Notes for George Ruhl and Mary Magdalene Ruhl

Research Notes:

These notes are intended to be for Polly Ruhl, daughter of Henry Ruhl and Margaret Bailey, named in the 1830 will of Henry Ruhl. Some researchers have suggested that she was Mary Ruhl, wife of George Ruhl. We seek evidence to support or refute the hypthesis that the daughter of Henry Ruhl married George Rule of Morrow County, Ohio. There may have been several men named George Ruhl in Ohio during this time.

1827 George Rhule appeared on the tax list for Perry Twp, Richland County, Ohio. [1] [2]

1828 George and Mary Ruhl moved with their families from Baltimore County, Maryland to North Woodbury, Ohio and built a cabin in the woods with a puncheon floor. Their farm consisted of 160 acres on NE ½ of Section 19 Range 19 W Twp 19 N. They lived in the cabin before clearing the land and building the house which he then sold to his brother's son-in-law, Norman Merwine when he left Ohio. [3]

1830 Henry Ruhl of Sandusky Twp, Richland County, Ohio dated his will January 5, with probate March 2. The will named Henry's daughter Polly Rule ($100), among other heirs. [4]

1832 Son Henry Ruhl was born on September 3, in Ohio to George and Mary (Ruhl) Ruhl. [5]

1836 George Ruhl was taxed in Perry Twp, Richland County, Ohio. [6]

[date unknown] George sold eight lots from his farm for the village of Woodbury and donated one to the United Brethren Church.

1840 George Ruhl lived in Perry Twp, Richland County, Ohio with 1 male under 5 yrs (Levi), and 2 males 5-10 yrs (Josiah and Henry), 1 male 20-30 yrs, 1 male 30-40 yrs (George), 1 female 5-10 yrs (Peggy), 2 females 15-20 yrs (Catherine and Eliza), and 1 female 30-40 yrs (Mary). [7]

1850 George Rule (age 43, born in Maryland) lived in Perry Twp, Morrow County, Ohio, in a household with Mary Rule (age 46), Catharine A Rule (age 22), Josiah Rule (age 19), Henry Rule (age 17), Peggy Rule (age 15), Levi Rule (age 11), Jacob Rule (age 7), and George Rule (age 1). [8]

1857 George Rule owned 157 acres in section 19 of Perry Twp, Morrow County, Ohio, based on the Woodford atlas. Adjacent land belongs to brother John Rule, William Keener, and GP Powell. [9]

1860 Geo Ruhl (age 53, born in Maryland) lived in Perry Twp, Morrow County, Ohio, in a household with Mary Ruhl (age 55, born in Pennsylvania), Levi Ruhl (age 21), Jacob Ruhl (age 15), and Geo Ruhl (age 11). Adjacent listings were for brother John (age 63) and for George P Powell and William Keener and son Henry R Ruhl (age 27). [10]

1863 George Ruhl farmed in Perry Twp until 1863 and he then engaged in trade at different places at West Point and Galion, Ohio.

c 1865 George Ruhl moved his family to Marshall County, Indiana and settled at Bourbon and then on a small farm in Green Twp, just SW of Argos Indiana. He worked as a farmer and carpenter. He was Justice of the Peace for many years as well as the Assessor and Trustee of Green Twp. He was a member and elder of the Evangelical Lutheran Church.

1867 George Ruhl converted from the Lutheran to the Methodist Episcopal Church.

1870 George Rule (age 62, born MD) lived with Henry Rule (age 37) and Matilda Rule (age 33) and their children, in Green Twp, Marshall County, Indiana. [11] [12]

1870 Mary Magdalene Ruhl Rule died on May 9 at Marshall County, Indiana and was buried at Gilead Church Cemetery, Argos, Marshall County, Indiana. Mary Magdalene Ruhl Rule was born on May 4, 1804. [13] [14]

1872 George Ruhl married Mary Ann [Newhouse] Johnson on December 11, in Marshall County, Indiana. [15]

1880 George Rule (age 73, born MD) and Mary A Rule (age 53) lived with step-children Mary M Johnson (age 29) and Edward Johnson (age 17) in Green Twp, Marshall County, Indiana. [16] [17]

1921 Mary Ann Ruhl (born 12 August 1827) died on December 22 and was buried in Gilead Cemetery, Argos, Marshall County, Indiana. [18]

1890 George Ruhl (born 6 July 1807) died on June 2 and was buried beside his wife in Gilead Cemetery, Argos, Marshall County, Indiana. [19] [20]

A biosketch reports [21]:

George Rule, the father of Mrs. Dennis, came with his family from Baltimore Co., Maryland, in 1828, and settled on a quarter section where Norman Merwine lives. It was all in woods then, and he erected a cabin with a puncheon floor, in which he lived for some time, he cleared up the farm and erected the present building before he left. He sold eight, lots from his farm for the Village of Woodbury, and donated the one on which the United Brethren Church stands; he lived on that place until 1863, when he engaged in trade at different places, first at West Point, then Galion, Ohio, and from thence to Bourbon, Ind. He now lives at Argus, Marshall Co., Ind. He was much respected by his fellow citizens, and was chosen Justice of the Peace many years, he was also Assessor and Trustee of his township. He was one of the first members of the Evangelical Lutheran Church and held the office of Elder. He raised eight children to manhood and womanhood—Catherine, now Mrs. Adam Grove of Kosciusko Co., Ind.; Eliza J., wife of subject; Josiah, farmer, near Bourbon, Ind.; Eliza, the wife of our subject; Henry R., farmer in Kansas; Margaret, now Mrs. John Gautz of Argus, Ind.; Levi, farmer at Argus, Ind.; Jacob, farmer in this township; George lives in Indiana.

1908 Son Levi Rule died on July 8 at Bremen, Marshall County, Indiana and was buried at Mount Pleasant Cemetery, Bourbon, Marshall County, Indiana. Levi Rule was born on May 30, 1839. [22] [23]
