Notes for Walter Culpeper

1304/05 Walter Culpeper was born on February 2. The IPM for his father, Thomas, held on 25 February 1326/27, states "Walter his son, aged 22 years on the feast of the Purification last, is his next heir." [1]

1340 William Gernoun died before May 26. [2]

May 26. To the sheriff of Essex. Order to cause a coroner for that county to be Westminster. elected in place of William Gernoun, deceased.

1340 "July 14. Westminster. Isabella, late the wife of William Gernoun, acknowledges that she owes to Richard de Colcestr[ia], clerk, 30l.; to be levied, in default for payment, of her lands and chattels in co. Essex." [3]

1341 Walter Culpeper and Isabel, widow of William Gernoun, were married by Trinity term when Geoffrey de Berdefeld by Gilbert de Berdefeld his attorney sued Walter Colpepir and Isabel his wife, executrix of of the will of William Gernoun, regarding a debt of £20. [4]

1358 Walter Culpeper and Elizabeth, widow of Thomas de Cobham, were married by October 6. [5] [6]

Date: One week from St Michael, 32 Edward III [6 October 1358]. And afterwards two weeks from St Hilary, [35?] Edward III [27 January 1361?].
Parties: John Colpepir, clerk, and Thomas de Weston', querents, and Walter Colpepir and Elizabeth, his wife, deforciants.
Property: A moiety of the manor of Scottegroue and the advowson of the chapel of the Blessed Nicholas of Scottegroue in the county of Kent and a moiety of 5 marks of rent in Sele and Suthewyk' in the county of Sussex, which William Wauere (or William Wanere) holds for life by the law of England.
Action: Plea of covenant.
Agreement: Walter and Elizabeth have acknowledged the moieties and advowson to be the right of John, and have granted for themselves and the heirs of Elizabeth that the moieties and advowson - which William held for life by the law of England of the inheritance of Elizabeth in the aforesaid vills on the day the agreement was made, and which after the decease of William ought to revert to Walter and Elizabeth and the heirs of Elizabeth - after the decease of William shall remain to John and Thomas and the heirs of John, to hold of the chief lords for ever.
Warranty: Warranty.
For this: John and Thomas have given them 200 marks of silver.

1359 On July 4, John, son of Thomas de Cobham, released land in Kent to Walter Culpeper and Elizabeth, widow of Thomas de Cobham. [7]

Enrollment of release by John, son and heir of Thomas de Cobham, to Walter Colepepir and Elizabeth his wife of all his right and claim in all the lands, rents and services which they hold for Elizabeth's life of John's inheritance in Kent. Witnesses: Reynold de Cobham, Richard de Totesham, Nicholas de Loveyne, Thomas de Pype, knights, John Colepepir, Geoffrey Colepepir, John Fromond and Thomas Jood. Dated Tonebregg, Thursday after SS. Peter and Paul, 33 Edward III.
Memorandum that John came into the chancery at Westminster on 4 July and acknowledged the preceding deed.

1378 Walter Culpeper and Alice, widow of Richard Charles, were married between 1 June 1378 (date of death of Richard Charles) and 26 January 1378/79, the date of assignment of dower to Alice, which notes that she married after Richard's death. [8]

1378 On October 6, Walter Culpeper participated in the settlement of land in Ashton, Northamtonshire, on Thomas Culpeper and Thomas' wife Eleanor [Alianora]. [9] The abstract of the fine states,[10]

Date: One week from St Michael, 2 Richard [II] [6 October 1378].
Parties: Thomas Colpeper and Eleanor, his wife, querents, and Walter Colpeper, deforciant.
Property: The manor of Asshen'.
Action: Plea of covenant.
Agreement: Thomas has acknowledged the manor to be the right of Walter, as that which Walter has of his gift.
For this: Walter has granted to Thomas and Eleanor the manor and has rendered it to them in the court, to hold to Thomas and Eleanor and the heirs of their bodies, of the chief lords forever. In default of such heirs, remainder to the right heirs of Thomas.

1385 Alice "late the wife of Richard Charles, or Charlys" died in April. One IPM states the day as 17 April, another as 10 April. She held land in Kent and Sussex in dower of the inheritance of Richard Charles, her husband's heir. The IPM states that Alice had been the wife of Richard Charles and married Walter Colpeper after Richard died. "Richard Charles, aged 25 years and more, is her husband's heir, to wit, son of Roger his brother." [11]
