Notes for John Taylor and Sarah Quicksall

1722-23 John Taylor, son of Samuel and Anne Taylor, was born on 20 of month 9, near 3 o'clock in the morning. The year was not recorded, but he was listed between Thomas (born March 1721) and Anne (born 1724). [1] [2]

1748 A marriage license was granted to John Taylor and Sarah Quicksall, spinster, both of Chesterfield Twp, Burlington County on May 4. [3] [4] [5] [Photocopy] 1748 marriage license, John Taylor and Sarah Quicksall. They were married on May 10. [6]

1751 John Taylor advertised several pieces of land, apparently that of Thomas Clayton, mostly in Chester County, New Jersey.

1751 William Steward and Rebecca Taylor, daughter of Samuel and Anne Taylor, were married on 28 of month 9, at Chesterfield. Witnessed by John and Sarah Taylor and Jonathan Quicksall, and others. [7]

1754 A son was born to John and Sarah Taylor on November 8. [8]

1755 John and Sarah Taylor witnessed the will of uncle Robert Taylor, of Nottingham Twp, Burlington County. [9]

1755 Richard Brown of Nottingham and Sarah Taylor of Chesterfield were married on 15 of month 5, at Chesterfield Meeting, Burlington County, New Jersey. Witnessed by John Taylor and others. [10]

1756 A daughter was born to John Taylor on November 2. [11]

1757 John Taylor was the collector for Burlington Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey. [12]

1757 John Taylor was a bondsman for the will of Godfrey Beck of Nottingham Twp, Burlington County. [13]

1758 The name John Taylor was listed as a taxpayer in Nottingham Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey. [14]

1759 John Taylor erected the house to the east of the Yardville hotel, later owned in 1883 by John Beck. [15]

1760 Sarah Quicksall was named in the will of her father William Quicksall. Samuel Taylor Jr made the inventory for the estate. [16]

1762 The name John Taylor was listed twice as a taxpayer in Nottingham Twp, once with occupation weaver.

1762-64 John Taylor, perhaps this one, was surveyor for the highways in Nottingham Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey.

1763 John Taylor, perhaps this one, witnessed the will of David Silver of Nottingham Twp, Burlington County. [17]

1763 "To be sold: A House and Lot of land, pleasantly situated in the City of Burlington, adjoining on Pearl and Fourth streets, and on the River Delaware. The House is Brick, two Stories high, two Rooms on a Floor, and a good Brick Kitchen to the same, with an extra ordinary good Well of Water in the Yard. Any Person inclining to purchase the same, may know the Terms by applying to Rachel Verree, at the next Door, or to the Subscriber, in Bordentown. John Taylor." [18]

1765 John Taylor witnessed the will of Isaac Cowgill of Nottingham Twp, Burlington County. [19]

1765 John Taylor made inventory for the estate of Thomas Thorne of Nottingham Twp, Burlington County. Dated August 24. [20]

1766 "George and Amos Middleton reports they have made the necessary inquiry respecting the request of John Taylor and don't find anything to hinder his four sons, viz Daniel, John, Joel and Stacy coming under the care of Friends and they are accordin received members among us." Reported on 7th da, 9th mo (September), at the Chesterfield meeting. [21]. On 2nd da, 10th mo, "The women friends acquaint this meeting that they have taken Sarah Taylor, wife of John Taylor & her five daughters, viz Mary, Ann, Edith, Achsah and Sarah into membership." [22].

1767 John Taylor was a bondsman for the will of his father, Samuel Taylor, of Chesterfield, Burlington County. [23]

1768 Son-in-law John Taylor and daughter Sarah Taylor and grand-daughter Mary were named in the will of Sarah Quicksall. [24]

1768 A son was born to John Taylor on February 19. [25]

1767 John Taylor was overseer for the poor in Burlington County. [26]

1772 John Taylor was listed as a resident of Nottingham Twp with occupation weaver. [27]

1778 Joseph Decou and Achsah Taylor were married on 15th of month 10, at Chesterfield. John and Sarah Taylor were witnesses. [28]

1780 John Taylor and Phebe Rogers were married at the Burlington Meeting, Burlington County, New Jersey on November 9. Witnessed by John and Sarah Taylor, and others. [29]

1785 John Curtis, Jr and Sarah Taylor, daughter of John and Sarah, were married on 10 of month 3, at Chesterfield. Witnessed by John Taylor and Sarah and sons John, Joel, and Stacy and daughter Ann and many others. [30]

1785 John Taylor dated his will on November 17. John Taylor, farmer of Nottingham Twp, Burlington County, named wife, Sarah, ½ of my furniture and the money on bonds, and 12 pounds yearly, to be paid by my 4 sons, and I give her 30 acres on the northeast of my place, which join John Pearson and Isaac Ivens (perhaps Isaac Ivins, born 1725?), which is to be surveyed at the direction of my son, Stacy, and John Abbet, farmer. Son, Daniel, ½ of the rest of the plantation, on the north side. Son, John, my plantation in Chesterfield Twp, which I bought at Sheriff's sale, late the property of Joseph Harbert; also ½ of my marsh, lying between Crosswicks Creek and Delaware River. Son, Stacy, rest of plantation. Sons, Daniel and Stacy, each of them, are to pay £4 yearly to my wife, and to sons John & Joel, £2 to each yearly. Sons, Daniel, John and Joel, my livestock. Daughters, Mary, Ann, Edith, Acsah and Sarah, rest of my furniture. Executors-wife, Sarah, and my son, Stacy. Witnesses: Peter Welsh, Mary Rogers, Joseph Heritage. [31]

1786 John Taylor of Chesterfield Twp, Burlington County, perhaps this one, set free from bondage a negro wench named Jude Lamb (she appeared to need no support, was over age 21 and below age 35). [32]

1787 A codicil to the will was dated February 17, stating that son, Stacy, is to have the hay. Witnesses- Peter Welsh, Achsah De Cow. Proved May 17, 1787. [33]

1787 On March 15, the inventory, valued at £618.18.10, was made by John Abbott and Daniel Hendrickson. [34]

1787 In May, John Taylor, son of John Taylor, late of Burlington County, deceased, was ordered to appear before the Orphans' Court to answer questions about his knowledge of any codicils to the will of John Taylor. Witnessed by Joshua Wallace, Thomas Fenimore, and Israel Shreve. A complaint was made that codicils had not been properly exhibited. Joel Taylor, Sarah Taylor and Stacy Taylor, executors of the will of John Taylor, were also summoned to appear. [35]

1795 The will of Sarah (Quicksall) Taylor, of Nottingham Twp, Burlington County, was dated June 16. Son, Daniel Taylor, 5 shillings. Grandson, Nathan Taylor, £5 and red chest which was his grandfather's. Son, Stacy, 5 shillings; and to his daughter, Sarah, 10 shillings. Son, John Taylor, 5 shillings out of what is due me from him: remainder of said debt to his daughter, Sarah. Son, Joel Taylor, what may be due me from him, except a bond for £50 devised to me by his father; and to his daughter, Mary, £5. To Stacy Decou (son of Isaac Decou), my watch. To grandson, Clayton Decou (son of Joseph Decou), my mahogany desk. Eldest daughter, Mary Decou, 1/5 of residue. Dau, Ann Rogers, ½ of 1/5 of residue; the other ½ to granddaughter, Edith Wall; (daughter Ann's half to put at interest and paid her annually; at her decease the principal to be equally divided between her eldest daughters, i.e., Mary Scholey, Rachel Groom and Achsah Cubberley). Dau., Edith Lamb, 1/5 part of residue. Dau. Achsah Gaunt, ½ of 1/5 par: the other half to Joseph Decou's 3 children, i.e., Mary, Joseph and Clayton. Dau., Sarah Curtis, ½ of 1/5 part of residue; the other half to John Curtis's 2 children and my grandchildren, i.e., Tilton and Achsah Curtis. Executors- Grandson, Daniel Decou and granddaughter, Edith Wall. Witnesses - John Borden and Mary Decou, Jr. Proved Dec. 13, 1796. [36]

1796 The death of Sarah Taylor, widow of John Taylor, was recorded on 6th day, 11th month, 1798 [sic], in the Chesterfield Monthly Meeting Records. [37]

179? Sarah Taylor, widow of John Taylor, departed this life on 6 of month 11 (January). [38]

1796 The inventory for Sarah Taylor, dated November 21 and valued at £619.6, was made by Joseph M. Lawrie and Peter Welsh. [39]

1799 The account of the estate of Sarah Taylor was made to the Burlington Orphans Court On May 24, by Daniel Decow [grandson?] and Edith Wall [grand-daughter?]. Payments were made to Joel Taylor [son?], Stacy Decow [grandson?], and others. Legacy payments were made to Ann Rogers [daughter], Hannah Taylor [daughter-in-law?], and Achsa Gauntt Guardian [daughter]; moneys were held for legacies to Nathan Taylor [son], Sarah Taylor [daughter Sarah was already married?], and Mary Taylor [?]. Money was due from John Taylor [son?]. [40]

A Rogers bible record names John and Sarah Quicksall Taylor as parents of Ann, born 1751, who married Isaac Rogers, born 7th day, 7th month, 1735 and died 8th month 2nd day 1826. [41]

Daughters Mary Taylor married Isaac Decow and Acsah Taylor married Joseph Decou. [42]
