Notes for Thomas Barker and Ann Lloyd

1551 Thomas Barker was baptized on January 5 in Hopton Castle, Shropshire, England. John Anderson Brayton [1] concludes that the Thomas Barker who was baptised on this date died young as the Visitation of Shropshire, 1623 [2], designates his brother John as "sonne & heire" and desigates Thomas of London as "2 sonne." However, A. L. Barker [3] mentions in his analysis of the Barker family that "The great peculiarity in land tenure in the Manor of Claverley is that inheritance went by what is called Borough English. By that Custom the youngest son, by a man's first wife if he have more wives than one, ought to have the customary land." If this custom also prevailed in the Hopton Castle branch of the family, then it is perhaps plausible to assume that John, who remained at Hopton Castle, was the younger son as there is no burial record suggesting that the Thomas baptized in 1551 died and no baptism record for a second Thomas mentioned in the summary of the Hopton Castle vital records in Brayton's 2002 TAG article.

1617 Thomas Barker wrote his will on April 27. [4]

1617 The will of Thomas Barker was proved at London May 2 and administration granted to William Barker, doctor of medicine, natural and legitimate son of the deceased, and executor named in the said testament. [5]

Research Notes:

The 1623 visitation of Shropshire states that "Thomas Barker of London, doctor of phisike, ob. Ao. 1617, 2nd sonne of William Barker of Hopton Castle and Mary, sister and heire to William Titteley in com. Salop" married "Anne da. to Tho. Lloyd of Munmuthshr." It lists their children as "William Barker of London, doctor of Fisticke & now in Shropshr. Ao. 1623" and "Margaret wiffe to Frauncis Doughty." [7]
