Notes for William Doughty and Phebe Taylor

William Doughty (son of Elias Doughty and Sarah, his wife), was born at Flushing, Queens County, New York, about 1676; married at Flushing, Queens County, New York, about 1709, Phebe Taylor, born at Flushing, Queens County, New York (daughter of Henry Taylor of Flushing) about 1685. She died Jan. 10, 1714. He probably removed after her death to Jamaica, Queens County, New York, where we find a Justice of that name living 1719-1723.

1690/91 On 9 March, the birth register for the Quaker meeting of Flushing, New York reported Phebe Taylor, daughter of Henry and Sarah Taylor of flushing was born ye 9d 1mo 1690. [1]

1701 On 9 of month 5 (July), Patience Bullock, late of ye Island of Barbados married Nathaniel Field, of Newtown, Long Island, New York. Witnessed by William Doughty, and others. [2]

1709 On 3 October, John Talman of Flushing dated his will. Wife Mary to have use of my plantation at the bay side where I now live, about 100 acres, and the houses, till my son Peter comes of age; then she shall have half during her widowhood, with remainder to son Peter. Son John to have the plantation on the hills by paying his brother Benjamin, when of age, L50. To son James the plantation I bought of Powell Huff; James to pay his brother Joseph L70. To sons Benjamin & Joseph, and to my expected son the lots I bought in Bucks Co, Penn., with Wm. Laurence & others. Residue to daus. Mary, Elizabeth & Sarah Talman. Executor: son John and friend Samuel Haight, Sr. Witness: Wm. Laurence, John Embree & James Clement. Male died before 1709 Mar 15, 1709 Mar 15 will proved. [3]

1710 On 4d of month 10, William Doughty, son of William and Phebe Doughty, was born. [4]

1712 On 21d of month 9, Sarah Doughty, daughter of William and Phebe Doughty, was born. [5]

1714 "Phebel Doughty, wife of William Doughty of flushing dyed ye 10d ye 1 mo 1714." [6]

1716 The will of Dr Henry Taylor left items to grand son William Doughty, Jr, son of daughter Phebe, deceased. " In the name of God, Amen. I, Henry Taylor, of Flushing in Queens County, Chyrurgeon, being infirm in body. I leave to my wife Sarah the use of all my estate, houses and lands and monies due to me, I leave to my eldest son Joseph Taylor 20 shillings, and to my son Benjamin (£5), and all my wearing apparel. I leave to my granddaughter, Abigail, wife of Benjamin Woolsey, 20 shillings. I leave to my grandson, William Doughty, (£3) to buy him a saddle and bridle. I leave to my grandsons William Doughty Jr., son of my daughter Phebe, deceased, and William Marsh, Jr. son of my daughter, Sarah Marsh, all my houses, lands and tenements, situated in any part of the world, or the Province of New York. I leave one third of all my personal estate to my wife Sarah, and the rest to my daughter Sarah, wife of William Marsh, my grandson, William Doughty, my daughter Mary, wife of Francis Willett, of Rhode Island. I leave to my son Benjamin, all my right and interest to a certain tract of land in the township of Rye, in Westchester County, being part of what I lately puchased of William Lawrence, provided that he shall within six months, deliver to Richard Smith of Smithtown in Suffolk County a release and quit claim for my parcel of land and meadow at Uncachoge, in Meridian neck, in Suffolk County, which at any time did belong unto me. And he shall also give to my grandsons, William Doughty and William Marsh, a quit claim for all right in the farm whereon I now live in Flushing. I make my brother-in-law, John Palmer, of Westchester, and James Clement Jr. of Flushing, executors. Witnesses, Thomas Willett, John Rodman Jr. and Robert Pines. 1718 Jul 05 Codicil. Confirms the foregoing will and adds a few directions concerning personal property. Mentions the Ferry Boat which he gives to his wife. Witnesses, Charles Doughty, Mary Almy, Elizabeth Doughty, Joseph Ludlam. 1719 May 19 Proved before Peter Schuyler, President of Council." [7]

1719-23 William Doughty was apparently a Justice at Jamaica, Queens County, New York 1719-1723 where he removed.

William Doughty was witness to several deeds in Bucks County, Pennsylvania:

1719 Jun 11 Grantor: Joseph Thorne of Flushing, Queens County, New York, yeoman. Grantee: Thomas Stevenson of Bensalem, yeoman. Transaction: 60# for 500 acres, part of the moiety of 5,000 acres conveyed to William Lawrence, John Talman, Samuel Thorne, Joseph Thorne and Benjamin Field by William Biles, deceased, by deed dated 1698 3rd 01. Said 5,000 acres was the original land of Thomas Hudson and sold to these men, each man having a moiety of 1,000 acres, by power of attorney from Thomas Hudson. Made 1719 Jun 11. Witness: Will[iam] Doughty, John Talman, Samuel Thorne, Jno. Stevenson. Ackn 1720 Jun 03. JP: Joseph Kirkbride. [8]

1719 Jun 11 Grantor: John Talman of Flushing, Queens County, New York, yeoman. Grantee: Thomas Stevenson of Bensalem, Bucks Co, yeoman. Transaction: #200 for 1000 acres derived from the right of John Talman's father, John Talman, deceased. Also, 500 acres which the seller purchased from Samuel Thorne, Jr. by deed dated 1718 May 13 which Samuel Thorne had the right of his father and was part of 5,000 acres granted to William Lawrance, John Talman, Samuel Thorne, Joseph Thorne and Benjamin Field jointly from William Biles of Bucks Co, deceased, by deed dated 1698 Mar 01. The said 5,000 acres was originally purchased by Thomas Hudson and was sold by William Biles by power of attorney from Thomas Hudson. Made 1719 Jun 11. Witness: W[illia]m Doughty, Jno. Stevenson, Samuel Thorne, Joseph Kirkbride, Thomas Thorne. [9]

1719 Jun 11 Grantor: William Lawrence of Flushing, Queens County, New York, gentleman. Grantee: Thomas Stevenson of Bensalem, Bucks Co. yeoman. Transaction: 57.10.0 for 500 acres in Bucks Co, being the moiety of Lawrance's share of 5,000 acres [same land as described in above entry] Made 1719 Jun 11. Witness: William Doughty, Jno. Stevenson, Samuel Thorne, John Talman. Ackn. 1720 4th 04 by Samuel Thorne and Thomas Stevenson by personal appearance before JP Joseph Kirkbride. [10]

Abstracts from the PA Gazette 1748-1755. 1749 William Doughty, late of Phila, blacksmith, leased ground on Pool's Hill in the Northern Liberties (leased of Benj'n Mifflin for 7y) to Alex'r Lang, late of Phila, dec'd, lease to be sold by Cayningham & Gardner, execs (7 Mar) P42.

1750 "In the name of God, Amen, I, Elizabeth Ford, of Flushing, being sick. I leave to my son, Benjamin 20 shillings. I leave to my son-in-law, Caleb Griffin, 2/3 of my estate. All the rest I leave to my two daughters, Elizabeth Savage and Sarah Griffin. Executor: Caleb Griffin. Witness: William Doughty, William Griffin, Amea Griffin. Proved: 1750 Jul 28." [11]

The children's births are entered on the records of the 20th Street New York Friends Meeting. 1710-1712 The birth register for the Quaker meeting of Flushing, New York reported "Sarah Taylor, daughter of Henry and Sarah Taylor of flushing was born 12d 3m 1688. Phebe Taylor born ye 9d 1mo 1690. William Doughty son of William and Phebe Doughty was born 1d 10mo 1710. Sarah doughty was born ye 21d 9mo 1712.
