1584 "William Hulcocke [was] bur. 31st August" in Cossington. Leicestershire, England. [3]

1584/85 "Richard Smith and Agnes Hulcocke" were married "19th January" in Cossington. Leicestershire, England. [4]

1585 "Agnes Smith, daughter of Richard Smith, [was] chr. 29th August" in Cossington. Leicestershire, England. [5]

1597/98 "Thomas Bacon of Stanton under Bardon, husbandman, and Grace, his wife, one of the daughters of John Wyled of East Leake in Nottinghamshire, husbandman, deceased" sold to "Richard Smythe of Cossington, husbandman" on March 10 "the messuage called the Grange situated in Cossington in the occupation of Richard Smythe, 1 yardland of arable situated on the parish field of Cossington occupied by Richard Smyth. Term: Forever. Consideration: £140.0.0." [6]

1600/01 "Agreement to levy a fine" by "Thomas Bacon of Stanton under Bardon" to "Richard Smithe of Cossington" on March 8 "in consideration of £140 paid by" Richard to Thomas, "of which £80 is to be paid before the feast of Phillip to be paid at the house of Thomas Bacon and £60 before the feast of St. Martin. This is over and above the debts and demands made by Thomas Bacon to Richard Smithe." Thomas "sells to" Richard "the messuage and yardland of arable land situated in Cossington in the occupation of" Richard "with warranty." Richard "to deliver to" Thomas "2 kine before May Day." Thomas "and son Edward Bacon at the next assizes to levy a fine of the property to" Richard. [7]

1601/02 Bond "Thomas Bacon of Staunton, co. Leicester, husbandman" on March 10 to Richard Smyth of Cossington, husbandman. Condition: Thomas Bacon and Grace, his wife, one of the daughters of John Wylde the elder, late of East Leake, co. Nottingham, husbandman, deceased, in a deed of even date for a certain consideration enfeoffed to (ii) a messuage called the Graunge situated in Cossington in the occupation of Richard Smythe. Also one yardland of arable meadow and pasture situated in the fields of Cossington occupied by Richard Smythe. The above property therefore to continue to remain in the hands of Richard Smythe for ever. Penal sum: £200.0.0." [8]

1602 "Fine (Right-hand)" to "Richard Smythe, plaintiff" from "Thomas Bacon and Grace, his wife, deforciants" on April 19 "one messuage, 30 acres of land, 10 acres of meadow land, 20 acres of pasture, 10 acres of gorse and heath and rights of pasture with the appurtenances in Cossington. Consideration: £120.0.0." [9]

1608 Bargain and Sale from "Allexander Cotes of Knighton, yeoman," to "Mathewe Babington of Cossington, Esq." on May 13 "the messuage with the appurtenances and one toft or close called Belles Close and two small tofts or crofts and 2½ yardlands of arable meadow situated in Cossington lately in the occupation of William Chamberlain and now in the tenure of Richard Smyth and William Middleton. Term: Forever. Certain conditions. Consideration: £400.0.0." [10]

1609 In an exchange of property, "Mathewe Babington of Cossington, Esq." conveyed to "Richard Smyth of Cossington, yeoman" on November 1 "the messuage situated in Cossington in the occupation of William Chamberlyn. Also 2 small tofts adjoining the messuage. The above was lately purchased by Mathewe from Alexander Coates. Also the little croft situated in Cossington in the occupation of Edward Houghton previously of Raph Whalley deceased. Also 3 selions or leyes of pasture situated in the Little Ryefield in Cossington with the land of John Webster on the west, another selion in Little Ryefield, with the land of John Webster on the north and south. Also a croft of pasture with the appurtenances in Cossington in the tenure of Robert Perkins with the property of John Webster on the west. Term: Forever In Exchange for the messuage situated in Cossington called the Grannge in the occupation of Richard Smyth. Also the close situated on the backside adjoining the messuage. Term: Forever." [11]

1609 In a marriage settlement for his daughter Agnes Smyth to John Webster, "Richard Smyth of Cossington, yeoman" conveyed on November 2nd to "Ralph Weldon of Cossington, gent, and John Oswyn of Cossington" [12]

the messuage situated in Cossington in the tenure of William Chamberlyn and his assigns, and all the property in Cossington that used to be in the occupation of Edward Houghton with the land of Ralph Whalley deceased lying on the west. Also 3 selions of pasture situated in the field called Little Ryefield with the land of John Webster lying on the north. Also a croft with pasture in Cossington lately in the tenure of Robert Perkin or his assigns with the land of John Webster on the west. [Richard] obtained the above property from Matthew Babington. Also the virgate of land with the appurtenances situated in Cossington in the tenure of [Richard], originally part of the Grange. Term: [Ralph Weldon of Cossington, gent, and John Oswyn of Cossington] to hold to the use of [Richard] during his life and then to the use of John Webster and Agnes and their heirs forever. Clause of Warranty. Consideration: The marriage of John Webster, yeoman and Agnes Smyth the daughter of Richard.

1609 "John Webster and Agnes Smith" were married "7th November" in Cossington, Leicestershire, England. [13]

1612 Richard Smyth wrote his will on April 26. [14]

Richard Smith bequeathed to the poor of four towns surrounding Cossington: Rothley is about 2 miles west of Cossington. Mountsorrel is about 2 miles north west of Cossington. Syston is about 2 miles south east of Cossington. Sileby is about a mile north of Cossington.

1580 In a feoffment dated 16th August, "John Smith of Wycomb, co. Leicester, husbandman" conveyed to "William Croxham of the same place" and "John Lowe of Somerby in Lincolnshire, husbandman" [17]

his messuage and four yard lands with their appurtenances situated in Wycomb and Chadwell in the occupation of [John Smith], Henry Sellers and Robert Barnes. All other property belonging to the above messuage. Term: Forever. To the use of [John Smith] and Johane his wife, for their life and then to Richard Smyth the eldest son, etc. Certain conditions. Considerations:

1581 In a gift dated 16th August, "John Smyth of Wyckham, co. Leicester, husbandman" granted to "William Broghton of Wyckham, weaver, and John Lowe of Gunbye, co. Lincoln, husbandman" [18]

two messuages, one cottage and four yardlands with their appurtenances situated in Wyckham and Caldewell in Leicestershire in the occupation of John Smythe, Henry Sellers and Robert Barnes. To the use of [John Smyth] and his wife Joan then to the use of Richard Smyth, his eldest son and his heirs. Various conditions regarding the sale of the land after [John Smyth]'s death, etc. Consideration: All [John Smyth]'s land shall pass intact to his heirs.

Wycomb and Chadwell are about 15 miles north east of Cossington.
