Notes for Abraham Greenawalt and Susanna Deimler

1778 Abraham Greenawalt served in the upper district of York County. This duty may have been part of guarding prisoners at Yorktown under Daniel Doll. [1]

1778-83 Abraham Greenawalt was a Ranger on the Frontier. George Greenwalt was a lieutenant in the same list. Listed under Northampton County with captain John Gregory. [2] His pension papers reported sevice from 1779-83 under Captain Wiley in the regiment of Col. Flowers. [3]

1782 Abraham Greenawalt served in the company of Henry Greglow, 4th class 6th battalion. [4]

1786 Abram Greenewalt was listed on the septennial census for Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [5]

1793 Abram Grinewalt was listed on the septennial census for Lancaster Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [6] Another Abraham Greenawalt, perhaps father to this one, was listed in Manor Twp.

1800 Father, Abram Greenewalt, and Abram Greenewalt Junr were listed on the septennial census for Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [7]

1807 Abraham Greenawalt received 200 acres as a Revolutionary War Bounty Land Grant, on January 14.

1808 Abraham Greenawalt, perhaps this one, a soldier or private in the late Pennsylvania line, was given a warrant (#426) for 100 acres in the military district of Ohio for Revolutionary War service; dated September 27. [8]

1808-20 Abraham Greenawalt was awarded warrant #426 for 100 acres on July 19, 1808. He was allotted 200 acres in Pennsylvania by warrant #187 on the west side of the Allegheny River in Westmoreland County. His pension application was dated 1818. On July 31, 1820, Abraham Greenawalt reported that he served in Col. Flowers Regiment and that he had "one frame house and two lots of ground situate in the Borough of York, one cow, one hog and one eight day bock. My trade is that of joiner. I have no children who are in a situation to afford me any assistance." He reported his age as 62. Thomas M Thompson was his assignee for a 100 acre tract, dated May 5, 1808. [9]

1810 Abram Greenewalt lived in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 2 (under 10), 2 (10 thru 15), 2 (16 thru 25), and 1 (26 thru 44); and females: 1 (under 10), 2 (10 thru 15), 1 (16 thru 25), and 1 (26 thru 44). [10]

1811 A warrant was issued on March 14, 1811 to Thomas M Thompson, the assignee of Abraham Greenewalt, for 100 acres in Holmes County, Ohio, under authority of the June 1, 1796: United Brethren Warrant Act. Land Description: 1 7 US military survey No 9 N 8 W 2. [11]

1815 Abraham was named as a son in the will of Abraham Greenawalt of Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, dated October 6, 1808. The children may have been named in birth order. [12] [Photocopy, Extract of Abraham Greenawalt's will.]

... and I order that all my children shall have equal share out of my estate to wit Abraham Greenawald, Jacob Greenawald, Elizabeth the wife of George Albert, Christopher Greenawald, Susanna the wife of Henry Shoff, Christian Greenawald, Michael Greenawald, John Greenawald, Henry Greenawald, and Peter Greenawald each of them an equal share.

1819 Abraham Greenawalt was listed as a pensioner Pr. P.L. on 27 May, 1819. 62 (perhaps his age?) from York County. [13]

1820 Abm Granawalt [perhaps the son of Abraham and Susanna Greenawalt] lived in Manor, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in a household with Males: 2 (age 16 thru 18), and 1 (age 45 and over); Females: 1 (age Under 10), and 2 (age 45 and over)[perhaps one was widow Susan Greenawalt]. [14]

1830 Abraham Greenwalt lived in Manor, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in a household with Males: 1 (age Under 5), 1 (age 20 thru 29), and 1 (age 50 thru 59); Females: 1 (age Under 5), 1 (age 15 thru 19), and 1 (age 50 thru 59). [15]

1831 The account of Abraham Greenawalt, perhaps this one, surviving executor of the last will and testament of Abraham Greenawalt of Millerstown, Manor Twp, Lancaster County exhibited a statement of the estate at the Register's office in Lancaster county; dated May 19. The said accountant charged himself with the amount of the inventory taken upon the estate of said deceased after decease of his widow and filed in the Register's office on 9 January 1830.

1835 Abraham Greenawalt, perhaps this one, and others owning land on a proposed railroad between Harrisburg and the town of Lancaster, sold land to the Harrisburg Mount Joy Portsmouth and Lancaster Railroad for $1 each; dated June 30. [16]

1840 Abraham Grunawatt lived in Manor Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (60 thru 69); and females: 1 (20 thru 29) and 1 (60 thru 69). The adjacent listing was Martin Funk, who owned land adjacent to Abraham's estate in the August 1841 description. [17]

1840 Susanna Greenawalt renounced her rights of administration to the estate of Abraham Greenawalt on December 28. "To Samuel B Ferre Esq Register for the Probate of wills and granting letters of administratoin in the county of Lancaster. Whereas my late husband Abraham Greenawalt died intestate, whereby the right of the administration of the estate of said deceased did devolve upon me Susanna Greenawalt widow and relict of the said deceased, Now know ye that for diverse good causes and considerations my thereunto moving I have released and hereby do release all my right and title to the administration of the said estate. Witness my hand and Seal the 28th day of Dec AD 1840."

1840 The inventory of the estate of Abraham Greenawalt, of Manor Twp, Lancaster County, deceased cooper, was appraised by Jacob Mann and John Brady and exhibited to the Registrar James B Ferre on December 29. In addition to household items and farming produce, he owned "a lot of coopering tools, 1 lot of hoop poles, 1 lot of staves, and 1 lot of books".

1841 In August, a Lancaster County Orphans Court record related to Abraham's intestate settlement stated [18] [19] [20] [21] [22] [23] [24] [25] [26] [27]:

Abraham Greenawalt dec'd. On the petition of Joseph Greenawalt Admor. of and one of the children of Abraham Greenawalt, late of Manor township dec. Setting forth that said Abraham Greenawalt died intestate leaving seven children, viz Abraham, John, Henry, Abraham, Joseph, the petitioner, Susan, married to Christian Rich of Cumberland County, Pennsylvania., Esther, married to Philip Smeltzer of Ohio and Elizabeth married to Henry Crum all of whom are of full age, Seized in his dehmene as of fee of and in a certain tract of land in Manor Twp. containing about 8 or 9 acres with the appurtenances, adjoining lands of Abraham Witmer, Martin Funk, and others.

And the said petitioner praying the court to grant an order to view, value and appraise the said real estate and to make partition thereof, to and among said heirs, and legal representatives. It? is ordered by the court that the sheriff of Lancaster County do forthwith summon an inquest? to view, value and appraise the said real estate and make partition thereof according to law.

November 20th 1841. The Sheriff of Lancaster County now makes return as follows.

Inquisition indented and taken at the public house of Joseph Greenawalt in the Borough of Washington, Manor Twp on the 30th day of September 1841 before Anthony E Roberts Esq High Sheriff of the County of Lancaster by virtue of a writ of partition and valuation to him ? and to this Inquisition annexed by the oaths and affirmations of twelve good and lawful men of the bailuric? of the said sheriff viz John Landis, Jacob Neff, Christian Shumah, George B Boris?, Benjamin Kauffman, Christian Meyers, Henry Shenk, Henry Neff, Jacob Mann, Joseph Hershey, John Hostetter, John Shupp, who on their oaths and affirmations aforesaid respectively do say that on the day and year aforesaid they went to and upon the lands and tenements in said order mentioned and then and there did find that the land could not be conveniently parted to among the said heirs and legal representatives of said Abraham Greenawalt dec. without prejudice to and spoiling of the whole thereof. And therefore the said inquest do find that the same will conveniently accomodate but one of the said heirs and they accordingly do value and appraise the same at and for the sum of $2070 lawful money of the United States which report being read was confirmed by the court. Same day John Greenawalt eldest son of Abraham Greenawalt dec. appeared in court and refused to accept said real estate at the valuation. Abraham Greenawalt second son of said dec'd appeared in court and refused to accept said real estate at the valuation. Henry Greenawalt third son of said dec'd appeared in court and accepted said real estate at the valuation thereof made as aforesaid.

Whereupon the court confirmed the same to him the said Henry Greenawalt his heirs and assigned, in fee, upon his paying or securing to be paid to the other heirs and legal representatives of the said Abraham Greenawalt dec'd their several and respective shares of and in the valuation money of the said real estate so accepted by him on or before this 1st day of April 1842 without interest till due for the faithful performance of which the said Henry Greenawalt with Daniel W. Witmer and John Neff as his sureties have this day entered into a recognizance to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the sum of 1040?.

Research Notes:

There may have been several other men named Abraham Greenawalt so care must be taken to distinguish them from each other.

1842 The Orphans Court of Berks County has the following record: "The account of Jacob Hagenbugh and Magdalena Reichelderfer (late Magdalena Greenawalt) executors of Abraham Greenawalt Dec'd by which appears a balance due said estate of two hundred and sixty nine dollars and tewnty and a half cents." [28]

1760 Abraham Greenawalt was born in 1760 in Manor or Lancaster Twp. He was the son of the Revolutionary soldier who was born in Germany in 1727 and was also in the militia (see archives). (Notes from the Greenawalt family file at Lancaster Historical Society) This is a poor match to this Abraham Greenawalt, married to Susan Deimler, whose census records indicate birth 1770-1785 and whose father might be Abraham born 1745.

c 1776 Abraham Greenawalt served in the Revolutionary War as a private 8th class in Artillery in Captain Zeigler's 5th Company of Manor Township.

1778 Abraham Greenwald/Greenwolt enlisted November, 1778 as a private in Captain Wylie's Company, Colonel Flower's Continental Regiment in York, York County, Pennsylvania and was discharged in Philadelphia in 1783. He was allowed pension starting 18 May, 1818 in York County, Pennsylvania. He was the only soldier found, with that name (Abraham Greenwalt). (Letter from E.W. Morgan, acting commissioner, to Merry G Greenwald dated 8 October 1926 and letter from Wilder S Metcalf, Commissioner, to Honorable W.W. Greist dated May 9, 1923, both citing pension claim S 39609)

1785 Abraham Greenawald was listed as 3rd class in the district of the 7th company of the 9th battalion of Lancaster County between the age of 18 and 53, by Godfried Klugh.

1786 Abraham Greenawalt was married to Susan Deimler about 1786. Two children were born and died before the 1790 census (archives page 140). (Notes from the Greenawalt family file at Lancaster Historical Society)
