Michael Ritner had a daughter married to Peter Swanger, of Cumberland County. Michael's family was described in a biosketch of his son, Joseph Ritner, who was governor of Pennsylvania. [1]

1787 Catharine Ridner, daughter of Michael Ridner and Mary Catherine Harfner, was born on April 4. She was baptized on May 7 with sponsor Mary Catherine Ridner at St Mary's Church in Lancaster City, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [2]

1817 Peter Swanger was taxed for 2 cows in South Middleton, Cumberland County. [3]

1820 Peter Swanger, laborer, was taxed for 2 cows in South Middleton, Cumberland County. [4]

1820 Peter Swanger lived in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. [5] [6]

1840 Peter Swanger lived in South Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania in a household with males: 1 (15 thru 19), 1 (20 thru 29), and 1 (50 thru 59); and females: 1 (10 thru 14), 1 (15 thru 19), 1 (20 thru 29), and 1 (50 thru 59). [7]

1846 Administration letters were issued on May 27, to Jacob Ritter for the estate of Peter Swanger of South Middleton. C. Barnitz and Elizabeth Speck posted bond. [8] [9]

1860 Catharine S Swanger (age 73, born in Pennsylvania) lived in North Middleton Twp, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, in a household with Christian Swanger (age 38), Elizabeth Swanger (age 36), Catharine Swanger (age 10), Joseph Swanger (age 8), Mary Swanger (age 7), Mary Green (age 17), and William Green (age 13). [10]

1861 Letters of administration were issued to Christian Swanger, on December 7, for the estate of Catharine Swanger, of North Middleton. [11] [12]

1862 Catharine Swanger was buried on February 25, at age 74, recorded in the German Reformed Church records, Carlisle, Cumberland County. [13]

A biosketch of son-in-law John Rutz reports [14]:

John Rutz ... for many years a prominent and respected citizen of North Middleton township, was born Feb. 13, 1827, and in 1851 come to this country from Germany, arriving March 3d. Locating in Cumberland county, Pa., he took a position as miller with William M. Henderson, in Carlisle, for whom he continued to work twenty years, and on leaving the mill he took up farming, settling upon the Cave Hill farm, where he passed the remainder of his days. ... He married Susan Swanger, born February 27, 1830, near Henderson's Mill, and whose mother was a sister of Governor Ritner.

Research Notes:

1850 Peter Swanger (age 62) lived with Catherina (age 60), Mary (6), and Elizabeth (5) in Franklin, Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania. [15]

1875 Christian Swonger died on December 15 and was buried at Old Graveyard, Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. [16] The Parish Register of First Evangelical Lutheran Church, Carlisle, Pa., 1788-1923 reports that Christian was born on February 25, 1822 and died on December 14. [17]

1913 Mrs Katharine Martin, daughter of Christian Swonger and Elizabeth Sloop, died on July 21, 1913, at age 62, in Middlesex, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Mrs Katharine Martin was born on April 1, 1851, in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. [18]

1936 Joseph R Swonger, son of Christian Swinger and Elizabeth Sloope, spouse of Martha Parter, died on January 15, 1936, at age 83, in Carlisle, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania. Joseph R Swonger was born on October 7, 1852, in Middures Twpt Cumb County, Pennsylvania. [19]
