Notes for Edward Mervyn and Margaret

1586 "Edward Marven of Wrabness" was a member of the 'Panel for the Hundred of Tendring" in the Easter 1586 Session Roll. [1]

1593 Twin sons John and Renold Marvin were baptized on 7 June and buried the next day at St Mary the Virgin, Great Bentley, Essex. "Anno 1593 … June John Marvin & Renold Marvin the Sons of Edw' Marvin were bapt the 7th day. John Marvin & Renold Marvin the Sons of Edw' Marvin were buried the 8th day." [2]

1594 Son Renold was baptized on 25 October at St Mary the Virgin, Great Bentley, Essex. "Anno Dm 1594 … October Renold Marvin Son of Edw' Marvin bapt ye 25th day." [3]

1596/7 Daughters Margaret and Elizabeth were baptized on 16 January and Margaret was buried by the end of January at St Mary the Virgin, Great Bentley, Essex. "Anno Dm 1596 … January … Margaret & Elizabeth Marvin daughters of Edw' Marvin bapt ye 16th day. Margaret Marvin daught of Edw' Mar[vin] buried [ye 28th] day." (In the image, the day is covered by a piece of paper from the next page of the register. The previous entry is dated 24 January.) [4] [5]

1599 On January 8, in the Epiphany session of the Session Rolls, "Recoganizances were recorded for "Edward Marvyn, Willaim Searfe, Daniel Howett, John Swellow and William Crowch of Great Bentley, yeoman, to give evidence against William Markant and John playse of the same for breaking the peace, and drawing and striking the constable and others in the churchyard with a rapier, upon the execution of the Justice's warrant. Taken before Edmund Pirton, esquire." [6]

1598 Edward Marven, a constable in Great Bentley, Essex, was attacked by two suspects on November 4. The "General Sessions of the Peace held at Chelmsford on 11 January 41 Eliz." recorded "that Daniel Hewett on 5 November 40 Elizabeth, being a constable of Great Bentley, by virtue of a warrant from Thomas Lord Darcy and Edward Pyrton esq., arreste William Markant gentleman and John Phayse yeoman of Bentley aforesaid, to find suficient security for their good behaviour. But Markant in the cemetery of the church of Great Bentley drew his rapier upon the said Hewett and also attacked Edward Marven, another constable, while Phayse struck the same Marven with a cudgel." [7]

1600 Son Mathew Marvin was baptized on 26 March at St Mary the Virgin, Great Bentley, Essex. "Anno Dni 1600 March Mathew Marvin sonn of Edward Marvin bapt the 26th day." [8]

1615 Edward Marvin wrote his will on November 13. [9]

1633 "Margaret the widow of Edward Meruen was buried the 28th of Maye" at St Mary the Virgin, Great Bentley, Essex. [10]

[5] John Insley Coddington, "Notes on the Ancestry of Reinold and Matthew Marvin," The American Genealogist 18 (1941), 1-13, at 11-12, Coddington suggests that Margaret was born "perhaps in 1589" and reports her burial as 28 Jan. 1595/6. He suggests a birth year of "perhaps in 1597" for Elizabeth, [AmericanAncestors].
