Notes for Peter Neff and Anna Good

c 1733-37 Peter Neff may have been born about this time, based on subsequent documents related to him achieving age 21. Peter was named as an heir to land in the will of his father dated 1754. Peter was not assigned a guardian by the Orphans Court after his father's death, as were his siblings. Peter first appeared on the tax list in 1758.

1755 Peter Neff was named as a son in the will of Henry Neff, of Lampeter Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Peter was to inherit Henry's land and plantation of 106 acres when he got married. [1] [2]

1758 Peter Neff was taxed with 100 acres in Lampeter Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Widow Neff was not taxed. Peter had not been listed in 1757 or prior to this time, although his widowed mother was listed in 1756 and 1757. [3]

1763 Peter Neaph was taxed with 150 acres in Lampeter Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [4] There were no tax lists for 1764-1768. The name Neff does not appear in Lampeter Twp in 1769 or 1770.

1763 Peter Neff purchased a 260 acre tract in Newberry Twp, York County, Pennsylvania from Joseph Gibson on November 19. This transaction was recounted when the tract was sold by Peter's son John in 1790. [5]

1765 Peter Naef was taxed in Newberry Twp, York County. [6]

1767 Peter Knafe was taxed in Newberry Twp, York County. [7]

1767 The will of Peter Neph, of Newberry Township, York County, was dated November 20, 1767, and was proved on January 16, 1768. Wife Anna Neff and friend Jacob Neff [likely Peter's uncle] of Strousburg Twp, Lancaster County were named executors. Son John was to inherit the plantation when he reached age 21. Daughters Elizabeth and Ann would inherit if John were to die [will abstracts that name only daughter Elizabeth are in error]. Witnessed by Robert Mills Junior, Goodlib Fisher, and Abraham Neff. [8] [9]

1790 John Neff sold a 260 acre tract in Newberry Twp, York County, Pennsylvania to William Hamersley on May 17. John Neff had inherited the land by the will of his father Peter Neff, dated 1767. [10]

1792 A deed was returned on June 4, for the sale of the estate of Peter Neff to John Neff. The land was in Newberry Township, York County. Ann, wife of Jacob Meyer of Manheim Twp. Lancaster County, was named as the widow of Peter Neff. Christian Stoner, et al, and Elizabeth his wife of Newbury Twp, Christian Mayer and Ann his wife of Manheim Twp, in the county of Lancaster, which the said Elizabeth and Ann are the daughters of Peter Neff late of Newberry Twp in the county of York deceased, of the one part, and Jacob Mayer and Ann his wife of Manheim Twp in Lancaster is the widow and relict of Peter Neff deceased of the second part, and John Neff of Newberry Twp is the son of Peter Neff deceased of the third party, whereas Peter died and left the 266 acres to Ann his widow and three children, John Neff, Elizabeth, the wife of Christian Stoner, and Ann, the wife of Christian Mayer, dated 15 May 1790, recorded 17 May 1790, [Robert Hammersly, Esq., is one of the Justices of the Court of Common Pleas of York County] All of the wives are examined. Several researchers report Peter's wife to be Anna Good. Anna Good, daughter of Samuel Good [19], reportedly married a Neff [we seek documentation for the marriage of Anna Guth to Neff]. That is a possible link for Anna, the wife of Peter Neff, to be the same person as Anna Good, the daughter of Samuel. [20] We seek evidence that Samuel Good lived in Lampeter Twp during the time period that Peter Neff married Anna. Tax records name Henry Good of Lampeter Twp.

1757 Henry Good was taxed in Lampeter Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was not on the Lampeter tax list in prior years. [21]

1803 The will of Henry Good, of Conestoga Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. The will instructed that the plantation in Lampeter Twp be sold and named 17 children of deceased sister Ann spouse of Jacob Huber and deceased sister Veronica spouse of Ulrich Huber. [34]

The 1792 deed shows that Ann married both Peter Neff and Jacob Meyer and that her daughter, Ann married Christian Mayer. Our notes for Christian Mayer, husband of daughter Ann, show his father as Jacob Meyer and mother as Anna. There is uncertainty about the identity of Anna, mother of Christian Mayer.

Peter Nease of Shrewsberry Twp [on the southern border of York County, while Newberry Twp is on the northern border], a different person from Peter Neff of Newberry Twp, died about this time.

1769 Anna Maria Aull, late Anna Maria Neas, administrator for Peter Neas of Shrewsbury Twp, York County, presented the intestate account, on March 21, to the York County Orphans' Court with balance £33.7.11. [35]
