Research Notes:

Undocumented sources. [33]

There are three Clayton men who purchased land in New Jersey at about the same time: John Clayton (died 1704)[34], Richard Clayton, and Matthew Clayton (died 1698). Other researchers have suggested that Richard Clayton [35] (born about 1626, died about 1677) and Margaret of Swarthmoor, Lancashire, England, might be the parents of Matthew Clayton [36].

We seek documentation to clarify the relationships among these Clayton families.

Joseph R. Klett reports [37]:

Sybilla was from Yorkshire, England, and came to America as an indentured servant of John and Alice Fullwood. She married Matthew Clayton. Her vital dates are not known at this time, and it is possible that she remarried Thomas Wyatt after her first husband's death in 1694.

See, also, the Norton parish index for Claiton. [38]

Several reserchers name Richard de Clayton (1625 - 1677) and Margaret Ellen Sanderson (1626 1662) as the parents of Matthew Clayton of Swarthmore, Lancashire, England.

1654 Matthew Clayton and Mary Turner were married at Norton, Derbyshire, England. [39]
