Notes for Clement Ruhl and Anna Margaretha Berge

Clement Ruhl's wife was reportedly Anna Margaret Berge, daughter of Henry Berge. [1]

1757-58 Clement Rule served in the French and Indian War with the Maryland militia. [2]

1769 Johannes, son of Johannes and Helena Rul, was born on August 22, 1769. He was baptized on August 29, 1769, with sponsors Clemens and Anna Margaretha Ruhl, at St. Jacobs Stone Lutheran and Reformed Church, Brodbecks, Codorus Twp, York County, Pennsylvania. [3] [4]

1771 Daughter Magdalena was baptized on October 20 at St Jacob's church, with sponsors Johannes Ruhl and Helena Schenck. [5]

1774 Johann Peter, son of Clemens and Margaretha Ruhl, was born on October 8. He was baptized on December 10 with sponsors John Gantz and Elisabeth Gips, both single, at St. Jacob's (Old Stone) Church. [6] [7]

1776 Clement Ruhl and John and William Ruhl were enrolled in Captain George Hoover's Company of the first battalion of York Associators, commanded by Colonel James Smith. [8] [9]

1777 Heinrich Ruhl, son of Clemens Ruhl (deceased father) and Anna Margaretha Ruhl, was born on March 2. He was baptized on March 30. [10] [11]

1778 On 21 April, the estate of [Clemens] Clement Ruhl of Codorus Twp, York County was settled. Peter and Margaret Gerberich [Gerverigh] were administrators, she being the widow of Clemens Ruhl. Tenet in £200. Inventory made 30 March 1788 totals £99.10.3. [12]

1779 Clement Ruhl's administration account was dated February 25, 1799. Widow-Adm. Margaretta, now the wife of Peter Gerverch. Issue: John aged over 12 years, Susanna 9 years, Magdalena 7 years, Peter 4 years, and Henry over 2 years.

1779 Margaret, wife of Peter Gerverich and widow of Clemens Ruhl, petitioned that guardians be appointed for the minor children of Clemens, viz. John (aged 12), Susana (9), Magdalena (7), Peter (4), Henry (2). Their guardians were Frederich Ruhl of Shrewsbury Twp and John Ruhl of Codorus Twp. The estate was valued at £246.14.1. [13] An inventory of Clement Ruhl's is at the Probate Court of York County [14]. [15]

Came into Court Peter Gerverich and Margaret his Wife late Margaret Ruhl, the late Widow of Clemens Ruhl, late of Codorus Township deceased, and Prayed that Guardians may be appointed to take care of the Persons and Estates of John Ruhl aged twelve years and upwards, and Susanna Ruhl aged nine years and upwards, and Magdalena aged seven years and upwards, and Peter aged four years and upwards, and Henry aged two years and upwards. The minor orphan Children of the said Clemens Ruhl deceased, Which being considered by the Court It is ordered that Frederick Ruhl of Shrewsbury Township and John Ruhl of Codorus Township be and are hereby appointed Guardians of the Persons and Estates of them the said John, and Susanna and Magdalena and Peter and Henry Ruhl the minor Orphan children aforesaid.

Came into Court Peter Gerverich and Margaret his Wife late Margaret Ruhl, administrators of all and singular the goods and chattels rights and credits which were of Clemens Ruhl, late of Codorus Township deceased. And produced their administration account of the said decedents estate as settled with the Register of the County. By which it appears that there is a balance of the said Estate in the hands of the said administrators amounting to the sum of two hundred and forty six pounds fourteen shillings and one penny, subject to distribution; which being examined by the court, it is ordered that the same be and is hereby confirmed.

1788 A petition sets forth that Clement Ruhl [Rule], intestate, left a widow Margaret (since intermarried with Peter Gerberich) and issue John, Susanna wife of Martin Merkle, Molly, Peter, and Henry. The intestate owned 116 acres in Codorus Township. An inquest is awarded. The real estate was valued at £70.0.3/4 and was decreed to eldest son John Rule.

The petition of John Rule eldest son and heir at law of Clement Ruhl late of Codorus twonship in the county of York deceased was read to the Court setting forth that the said Clement Rule lately died intestate owner and seized of a certain plantation and tract of land containing one hundred and sixteen acres more or less situate in Codorus Township aforesaid adjoining lands of Dewalt Taylor and Francis Goose Henry Croan and others leaving a widow named Margaret since intermarried with Peter Gerberich and lawful issue to survive him to wit John Rule the petitioner his eldest son and heir at law Susanna intermarried with Martin Merkle. Molly Rule Peter Rule and Henry Rule. That no partition or division hath been made of the premises and praying the Court to award an Inquest to make partition or division of the premises to and amongst the said Margaret intermarried with the said Peter Gerberick and the Representatives of the said deceased of the same will admit of such partition or division without prejudice to or spoiling the whole. But if the same will not admit of such partition or division without prejudece to or spoiling the whole then to value the same undivided according to the acts of General Assembly of this State in such case be made and provided whereupon it is considered by the court and ordered that the Sheriff in his proper person with twelve good and lawful men of his bailiwick in the presence of all the parties who shall choose to attend or the guardians of such of them as are minors (they respectively having due and legal notice whereof) do hold an inquest on the said plantation and tract of land & premises and make partition thereof to and amongst the said late Widow and the Heirs and Representatives of the said Intestate of the same will admit of such partition without prejudice to or spoiling the whole otherwise to value the whole undivided according to the directions of the Acts of the General Assembly of this State in such Case made & provided and that the said Sheriff do make return of the said order as well under his hand and seal as the hands or seals of the said jurors or Affirmants to the next Orphans Court after the said inquisition shall be held. Dated May 26. [16]

John Edie Esquire High Sheriff of the County of York came into Court and made return of a former order of Orphans Court bearing date the twenty sixth day of May last past. … it appears that the same will not admit of Partition in manner aforesaid without prejudice to or spoiling the whole and that the same was of the value of seventy pounds three shillings and four pence … John Rule eldest son … prayed to be permitted to take the same at the valuation thereof he paying the late widow and other children and representatives of the said deceased their respective share thereof … Dated August 26. [17]

1800 Anna Margaret Ruhl died in December and was buried at Steltz Church, York County, Pennsylvania. [18]
