Notes for Martin Huber and Magdalena Musser

Martin Huber, son of Jacob Huber and grandson of Hans Huber, was born near New Holland, Pennsylvania and owned the south portion of the tract taken up by his grandfather. Martin lived there all his life. His will was recorded at Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and details at great length how his estate was to be divided. Martin Huber was a Mennonite farmer. [1] The identity of Martin Hover's wife is established by the 1760 deed cited below, which names Martin Hover's wife as Magdalena, daughter of Christian and Anna Musser and names Magdalena's mother Anna Musser as a daughter of Jacob Landes.

c1725 Martin Huber was born about 1725 in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [2] [3]

c 1729 Magdalena Moser was reportedly born about this time. [4]

1750 Son John was born on March 25 to Martin Huber by his first wife, whose name is not known.

1750 John Huber (50 acres) and Martin Huber (100 acres) were taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County. Perhaps they were brothers and sons of Jacob Huber and Anna. [5]

1750 Martin Huber was taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for 100 acres, 7 wheat, 2 horses, 2 cows, 5 sheep, 0 sows. John Huber was listed adjacent. [6]

1751 Martin Huber was taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [7]

1754 Martin and John Hover were taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [8]

1756 Martin Huber was a sponsor at the baptism of Joh Dietrich Obach, son of Dietrich and Barbara Obach. His wife was not a sponsor (perhaps she was deceased). [9] [10]

1756 Martin Huber was taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for 100 acres, 10 grains, 2 horses, 1 mares, 3 cows, 2 sheep. John Huber was listed adjacent. [11] [12] [13]

1757 Martin and John Huber were taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [14] [15]

1758 Martin Huver (200 acres by deed) and John Huver (150 acres by deed) were taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [16] [17] [18]

1758 Martin Huber witnessed a deed, dated February 15, describing the settlement of the estate of Christian Musser, father of Magdalena Musser. Pavey B Musser, Magdalena Musser, Anna Musser the widow, Anna Musser, and John Musser signed the deed with their marks. Magdalena was not described as the wife of Martin Huber in this deed. Martin Hoober was a witness to the deed. [19] [20]

1758-60 Martin Huber and Magdalene Musser were married, based on the 1758 and 1760 deeds cited here. [21]. Magdalena Moser, daughter of Christian Moser and Ann Landis, married Martin Hoover (1725-1785) of Earl Twp [22] [23] [24]

1759 Martin Huver and John Huver were taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [25] [26]

1760 Peter Musser and his wife Frena, John Musser and his wife Christina, Martin Hoover and his wife Magdalena, John Wade and his wife Anna, and Barbara Musser (sons and daughters of Christian Musser and his wife Anna) and which said Anna the wife of Christian Musser was one of the daughters and heirs of Jacob Landis, late of Lancaster County, deeded their part of the estate to Benjamin Landis. Jacob Landis died intestate with issue Benjamin Landis, Barbara the wife of Theodorus Buckwalter and Anna Tinckey (deceased), late the wife of Christian Musser, deceased. On the decease of Jacob Landis, Christian Musser became entitled to one fourth equal share of the estate. When Christian Musser died, that share descended to his heirs, who are the first parties to this deed. Dated April 4 [date assumed to be the same as the prior deed in the book]. [27]

1761 Martin Hoover returned a survey, dated January 29, made by Samuel Lightfoot, for a tract that was assigned to him by his father, Jacob Hoover. The land had been assigned to Jacob Hoover by Peter Summy. The original warrant was to Thomas McCann on March 6, 1737 for 200 acres adjoining lands of Hans Musselman and John Hoover and John Eby and Thomas Small in Earle Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. 1763 Martin Hoover corrected a patent, on April 19, for 159 acres in Earle Twp, Lancaster County, recorded in book A, dated April 22, 1761, to add 5 acres, returned June 7, 1763. [31] [32] [33] [34]

1769 Martin Hoober was taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania for 200 acres, 90 cultivated, 4 horses, 4 cattle, 16 sheep, 50 acres old rights, 150 acres new rights. [35] [36]

1771 Martin Hober was taxed 1.15.0 for 200 acres, 4 horses, and 4 cattle in Earl Twp, Lancaster County. Brother John was also taxed. [37]

1772 Martin Houver was taxed 1.10.0 for 200 acres (80 clear and 120 woodland), 4 horses, 10 sheep, and 4 cattle in Earl Twp, Lancaster County. Brother John was also taxed. [38] [39]

1773 Martin Huver was taxed 1.5.0 for 200 acres (80 clear and 120 woodland), 4 horses, and 3 cattle in Earl Twp, Lancaster County. Brother John was also taxed. [40] [41]

1779 Martin Hoover was taxed for 230 acres and a different Martin Huber was taxed for 100 acres in Earl Twp, Lancaster County. [42] [43] Another listing named Martin Hoover Sen'r with 160 acres and Martin Hoover (105 acres). [44] Perhaps Martin Hoover senior was the listing with more acreage.

1781 Martin Huber Senior was taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County. [45]

1782 Martin Huber Senior, and nephew Martin and son Jacob were taxed in Earl Twp, Lancaster County. [46]

1783 Martin Huber was taxed for 200 acres, 3 horses, 4 cattle, and 3 sheep in Earl Twp, Lancaster County. Martin Huber Jr was taxed for 120 acres, 3 horses, 2 cattle, and 6 sheep. [47]

1784 Martin Huber, perhaps this one, and many other Lancaster County residents signed a petition about enlarging the market in Philadelphia. [48]

1785 Martin Huber, of Earl Twp, perhaps this one, purchased land from the heirs of Joseph Grove on February 8. [49]

1785 Martin Hoover dated his will on April 19 in Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, with probate on May 9. Wife Magdalena Hoover. Children: John, Mary wife of Henry Weaver Jr, Ann wife of Christian Bowman, sons Christian, Jacob, Joseph, David, and daughter Madline. Executors Jacob and Joseph Hoover. His oldest son John had already "got considerable", so 250 pounds was to be divided among the other seven children. He directed that his plantation of 206 acres should be divided between his sons Joseph and Jacob. One tract of 103 acres valued at 715 pounds was granted to son Joseph and the other tract of 103 acres valued at 835 pounds was granted to son Jacob Hoover. 1785 Martin Huber died on April 21 and was buried at Groffdale Mennonite Brick Church Cemetery, Leola, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Martin Huber was born in 1725. [66] [67] [68] [69]

1785 "Huber Martins place" was listed on the tax record with 200 acres, 2 horses, and 2 cattle. A separate listing for "Huber, Martin" recorded 225 acres, 3 horses, and 3 cattle. [70]

1787 Michael Martin, Jacob Sumy [Summy], Christian Meyer [Myar], John Sentzenig, and Christian Musselman valued the estate of Martin Huber. They divided the estate of Martin Huber estate between sons Joseph and Jacob Hoover in a deed dated March 3. [71]

1790 Jacob Huber, Joseph, David, and John Jr Huber, perhaps some among these are sons of Martin Huber, had adjacent listings in the census for Earl Twp, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. [72]

1796 Magdalene [Musser Hoover] died on September 29, 1796. [73] [74] [75] [76]

Some researchers name son John as a son of Magdalene. Other researchers have suggested that Martin Huber had a first marriage and had child John and then married Magdalene, who died Sept 23, 1796. [87] The documents cited in these notes are consistent with this second possibility, but do not prove a second marriage.

1756 The baptism of Obach names Martin Huber as a sponsor, but names no wife of Martin. We seek further information about this baptism or a possible relationship between Martin Huber and the Obich family.

1758 A deed, witnessed by Martin Huber, names Magdalena Mosser as a daughter of Christian Musser, but does not mention her marriage to Martin Huber.

1760 A deed names Magdalena, spouse of Martin Huber, among heirs of Christian Mosser.

1770 Joseph Sherk wrote his will in Lancaster County. The will named son-in-law Martin Huber as an executor and mentioned land between Martin Huber and Joseph Sherk. "it is my will that the hundred acres of lying on Chestmut Hill and the thirty six acres land lying between my land and Martin Hoobers land … shall be sold to my son …" and "Joseph Shirk and Martin Huber my said executors and guardian of the said children for the use and benefit of the said children …". [88] Unfortunately, the will does not name the spouse of Martin Huber nor a child as an heir.

1785 The will of Martin Huber divided his estate among all children except John, who had already "got considerable" (perhaps from Joseph Sherk).
