Obituary for Anna Moyer
The Peabody Gazette-Herald, Peabody, Kansas, December 8, 1904. [24]

Anna Moyer Bechtel was born in Lancaster County, Peftn., June 3d, 1819, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. C. W. Nusbaum, Peabody, Kan., Nov. 30, 1904, her age being 85 years, 5 months and 27 days. In 1826 she removed with her parents to Ashland, Ohio, where in April, 1837 she was married to Jacob Bechtel. They continued to reside there for thirteen years. In May 1850, they removed to Elkhart county, Ind., and in 1884 came to Peabody where she has since resided. To her ten children were born, six of whom are still living. She has had thirty-seven grandchildren, thirty still living; and thirty-seven great grandchildren, of whom thirty-five are now living. Her descendants therefore, have numbered eighty-four of whom seventy-one are living. She was converted in 1838 and united with the Evangelical church of which communion she was a faithful member at the time of her death. For sixty-six years she has experienced the joys and borne gladly the burdens of the christian. Her home was like that of the Shumanite woman, ever open for the hospitable reception of the messengers of God's truth. The itinerant preacher found in her home the restful, sympathetic companionship that the Savior found at Bethany. Grandma's religious life was of a very spiritual type. Her optimistic faith was an inspiration, her testimony had the clarion ring of victory and her prayers took firm hold of the very horns of the altar, her very presence in the house of God proved an uplift to the congregation and an inspiration to the preacher. She was versatile on many subjects but religious themes were her delight. In her last days she continually praised God and pronounced blessings on her children. Surely a sainted woman has left this familiar body and gone to be with Him.

The funeral services were held in the Methodist church on last Friday afternoon at two o'clock and were conducted by Revi Woodward. Rev. Cyrus Nusbaum came from Ottawa to attend the funeral and preach the sermon. Also by request he sang a solo. Her pastor, Rev. Huscherof the Evangelical church, offered prayer and the large Methodist choir furnished the music, Miss Reitha Hanson presiding at the organ instead of Mrs. Nusbaum. There was a great profusion of beautiful flowers, and the large church was filled with the sorrowing friends of the deceased. She was laid at rest in Prairie Lawn cemetery, beside the remains of her husband, who died a number of years ago.

Mrs. Bechtel's children living here are J. M. Bechtel, - Mrs. C. W. Nusbaum and Mrs. Levi Hoover, and Mrs. Geo. Hoover was here from St Joseph, Mo., having returned on Sunday before her mother's death.

1922 Elizabeth Nusbaum, daughter of Jacob Bechtel (born Berks County) and Anna Moyer (born Lancaster County) died in Meridian, Ada, Idaho on 21 December, 1922. Elizabeth was buried in Peabody, Kansas. [25]

A biosketch reports [26]:

Jacob Bechtel. - Among the prominent farmers of Harrison tp. Mr. Bechtel ranks with the leading. He was born in Lancaster county. Pa., May 30, 1815. His parents, Peter and Sophia Bechtel, were natives of Pa. In 1828 they moved to Ashland county, Ohio. There he was reared, and received his mite of knowledge of school books in the rude log hut. To give a description of this school building would not be out of place. It was a log structure, and not so very spacious within its massive walls. The roof was constructed by laying large logs on the top, and covering with dirt; the floor was formed of rough, unplaned puncheons, the seats of slabs; the room was heated by a large fire-place, which occupied the full width of one end of the room; the windows were made by removing a log from the side of the building, and greased paper was used for tlie window lights. What a hardship this would be to children of the present day ! In 1850 he came to this county, where he still resides, following the independent vocation of farming. April 20, 1837, he was married to Miss Anna Mover, daughter of John and Elizabeth Moyer, natives of Pennsylvania. They have had 10 children, 7 of whom are living, viz.: John, who married Sarah Hoover, now deceased; Elizabeth, now Mrs. C. W. Nusbaum; Abraham, who died while in the war, at Gallatin, Tenn., Feb. 19., 1863; David S., who married Sophia Otto; Barbara A., now Mrs. Geo. H. Hoover, in Kansas; Sophia, now Mrs. Levi Hoover, also in Kansas; Peter, Catharine, Joseph (deceased), and Caroline (deceased).

Mr. Bechtel was elected to the office of Tp. Trustee. He served in this capacity three years, then was elected County Commissioner. He served in that office till 1862, and in 18C5 he was re-elected and served six years. Mr. B. is a Republican, and is also a member of the Evangelical Church. His grandfather, Jacob Kinch, was a Hessian, and came across some time during the Revolution.
