Page (age 36, born Indiana, and parents born NC and Indiana) was listed on the next line and she was keeping house. They were staying in the hotel of Francis Ireland. Both were borders and single, which is inconsistent with their common name of Page. The residence in Madison County is consistent with the 1888 Anderson directory below. [7] [8]

1880 Elizabeth S. Page (age 36, born in Indiana, single) lived in Pendleton, Madison County, Indiana. Elizabeth S. Page's father was born in North Carolina and her mother was born in Indiana. Elizabeth S. Page's occupation was house keeping. [9]

1889-1890 John R Page was a treasurer at 26 s Meridian, Anderson, Madison County, Indiana in 1889. [12]

A biosketch reports [13]:

John R. Page. Mr. Page was born in Clermont county, Ohio, on the 26th day of August, 1850, and removed with his parents to Darke county, Ohio, when quite young, where they built a cabin in the woods in 1851. In 1865 the family moved to near Union City, Indiana, where his mother died in 1868. After this John R. Page relied on himself, and his best energies were put forth to make a start in the world. He received a good, practical education in the common schools of the day, and when about eighteen or nineteen years of age learned telegraphing, and his first place was at Muncie, Indiana, as night operator, then at Fortville, Indiana, from June till December, 1872. Soon after he was transferred to Pendleton as day operator, and through the influence of Quincy Vanwinkle was made agent there, a place which he held up to June, 1888, when he resigned to make the race for County Treasurer, to which office he was elected November 6, 1888, over Henry C. Calaway, after one of the hottest contests ever made for that office, and over one of the best men in the county.

He was elected as a Democrat, and to that party he is a devoted member. At this writing Mr. Page has not taken his seat as County Treasurer. Judging from his past good record as an agent and business man, his numerous friends predict for him an honorable term as County Treasurer. During his agency at Pendleton I first met him, and have had business with him as such, and I can say he always filled that trying place, as far as I know, with fidelity and ability. He was married to Lillie Modlin November 23, 1875. There have been no little Pages added to them, and their pleasant home consists of but two Pages. Miss Modlin was raised near New Castle, Indiana, and I but re-echo the sentiment when I say that she is a true lady, whose friends are without number. Their friends have watched their progress with delight, and none are more glad of Mr. Page's election to the Treasurership than some of his political opponents. By close application to business, Mr. Page has gained a competency worthy the effort to make it.

1890 John R Page was listed as one of several founders of the Anderson Iron and Bolt Company. "Anderson Iron and Bolt Company. This institution was incorporated on the 6th day of October, 1890, and is the only institution in the city that is made up exclusively of Anderson capital. The originators of the concern were L. S. Taylor, N. J. Pilger, R. J. Walton, J. L. Forkner, W. S. Diven, T. J. McMahan, John R. Page, A. J. Brunt, William Leib, Charles Leib, George Nichol, A. I. Makepeace, J. E. Canaday, J. J. Netterville, L. M. Cox, C. S. Burr, C. T. Doxey, Lafe Swank. The capital stock is $75,000. The officers are C. T. Doxey, President; John R. Brunt, Secretary and General Manager; A. J. Brunt, Vice-President, and J. L. Forkner, Treasurer." [14]

1892 A directory of banks in Elwood City, Indiana included "The First National Bank, organized 1892, John R Page vice pres, ... n w corner Main & Anderson" [15] [16] [17]

1896 J.R. Page was named in a list of treasurers of Madison County. [18]

1898 "John R Page, of Anderson, was today appointed receiver and took charge of the Indiana affairs of the National Home Building and Loan Association of Bloomington, Ill. The suit was brought by stockholders, and not borrowers, who claim an investigation shows a loose state of affairs. The association is incorporated with $70,000,000 capital stock. Its Indiana business amounts to hundreds of thousands of dollars, mostly placed in the boom towns. It probably did more business than any foreign building and loan association operating in Indiana. Page filed bond tonight." [19]
