Notes for Richard Moody and Anne

1556-1558 Thomas Modye, parson of Moulton, sued Richard his brother concerning exclusion from complainant's parsonage, which defendant has been permitted to inhabit at will. Suffolk. [1]

1558-1574 Richard Modye sued Sir Clement Higham kt and others concerning property in Moulton, Suffolk, 1558-1579. [2]

1572/73 Richard Moody of Moulton wrote wills dated January 14 [3] and February 2. [4] The second will states,

In the name of God amen the Seconde daye of Februarie in the yere of our Lorde godd a thowsounde fyve hundred Seaventie and twoe I Richarde Modye of moulton in the countie of Suff' yeoman and within the dioces of Caunterburie beinge of good minde and perfecte remembraunce thanks be to almightie god do make and ordaine this my presente Testamente conteyninge herein my laste will revokeinge and disadnullinge all other mannor of former wills heretofore made by me either by worde or writinge. And firste I commende my Sowle into thandes of almightie god trustinge by the deathe and passionne of my readeamer Jhus Christe to be one of the ellecte and chosenne at the latter daye. And toucheinge my boddye I committe it to the yearthe and to be buried in the Churche of Moulton aforesaide. I geve towardes the reparacouns of the saide churche vjs viijd. I geve vnto euerye poore howshoulder in Moulton one Busshell of rye. I geve to the poore people of Gaseleye vjs viijd to the poore people of Dalham vjs viijd to the poore of Kentforde vjs viijd, to the poore of Newmarkette xs. And towchinge my landes and tennements I geve vnto Anne my wife my Capitall messuage or Tennemente wherein I nowe dwell in with all and singuler thapputtenances wch I late bowghte and purchaized of George Tailor and Thomas Harveye executors to the laste will and Testamente of Roger Fryette deceased. To haue and to houlde the saide messuage and Tenemente withall and singuler thappurtenances vnto the saide Anne my wife in lewe and recompence of her dowre or thirde of all my other landes and Tennements dureinge her naturall life, the remainder thereof vnto George Modye my Sonne and his heires foreuer. I geve vnto the saide George My Sonne all my other Landes Tennements and heredittaments whatsoeuer Sette lienge and beinge within the towne and feelds of Moulton and Kenteforde. To haue and to houlde all the saide landes Tennements and heredittaments wthall and singuler thappurtenances vnto the saide George my Sonne and to the heires of his bodye lawfullye begottonne. And for defaulte of suche yssewe of his boddeye lawfullye begottonne the remainder therof vnto John Modye my thirde Sonne and to the heires of his boddeye lawefullye begottonne. And for defaulte of suche yssue the remainder thereof vnto Edmounde Modye my Sonne and to his heires foreuer. Item I geve vnto the saide Edmounde Modye my Sonne all my landes tennements and heredittaments bothe free and coppiehouldes custommarie beinge in Gaseleye which I late purchaihed and bowghte of xpofer Birde and Beatrixe Birde To haue and to hold all the saide Landes Tennements and heredittaments vnto the saide Edmunde and to the heires of his bodye lawfullye begottonne. And for defalte of suche yssue the remainder therof vnto John Modye and to his heires foreuer. I geve vndo the saide Edmunde my Sonne one Lease of Tenne acres of lande wch I houlde of the demyse and graunte of M'ris Higham widdowe. Item I geve vnto the saide Edmounde my Sonne xiiijxx sheepe called wethers nowe going in the common and feilde of Gaseleye and toucheinge my other goodes I geve vnto Anne my wife all my howseholde stuffe and ympleaments of howsehoulde vppon condicon that the saide Anne my wife shall geve and paye vnto George my Sonne when he shall accomplisshe thaige of xxj yeres xx li. I geve my saide wife thone halfe of my Bullocks halfe my horses halfe my carts and plowes with the furnyture Item I geve vnto the saide Anne all the Corne nowe groweinge vppon anye of the saide Landes late Frietts withall the tilthe of the same Landes wch are to be sown wt barleye and xltie Combes of Barleye to sowe the same lande wt. Item I geve vnto my saide wife xxtie combes of malte and xxtie Combes of rye. Itm I geve vnto George my Sonne thother halfe of all my horses and bullocks Carts and plowes wt theire furniture to be evenlye deuided betwene my wife and hym. Item I geue unto the saide George my Sonne all the residue of my Corne growinge of all my other landes in Moulton with the tilthe and sufficiente Seede Barleye to sowe the saide landes not bequeathed nor geven to my wife. Item I geve vnto Edmonde my Sonne all my Corne nowe growinge vppon anye of my Landes in Gaseleye. Item I geve vnto Anne my wife and George my Sonne all my Sheepe caled wethers goinge wtin the towne and feildes of moulton to be evenlye deuided betwene them. Item I geue vnto the saide George my Sonne one Lease of a Sheepes grounde in Moulton wch I houlde of the demyse of John Trace gentleman. Item I geve vnto John my Sonne bothe my leases of Canham wch I bowghte of Richarde Rampleye when he shall accomplisshe theage of xxj yeres. Item I geve vnto the saide John all my Sheepe goinge vppon the saide sheepes course there by vertewe of the saide lease. Item I will that my gossoppe xpofer Founstone shall have the vse and profitte of my saide lease and sheepe vntill the saide John shall accomplisshe his saide full aige of xxj yeres vppon condicon that he shall putt in good assuraunce to mine executors for the redeliuerye of the saide sheepe vnto the saide John at the saide aige or ells the price of them as theye shalbe valued. And furder vppon condicon that the saide xpofer his executor or assighnes shall bringe vppe the side John in goode learninge vntill he shall accomplisshe his saide aige. Item I will that my freinde Mr Taylor shall have percewe and take thissues revenues and proffitts of all my Landes and Tennts geven vnto Georte my Sonne vntill he shall accomplisshe his saide aige vppon condicon that he shall keepe bringe vpp hym godleye and vertuousley and shall finde maineteyne and keepe the saide Landes and Tennements withall and singuler thappurtenances in good and sufficiente reperatonns and shall make accompte to the saide George to his heires or assignes of theissewes and proffitts of all the saide Landes and Tennements at his saide aige deductinge his reasonable expences and chardge. Item I geve vnto euerye one of my god childrene xs. Item I geve vnto Elizabeth Joyner Tenne Combes of rye and Tenne Combes of mawlte. Item I geve vnto Richarde Lamberte one Combe of rye. Item i geve vnto Roberte Wilsonne my servaunte my worste coate hose and doublette. Item I geve vnto Thomas Archer one Combe of wheate Item I geue vnto John Modye of Cambridge ij stone of wooll one of blacke and one of white. Item I will that my freinde Thomas Smythe of Assheley shall have receave and take thissewe and proffitts of all the landes and Tennements gevenne vnto Edmonnde my Sonne of his stock vntill he shall accomplisshe the aige of xxj yeares findinge and kepinge vpp the saide Edmounde in good learninge and alsoe to mainteyne and keepe the saide landes tennements with all and singuler the appyrtenances in all mannor of good reperaconns The reste of my goodes not before gevenne or bequeathed I will shalbe evenlie divided amongs my fowre dawghters at the daye of their marriadges vz Grace Anne Margarette and Marye. Item I geue and bequeathe to the childe that Anne my wife is now wtall xlli. And if it shall fortune the saide childe to dye that then the saide xlli shalbe evenley deuided amonge the residue of my dawghters. And I ordaigne and make my Executors my trustie friendes Thomas Smithe of Assheleye and Roger Tompson of Clare desireinge them to see this my laste will and Testamente performed accordinge to my true meaninge and I geve to either of them for their paines vli And I ordaigne and make Superuisor of this my saide laste will my trustie and vereye freinde Mr Stuttevile of Dalham. And I geve hym for his paines my Silver Saulte and my baye Coulte. Theis beinge witnesses Richarde Lamberte Richarde Grene and me xpofer Funstone prouided and my will is that if Anne my Wife have the vse of all the legacies and guifts of my fowre dawghters vntill theye be married that she shall have the saide legacies puttinge in sufficiente Suretye to my executors to repaye the same accordingleye.

In this yere the kyng folowyng of his hauke, lept over a diche beside Hychyn, with a polle and the polle brake, so that if one Edmond Mody, a foteman, had not lept into the water, and lift up his hed, whiche was fast in the clay, he had bene drouned: but God of his goodnes preserved him.

1538 A payment to an Edmund Mody, footman, was listed in the payments of Henry VIII on Lady Day. [6]

A contemporary Edmund Mody/Modye/Mowdy in the service of Henry VIII was captain of the bulwark (1534) and later bailiff at Dover (1543-1552) and a member of Parliament (1545). This Edmund Modye named his wife Margery and a son Christoper in his will. [10]
