Notes for John Holloway and Mary Pharo

1681 "Mary daughter of James and Ann Farrow [Pharo] was borne ye 12th of ye ninth month 1681." [1] [2] [3] [4] Reported as 11 of month 9 at Woodhouse, Nottingham, West Jersey. [5]

1686 "John Holloway the son of Thomas Holloway and Gartery his wife was born at Froom on the third day of eighth month one thousand six hundred and eighty six." Dated 3 October (eighth month). [6] [7] [8] He may have been the same John Holloway who married Mary Pharo in New Jersey, as reported in the notes below.

Mary Pharo was a witness at several Quaker marriages, before she married John Holloway:

1695 Daniel Smith, of Burlington, and Mary Murfin, of Nottingham Township, were married on July 2 at Francis Davenport's house, Burlington County, New Jersey. Witnessed by Anne Farrah, Mary Farrah, Ann Farrah, and Jarves Farrah and others. [9]

1704 William Murfin and Sarah Bunting were married on August 8, at Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. Witnessed by Mary Pharo and others. [10].

1704 John Sykes and Joanna Murfin were married on October 19, at Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. Witnessed by Mary Pharo and others [11]

1704 John Holloway reportedly sailed for America about 1704 and settled at Crosswicks, Burlington County, New Jersey. [12]

1706 The marriage of John Holloway and Mary Pharo was not approved by the Chesterfield Quaker meeting:

1705 Mary Pharo, daughter of Anne Pharoah widow, was cautioned about "her entertaining upon marriageable accounts a man not suitable for her and not of good report; Friends looking upon the young woman to have been a sober girl, find they cannot be clear but caution her concerning the thing" at the Friends Chesterfield Monthly Meeting on 7 of month 4 (June). On 5 of month 5 "The Friends ordered to speak to Mary Pharoah did accordingly and finds her strait and hard and not willing to answer any thing to purpose, but in silence." [13] [14]

c 1706 John Holloway and Mary Pharo were married about this time, although no marriage record has been found. The Quaker records suggest that they were married between July 5, 1705 and June 6, 1706.

1706 "Also at this said meeting it is considered that Mary Pharoah or Holloway be spoak to concerning her Evil Action whether she will Clear the Truth she hath made some profession of and Friends; in as much as their care hathe been to advise and admonish seasonably; yet not withstanding she hath cast all behind her back & abused herself & married Man that is not of good Report therefore it is friends Judgement that she condemn it or friends must deny her. Mary Myers Susanna Farnsworth and Mary Bunting are to Speak to Mary Holloway as abovesaid." Recorded at the womens meeting at Chesterfield on 6th of the 4th month 1706. [15]

1706 "The Friends ordered to Speak to Mary Holloway bring her answer that she is willing to clear Truth and Friends but they find her not truly tender or throughly Sensible of her Transgression." Recorded at the womens meeting at Chesterfield on 1st of the 6th month 1706. [16]

1706 "Also at this said Meeting some lines Received from Mary Holloway by way of condemning her action; also the Meeting having otherwayes some account of her desire to come to our Meetings again Whereupon this Meeting orders Mary Bunting and Sarah Bunting to visit her and let her understand some reasons of Friends deliberation concerning her; also being willing to see something of Truth in Reallity appear not undervaluing the lines sent. Recorded at the womens meeting at Chesterfield on 5th of the 10th month 1706. [17]

1707 The womens meeting minutes at Chesterfield, on 6th of the 12th month 1706[/07], reported [18]:

Mary Bunting and Sarah Bunting acquaint the meeting that according to order of Last meeting they have been with Mary Holloway and finds her sensibly agreeable with what She hath written (vizt) "I have gone against the way of Truth and I have Sinned against the holy way of God and I have withstood all good counsel; but now if I have time in this World I desire that I may come to true Repentance before God of for what I have done." by me Mary Holloway.

And further Mary and Sarah Bunting aforesaid gives account that She the said Mary Holloway is further willing if Friends desire it to do anything they see requisite as to the more fully clearing of Truth either as to the Meeting or in making publick confession.

1709 John Hollway and Thomas Revell witnessed the will of Joshua Newbold, son of Michael Newbold. [19]

1715 Mary Holloway and James Pharo, perhaps her brother, witnessed a deed for George Nicholson of Chesterfield, Burlington County, New Jersey. [20]

1717 The will of John Holloway was dated February 16, 1716/17 at Chesterfield, Burlington County. John signed by his mark and named Wife Mary. Daughter Avis (under 18), sons George, John, James, all under 21; George is given to brother James Pharo, until he is 21: "My estate." Executors were wife Mary and brother James Pharo. Witness were Ralph Cowgill, Margaret Reckless, Joseph Reckless. Proved April 20, 1717. [21] [22]

1717 John Holloway died on February 12 at Burlington County, New Jersey. John Holloway was born on August 3, 1686. [no documentation] [23] [24]

1717 The inventory of John Holloway's personal estate was dated April 3, with value £155.-; made by Samuel Taylor and Joseph Reckless. [25]

c 1717 "The Town agrees that Mary Holloway shall not pay her Tax, being 7 shillings." [26]

1721 Mary Holloway was selected to "make orderly enquiry" about the marriage intentions of Archibald Silver and Mary Cowgill for the meeting at Chesterfield. [27]

1725 Avis Holloway married Samuel Schooley, son of Thomas Schooley, on May 27, in Chesterfield Twp, Burlington County, New Jersey. Witnessed by Mary Holloway, James Farow, George Holoway, James Holoway, and others. [28] [29]

1733 Mathew Champion of Burlington named friends of his deceased wife in his will including Garvis Pharo and his son James Pharo and James' sister Mary Hollwell's children. [30]

1750 "Mary Holloway the mother of James departed this life the 12th of 12th m 1749" [February 12 1749/50], in Burlington County, New Jersey. [31] [32]
