The Indianapolis News, Indianapolis, Indiana, June 14, 1988. [25]

"The tours and visits to restaurants make this Elderhostel special" said Jack Miller of Plainfield. Ind. He and his wife Ida Mae have attended Elderhostel programs in nearby states, but the one in Indianapolis is their favorite. "More than 50 percent of the participants come back year after year." Miller said. The Millers have enjoyed the Elderhostel so much they recruited family members Elsie Good, who lives in New Jersey, and Julia Wolfe, who lives in California, to Join the fun.

"It's very convenient because it comes right after alumni week every year," said Wolfe. "Ida. Elsie and I all went to school here. It gives us time to visit and learn, too."

1989 Julia Wolfe, Ida Mae Miller, and Elsie Good were interviewed for the Alumni News when they visited the University of Indiana for the homecoming reunion. [26]

Ida Mae Miller's carrer differed from her sister's, although she too has been a musician. 'I began music lessons at the age of five, from teachers at the college, and continued summers and after school,' she said. 'When I was 10, my father decided I should have art lessons, too, so I took general handcrafts in the morning, watercolor in the afternoon. At that early age, I was attending classes with college students.' … she took up the violin in 1929. While attending high school she played viola in the school orchestra. 'Then I was asked to play with an Indiana string quartet. We played at different places, sometimes high school commencements. As a junior in high school I started taking voice lessons at the college from Esther Becker, and studied with her from 1933 to 1952.' Ida Mae graduated from Indiana Central in 1939 and posted, she said, two years to earn a social science and home economics degree. 'I taught two years in Indianapolis schools and was in the Army (Women's Army Corps) for two and a half years.' She was stationed at Presque Isle, Maine, where she 'got started in library work,' in London, England, and Cincinnati, Ohio. 'Taking advantage of the GI Bill, I was in three schools at one time - Indiana Central, Jordan College of Music and Indiana University Extension.' After earning a library degree from Columbia University, Ida Mae worked for the Indianapolis Public Library. In 1950 she married Butler graduate John 'Jack' Miller. 'And here are my two attendants,' she said with a smile, indicating her sister and sister-in-law. In June 1952, she earned another bachelor's in music at Jordan. Mrs. Miller returned to work at the Plainfield Public Library in 1966, and from 1973 to 1981 at the Indiana Historical Society Library. She and her husband, an accountant who retired from Allison's in 1980, have four children: Susan, Julia, David, and Carls, and four grandchildren.

Jack Miller was asked to give notes that told something about who he was. As was typical of Jack Miller, his story is both humorous and informative.

"As I Remember It" Who Am I?
In late 1938 - 1941 I was working in Chicago, Ill. For some reason I needed a Birth Certificate. So I wrote my father, Dr. Chester C, Miller, and asked him to please go over to the Marion Co. Court House and get one for me. This he did! When he got there and asked the nice clerk for a Birth Certificate, she asked "What name and date of birth?". She brought out the correct book and looked in the date area. "There is no John Chester Miller for that date! But here is a Chester Miller born Sept. 9, 1916, to Maeda C. Schmidt and Chester Miller.". Dad said, " That's my boy, but his name has always been John Chester Miller". "You are his father?", she asked. "Yes", he answered. "Oh! Well, there is enough room here to write in John before the Chester", she said, and she wrote in the name. Wasn't she a nice lady!

The next time I was in Indianapolis, I went to the Court House and asked for another Birth Certificate. I received a copy with the name- "John Chester Miller." I think what happened was - Mother & Dad had not picked out a boy's name for me, and they took too long in deciding what that name would be. The Doctor had to send in the birth record, so he wrote in - "Chester."

I noticed on my Butler 1938 Diploma, I am "Jack Chester Miller"
So, Who Am I? Take your pick - John - Jack - Chester.
There may be some other name that I don't want to know about!
