Research Notes:

Riker states that John Moore's daughter Elizabeth married Content Titus, and of Content Titus, he states, [4]

Capt. Content Titus was b. at Weymouth, Mass., Mar. 28, 1643, being the son of Robert Titus, a respectable husbandman, who, with his wife Hannah, emigrated from near Stansted Abbey in Hertfordshire, Eng. in 1635, and settled first at Weymouth, and then at Seekonk, whence they removed, in or about 1650, to Oyster Bay, L. I. From Robert, through his sons John, Edmund, Samuel, Abie), and Content, has descended a numerous posterity on Long Island and elsewhere. Content, having lived at Huntington, came to Newtown in 1672, and in the aforesaid year bought the premises given to his father-in-law, the Rev. Mr. Moore. At his death Mr. Titus left this property to his son Robert, who sold it in 1731 to Wm. Sackett, and it afterwards became the Episcopal parsonage. (See the history of these premises, pp. 40, 45, 49, 75, 250.) Mr. Titus proved a most valuable citizen, and so vigorous were his faculties at fourscore years, that he was then chosen an elder of the Presbyterian church. He died Jan. 17, 1730. In the southwest corner of the ancient public burial ground at Newtown, stands a rude stone that marks his grave, bearing the simple inscription, Content Titus.

Many histories and genealogies, following Riker, state the Elizabeth Moore married Content Titus. [5] [6] [7] [8]

Osborne and Smith suggest that Riker based his statement on a land dispute in which Content Titus received a 1/5 share of the land inherited by the heirs of John Moore. From a careful analysis of chronology and available records, they suggest that Content Titus may have purchased Elizabeth's portion of her father's estate, either from her step-father Francis Doughty or from her husband William Osborne. [9]

1686 Content Titus was listed as a resident of Newtown, Long Island. [10]

1698 Content Titus was listed as an inhabitant of Newtown, Long Island with a family of 10 persons and 3 negros in a census taken in August. [11]

1694 Gritman reported that Samuel Moore, of Newtown, and Daniel Whitehead, of Jamaica, were executors of the last will and testament of William Osbourne. Jacob Ware who married Elizabeth Osbourne, the daughter of William Osbourne, late of Gravesend. [12] [13]
