1771 John Jacob Wise was born on April 18, 1771. [1] His mother was Ann Mary Wise.

1770 John Jacob Wise, father of William Wise, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.

A biosketch reports [2]:

John Jacob Wise, father of William, was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania in 1767 (apparently an error), and devoted his life to farming. After attending school in his native township, and large boy, he came to Cumberland County with his father. He enlisted in the war of 1812 and when it was over returned to his native township, and there bought a tract of woodland, consisting of about 100 acres. He lived there to see the timber cleared off, and his land placed under cultivation, and excellent buildings on the property. John Jacob was one in the following family, all of whom are now deceased (published 1905): George, John Jacob, Frederick, Leonard, Michael, Mary, and Susanna. His own children were Elizabeth, who died in 1873; Joseph, who died at the age of 19 years, and William.

1773 Jacob Wise received a warrant for 100 acres in Cumberland County on June 10. [3]

1786 John Wise was executor for the will of Leonard Wolfe in Cumberland County [4]

1795 Jacob Wise was taxed in South Middleton Twp as a freeman (single, no land). [5]

1796 Sara Weiss, daughter of Jean Weiss & Anna Maria was born on June 4, with sponsors Stoffle Walles & Kristine. [6] [7]

1798 John and Frederick Wise, sons of Jacob Wise and grandsons of Jacob Wise, were named in the will of their grandfather. [8]

c 1798 Daughter Elisabeth Wise was born.

1799 Jacob Weise Jr was taxed in Middleton Twp, Cumberland County for 100 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cows. [9]

1800 Jacob Wise Junr, farmer, was listed on the septennial census for Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. [10]

1802 Jacob Weise Jr was taxed in Middleton Twp, Cumberland County for 100 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cows. [11]

1805 Jacob Weise Jr was taxed in Middleton Twp, Cumberland County for 100 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cows. [12] [13]

1806 Jacob Wise of Middleton Twp was an executor for the will of Paul Swanger of Middleton. David Brandt was a witness.

1808 Jacob Wise Jr was taxed in Middleton Twp, Cumberland County for 100 acres warrant, 2 horses, and 3 cows. [14] [15]

1811 Jacob Wise Jr was taxed in Middleton Twp, Cumberland County for 100 acres, 3 horses, and 4 cows. [16]

1812 John Jacob Wise was a farmer. He enlisted in the War of 1812. After the war, he bought 100 acres of woodland in South Middleton, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. He lived to see the woods cleared, his land cultivated, and excellent buildings on his land. [17]

1812 Jacob Wise's son William was born. [18]

1814 Jacob Wise Sen'r was taxed for 257 acres of land in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County. [19]

1815 On 16 February, John Wise, blacksmith, surveyed 20 acres in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County adjacent to William Fleming and Joshua Myers. Witnessed by Jacob Wise. [20] [21]

1817 Jacob Weise Jr was taxed for 100 acres, 4 horses, 2 mares, and 5 cows in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County. [22]

1820 Jacob Wise Jr was taxed for 100 acres, 4 horses, and 4 cows in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County. [23]

1823 Jacob Weise Jr was taxed in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County for 100 acres, 4 horses, and 4 cows. [24]

1824 On February 18, Jacob Weise senior, of South Middleton, granted land to Jacob Weise Junr, for $1 and natural love and affection. Jacob Weise senior had purchased the land from Jonathan Hasson on October 18, 1793. [25]

1824 On February 18, Jacob Weise senior, of South Middleton, granted land to Jacob Weise Junr. The land was adjacent to lands of Leonard Weise and Henry Weise. [26]

1825 On August 17, Jacob Wise Jr, of South Middleton, Cumberland County, and wife Mary, heir of Jacob Wise Sr of Allen Twp, released Rudolph Krysher, administrator, from further claims against the estate. [27]

1827 Jacob Weise was taxed in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County for 60 acres of land, log house, log barn. [28] [29]

1829 Jacob Wise was taxed as a farmer in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County for 100 acres of limestone land, brick house, log barn, 4 horses, and 5 cows. [30] [31]

1830 Jacob Weise (age 60-70) lived in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania with a female (age 50-60) and family. John Wonderlich was listed adjacent. [32]

1833 Son William married Rebecca Brechbill of South Middleton Twp and the couple lived with William's parents on their farm. [33]

1832-34 Jacob Wise was listed on the triennial tax assessment in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County as a farmer with 100 acres lime ston land, 4 horses, 5 cows, brick house, log stable. [34]


1836 Jacob Wise was on the grand jury for South Middleton.

1840 Jacob Wise (age 70-80) lived in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania close to Frederick Wise and Mary Wise Brenizer. Two other adults, perhaps son William and wife (both age 20-30) also lived with them. [36]

1843 Jacob Wise Sr, and several others, supported the application of Philip Brechbill for a tavern license in South Middleton township, cumberland County. [37]

1848 Jacob Wise of South Middleton, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania dated his will on June 30. The will was proved on August 19, 1853. Beloved wife (unnamed), son William, and daughter Elizabeth married to Henry Erben were named. Burial in Churchtown graveyard was requested. Mountain land with timber, adjacent to Jacob Strickler, for daughter Elizabeth married to Henry Erben, was mentioned. 1850 Jacob Weise (age 80, born in Pennsylvania) lived in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, in a household with Mary Weise (age 76). Son William Wise and niece Mary Wise Brenizer were listed adjacent. [40]

1853 The death certificate for John Jacob reported his date of death as Aug 14 in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and named his wife Mary. A date of birth in 1770 is based on the age at death from that record, which is consistent with the 1850 census record. Jacob's will was written 30 June 1848 and proved 19 August 1853. The certificate was reported by A.A. Line, perhaps Augustus Asbury Line, son-in-law of Jacob Wise of Churchtown who died 1715. John Jacob's will named son William, his beloved wife (unnamed), and daughter Elizabeth married to Henry Erben. He requested burial in the German Reformed and Lutheran Church in Churchtown. 1853 A physician's return in Cumberland county reported the death of John Jacob Wise, age 83 years, 3 months, and 25 days, born in Cumberland County, occupation farmer, wife Mary, died 14 August 1853 in South Middleton Twp of old age. 1853 Letters of administration for the estate of Jacob Wise, Jr
were granted to William Wise and Benjamin Kauffman.

1856 Ann Mary Wise, wife of John Jacob, born 18 October 1776 and died 31 August 1856 was buried at the Old Churchtown Cemetery, Allen, Monroe Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. [45]

1869 Son William moved away from the farm and died the same year. [46]

Research Notes:

1806 Jacob Wise and Elizabeth Weaver, both of Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, were married on September 4. [47]

It is possible that the notes above are for a different Jacob Wise and that Jacob Wise, spouse of Magdalena, who moved to Richland County, Ohio [48] refer to this son of Jacob Wise and Anna Maria Haffner. We seek help in sorting out these families.
