Richard Warren Davis] have placed two of the three 1717 Kaufman immigrants, Michael and Andrew as his sons because it is very likely that Michael [born 1648] was an Anabaptist and he probably had more children born after he left Steffisburg. Andrew was a name very popular among the Hirschi family at Schangnau and Eggiwil and would have been another good possibility for a son's name. Andrew Kaufman, judging from the ages of his children was much younger than Michael. Michael who was born in 1675 is the only Michael Kaufman from the Steffisburg Kaufman family who fits the age of the Michael of Manor township who died in 1718. From the names of the 1717 immigrants and the large number of Anabaptists among the Steffisburg Kaufman family it would indicate that they were very likely from Steffisburg. Isaac the other Kauffman immigrant of 1717 was a first cousin to Michael and Andrew.

The Mennonite card file names Michael Kauffman and Elsbeth Horsch as parents: [87] [88] [89]

A biosketch reports [91]:

Andrew Kaufmann, the third child of Andreas, was born during 1695 in Switzerland. In 1716, Andrew was recorded as a Mennonite from Friesenheim, in Oberamt of Neustadt. Palatinate. At the Manheim conference of February 1717, the Mennonite elders of Germurt and Swiss Palatines adopted a resolution to make a mass settlement in America. lt was decided to solicit the Holland congregations for financial aid to assist in the project. At age of 22, Andrew and his first wife were two of the 363 Palatines that set sail on three ships from Rotterdam on June 1717. I saw a note that Andrew's wife died during this voyage, so she was likely buried at sea. The ships spent twelve weeks at sea, coming by way of London in Philadelphia - arriving on 8 September 1717. There is no list of the names of the ships or of their passengers, however many names can be confirmed based upon land warrants and surveys made to this group of settlers. On 27 September 1717, one of the blanket warrants for 5,000 acres was made out to Martin Kindig and Hans Herr in the vicinity of the Little Conestoga Creek in Lancaster County. This warrant was eventually cut up into smaller parcels, including 200 acres for Andrew Kaufmann which was surveyed on 31 May 1718. Andrew second wife was Elizabeth Kneissle (likely a daughter of one of the 363 settlers) they had a large family of 12 children: Andrew, Elizabeth, Christian, Michael, Jacob, Anna, John, Barbara, Veronica, Isaac, Mary, and Magdalena. Andrew Kaufmann's homestead was situated in the southwest corner of the road leading off the Lincoln Highway (currently Columbia Avenue, Route 462) towards Millersville - he eventually acquired 464 additional acres of land in the area. Andrew Kaufmann died during 1743 at the age of 48 years, and Elizabeth Kaufmann died about 1759. Andrew and Elizabeth were buried at a walled-in family graveyard on their homestead, unfortunately this graveyard was demolished by the owner of this land in 1937.

A summary of the will of Andrew Kauffman reports [92]:

Andrew Kaufmann's Will was dated 12 March 1741 and probated in 1744. The Will lists some of his children but not all, however to get a fuller list of Andrew Kaufmann's children, it is necessary to refer to the Deed Books in the Recorder's Office at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, during 1761 when a final settlement of Andrews estate was made. The Deed Book records the description of the 200-acre and 462-acre tracts, the release of the other heirs as well as reference to casting lots for the Manorland or homestead. ln accordance to the Will, Andrew, Jr., and Christian Kaufmann, sons of Andrew Kaufmann, drew lots for the homestead; which resulted in Andrew Kaufmann, Jr.'s favor, necessitating him to pay the other heirs 207 pounds sterling, and 6 shillings. The heirs releasing claim to real estate of Andrew Kaufmann are as follows; Michael Kauffman and wife, Catherine; John Kauffman and wife, Catherine Barbara; Jacob Kauffman and wife, Magdalena; Issac Kauffman; Andrew Kauffman and wife, Magdalena; Christian Kauffman and wife, Barbara; Anna, wife of Alexander Stockslegel; all of Manor Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania; Elizabeth, wife of Christian Meyer of York County, Pennsylvania; Mary, wife of Christian Shenk of Hellam Township, York County, Pennsylvania; Anna Barbara, wife of Michael Shenk of Lancaster Township and County; Magdalena, wife of John Correl of Manor Township; and Veronica, wife of Jacob Witmer, also of Manor Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

1703-1717 Andreas Kauffman fathered children at Haßloch, Neustadt, Bayern, Germany, near Heidelberg Germany, 150 kilometers north of Friesenheim, Germany. The records started in 1700. Perhaps the father Andreas was the son of Hans and the children are siblings of Andrew (born 1695). [93]

1703 Maria Christina Kauffmann, daughter of Andreas and Elisabetha Kauffman, was baptized on February 25 at Haßloch, Neustadt, Bayern, Germany. [94]

1704 Johannes Kauffmann, son of Andreas and Elisabetha Kauffman, was baptized on May 4 at Haßloch, Neustadt, Bayern, Germany with sponsor Johannes Cöwer. [95]

1706 Susanna Kauffmann, daughter of Andreas and Elisabetha Kauffman, was baptized on September 12 at Haßloch, Neustadt, Bayern, Germany. [96]

1711 Catharina Elisabetha Kauffmann, daughter of Andreas and Elisabetha Kauffman, was baptized on January 4 at Haßloch, Neustadt, Bayern, Germany with sponsor Maria Catharina wife of Joh. J(?) Kauffman. [97]

1717 Augustus Kauffmann, son of Andreas and Elisabetha Kauffman, was born on October 1. He was baptized on October 3 at Haßloch, Neustadt, Bayern, Germany. [98]
