Notes for John Webster and Emett Welle

1509/10 John, eldest son of William Webster, "took up his freedom in Syston in 1509/10, when he would probably be in his early twenties." [1]

1524 William Webster "paid the Lay Subsidy in Syston in 1524." [2]

c 1535 "John became tenant, under the priory of Ulverscroft, co. Leicester, of a farm in Cossington about 1535, and in 1544 he went to law about it. His opponents, Thomas Chamberlain and William Chamberlain, were probably his friends, who joined him in a collusive suit to secure his title. It is significant that William and Richard Chamberlain were witnesses to the will of Emett Webster, John's widow." [3] The case was heard in the Court of Augmentations: John Webster v Thomas and William Chambreleyn concerning land in Cossington, Leicestershire. Bill and answer. Date 1536-1544. [4]

1540 William Webster's "name appears on the the Musters there [in Syston] in 1540." [5]

1545-1549 John Webster's "name appears twice in the churchwardens' accounts: in 1545 he paid rent for a piece of land (a butte) and in 1549 he held the office of churchwarden." [6]

1554 "John bought the house and farm where he had lived for some years." [7]

1558 "Emott Webster of Cossington made her will 20th August. [8]

She bequeathed her soul to our Lord Jesus Christ, our Lady saint Mary and all the blessed company of Heaven and her body to be buried in the church yard at Cossinton near her husband. She left 4 d. to the mother church at Lincoln and 4 d. ot the altar of Cossington. She laid an annual charge of r s. upon her house to provide dirge and mass for the souls of her husband and herself, and 3 s. 8 d. to be divided amongst the poor folks of Cossington, and a further 20 d. a year for the maintenance of the church of Cossington. She bequeathed all of her linen to her daughters Ales and elen she left the chair and a half share with her son John of a matress, a bolster, a coverlet her clothes and her small trifles in her coffer. She also left her son John two beds. To her daughter agnes Storer she left 6 stone of flax, to Robert Storer a ewe, to her godson lawrence Storer a ewe lamb. She bequeathe a bushel of rye to John Bingylbye and a flaxen sheet and a towel to her godson William Pollard. The residue of her estate she left to her son John. She appointed her son John Webster and her brother William Welle, Vicar of Ashby, her executors and gave them half a stone of rye for their labour, and her son William Webster she made overseer of her will and gave him 5 wethers for his pains. Witnesses: Willm Chamberlayne, Richard Chamberlayn, with others more.
