1813 Michael Hoffman (farmer, among the self-made men of Galion, Morrow County, Ohio) was born Nov. 11, 1813, in York County, Pennsylvania. [1][Note that the ages reported in the census are more consistent with a birthyear between 1814-1820]

"Michael Hoffman learned the trade with his father and worked at it the most of the time, until the year 1870, when he commenced working on the farm. While he was working in the shop his boys had attended to the duties of the farm, and by economy and frugality, he has obtained a splendid property; owns 160 acres of land near the town of Galion." [2]

1840 Michael Hoffman was married to Susan Bortner, daughter of Henry and Rebecca Bortner on November 26, 1840. They have eleven children, of whom five are now living: Peggy, Susan, Lovina, Amanda, and Noah. "Mr. Hoffman and wife are members of the English Lutheran Church, of which he has been Deacon a number of years." [3]. Michael Hoffman and Sally Bordner were married on 26 November, 1840 in Richland County, Ohio. [4]

1840 Michael Hoffman was taxed in Bloomfield Twp, Richland County, Ohio. [5]

1850 Michael Hoffman (age 31) and Sarah A Hoffman (age 28)(cannot read or write) lived in North Bloomfield Twp, Morrow County, Ohio with children Rebecca (age 8), Noah (age 7), John (age 6), Mary A (age 5), Caroline (age 4), Susan (age 2). Adam Hoffman (age 28) lived with them. Michael and Adam were farmers. Michael's estate had value $700 and Adam's estate was valued at $500. The children were all born in Ohio. [6] [7] [8]

1857 M. Hoffman owned 40 acres in section 7 of North Bloomfield Twp, Morrow County, Ohio, just south of brother Adam's 40 acres, based on the Woodford atlas of Morrow County. The neighbors Benjamin White and James Nail were listed in the 1860 census near the listing for Michael. Father-in-law Henry Bortner lived in section 34 of the township. [9]

1860 Michael Hoffman (age 40) a wagonmaker with estate valued at $2400+$850, and Sarah (age 37) lived in Corsica, North Bloomfield Twp, Morrow County, Ohio with children Rebecca (age 18), Noah (age 16), John (age 14), Mary (age 13), Caroline (age 11), Susanna (age 9), Jesse (age 7), Lavinia (age 6), Almond (age 4), Calvin (age 2), and Ellen (age 8 months). 1864 Michael Hoffman of Morrow County purchased 80 acres of land in section 7, twp 19, range 20, Morrow County from Charles and Elizabeth Moyer. Dated January 13.[13]

1866 Michael Hoffman of Morrow County purchased 40 acres of land in section 7, twp 19, range 20, Morrow County from John S and Catherine Davis. Dated May 15.[14]

1870 Michael Huffman (age 52) farmer, and Sarah Hoffman (age 45) lived in North Bloomfield Twp, Morrow County, Ohio with Lavina (age 16), Amanda (age 14), and Jane (age 2). The adjacent listing was for son Noah Huffman (age 26) and wife Susan (age 25). [15] [16] [17]

1880 M Huffman (age 66) farmer, and Sarah Huffman (age 54 or 59) lived in N Bloomfield, Morrow County, Ohio with daughters Lovina (age 24), and Jennie (age 13). [18] [19] [20]

1900 M Hoffman (born in Pennsylvania in Nov 1813, married for 56 years) lived in Galion Ward 4, Crawford County, Ohio, in a household with Sarah Hoffman (age 78), and Lovina Hoffman (age 35). M Hoffman's parents were both born in Pennsylvania. M Hoffman's occupation was farmer. Sarah Hoffman had had 11 children, 5 still living. [21] [22]

1900 Michael Hoffman died on September 29, at age 86y 10m 16d and was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Galion, Crawford County, Ohio. [23] [24]

1908 Sarah Hoffman (1822-1908) was buried at Fairview Cemetery, Galion, Crawford County, Ohio. [25] [26]

1908 C.H. Henkel was appointed administrator of the estate of Michael Hoffman, late of Polk Twp, Crawford County, Ohio. Sureties by Henry Kreiter, Elizabeth Barr, and Tobias Merkel. Edna Lober, Lenora Lober, Loretta Lober, and Ervin Lober and their guardians were were plaintiffs in a petition. [27] Daughter Amanda married Charles Henkel. This appointment could have been initiated when Sarah died.

1908 Notices of the inventory of the estate of Michael Hoffman were delivered to Noah Hoffman, Susan Glatfelter, Lavina Hoffman, Rebecca Lanius, and Amanda Henkel, legatees and next of kin of the said deceased. Dated March 27. The appraisal listed real estate including lot 13 in Galion Ohio, and land in North Bloomfield, Morrow County, that Noyer had conveyed to Hoffman in 1908. [28]

1924 Son Noah Huffman, married, spouse of Susan Huffman, died on November 11, at age 81, in Springfield Twp, Richland County, Ohio. Noah Huffman was buried in Lexington Cemetery. He was born on February 15, 1843, in Morrow County, OH, son of Michael Huffman and Sarah Bortner. He was Retired. [29]

1930 Daughter Susan Gladfelter died on June 5. She lived at 158 Orange St, Galion, Ohio. She was born on October 10, 1850 in Morrow County, Ohio and was a daughter of Michael Hoffman and Sarah Bortner. [30]

1940 Daughter Amanda Henkel, widowed, spouse of Charles Henkel, died on April 1, at age 80, in Galion, Crawford County, Ohio. She was born on June 15, 1859, in Morrow County, Ohio, daughter of Michael Hoffman and Sarah Bortner. She had lived at Galion, Ohio. [31]

A biosketch reports [32]:

Michael Hoffman, farmer; P. O., Gallon; is among the self-made men of this county; was born Nov. 11, 1813, in York Co., Penn.; his farther, Adam .Hoffman, was a native of York Co., and was of German descent; his mother, Susan (Ruhl) Hoffman, was also from York Co. Mr. Hoffman's father was a good mechanic, and wagon-making was his principal business. He emigrated to this state in 1838, and settled on forty acres of Government land (where Michael, now lives); after a residence of only three years on the farm, he moved to the village of Woodbury and worked at his trade the rest of his life; he died in 1858. Michael learned the trade with his father and worked at it the most of the time, until the year 1870, when he commenced working on the farm. A biographical sketch of son Noah reports [33]:

Noah Huffman, farmer; P.O. Galion; son of Michael and Sarah (Bortner) Huffman, was born Feb. 15, 1843, in what is now Morrow Co. Mr. Huffman lived under the parental roof until his marriage, and assisted his father in the management of the farm; he was married Oct. 6,1869, to Susan, daughter of James and Margaret Baggs. She was born March 12, 1838, in this township, where she has always lived. They have one child - Maggie E., born Nov. 12, 1877. Mr. Huffman is a member of the English-Lutheran Church, and his wife, of the U. P. Church. He owns over one hundred acres of land in this county, and is well fixed in life for one so young. He has always been identified with the Democratic party.
