Research Notes:

The Great Migration Study Project states, [21]

Henry Glover
Origin: Unknown
Migration: 1634 (on 30 April 1634, "Henery Glover," aged 24, was enrolled at Ipswich as a passenger for New England on the Elizabeth [Hotten280]).
First Residence: Unknown

Comments: No record for a Henry Glover appears in New England between this passenger record and 1641. In 1641, a Henry Glover appeared in New Haven records, and in early 1643 another man of the name was admitted a townsman at Dedham [Savage 2:261, Pope 188].
Henry Glover of New Haven had children baptized there from 1641 through 1655 [FANH 660-61]. His wife was named Helena, and she was related in some way to Thomas Cooper of Springfield [GM
2:2:205-12, and the sources cited there]. Connections of this family of Springfield continued, as Henry's daughter Hannah married in 1663 David Ashley of Springfield.
Henry died at New Haven on 2 September 1689, and left a will, dated 20 August 1689, in which he made bequests to Mercy Mansfield, Abigail Burr and Sarah Ball, to the children of deceased son John Glover, and to "wife Ellin Glover" [NHPR 2:29]. The widow Helen, in her turn, died on 1 March 1697/8, intestate. The participants in the division of her estate were Moses Mansfield (who had married Mercy Glover), David Ashley (who had married Hannah Glover), John Ball (who had married Sarah Glover), Abigail (Glover) Burr (widow of Daniel Burr), and the surviving children of "Mr. John Glover late of New Haven, deceased" [NHPR 2:203-4]. (Why Hannah (Glover) Ashley, who was certainly alive at the time of her father's death, was not included in his will is not evident.)
All of the heirs mentioned in these two estates were among the children born at New Haven between 1641 and 1655 (or were children of these children). Thus, there is no evidence that this couple were married any earlier than 1641, and so on this evidence we would place the birth of Henry Glover of New Haven at about 1616. (The Torrey entry for Henry Glover of New Haven states his birth year as 1610, but this is not supported by any New Haven records. This date was almost certainly derived by assuming that which is to be proved, that the passenger of 1634 was the New Haven settler.)
On 2 January 1642/3, Henry Glover was admitted a townsman of Dedham [DeTR 1:93]. He was granted small parcels of land, and appeared regularly in the Dedham tax lists through 1652, always at the lower end of the assessments [DeTR 1:97, 152, 158, 161, 198]. He moved to Medfield, and died on 21 July 1665; his inventory was presented at court by his widow Abigail Glover [SPR 2:31]. There is no evidence that this couple had any children.
Based on the date of admission as townsman, we conclude that this Henry Glover was born no later that 1622. (The Torrey entry for Henry Glover of Dedham states that his birth year was 1603. This is derived from the erroneous claim that he was baptized at Prescot, Lancashire, on 15 February 1602/3, and was the younger brother of John Glover of Dorchester [Anna Glover, An Account of John Glover of Dorchester and his Descendants … (Boston 1867), pp. 31-32, 505-6]. Nothing in the records of either man connects John Glover of Dorchester with Henry Glover of Dedham. Furthermore, John Glover of Dorchester was quite wealthy, and held several high offices, whereas Henry Glover was at the opposite end of the economic scale.)
Nothing connects either Henry Glover (1641, New Haven) or Henry Glover (1642, Dedham) with the passenger of 1634. If the passenger of 1634 were to be identified with either of these other men, we would have to explain how a young adult, beyond the usual age of servitude, could live for seven or nine years in New England without leaving a trace. In the case of the New Haven man, we would also have to accept a first marriage at about thirty-one years of age. We conclude that these records represent three distinct Henry Glovers, and that there is no identifiable record for the 1634 passenger.

On 27 December 1682, Henry Glover of New Haven sold to Thomas Trowbridge Senior of New Haven "a piece of land with a warehouse" in New Haven "being upon the bank fronting to the dwelling house formerly belonging to Henry Rutherford"; signed by "Henry Glover" and "Elen Glover" [NHLR 1:128; NHTR 2:286]. On 6 February 1683[/4?], Henry Glover of New Haven sold to John Clarke Senior of New Haven "five acres and half of land, ... which was formerly John Charls first division on the west side" [NHLR 1:200].

On 16 February 1684/5, Mr. Henry Glover held two lots in the third division in New Haven [NHLR 1:224].

On 3 June 1685, an inventory of the land held by Henry Glover in New Haven was entered, listing the following parcels: "one house lot containing half an acre and twenty rods ... which at first belonged to James Pruden deceased ... with the dwelling house, barn and other buildings standing on the said home lot"; "one parcel of land being in the quarter commonly called Mr. Goodyear's quarter containing in quantity nine acres"; "one parcel containing twelve acres ... lying in the aforesaid Goodyear's quarter"; "one parcel lying on the west side within the first division of the said Goodyear's quarter containing six acres"; "one parcel lying in the second division on the west side of the abovesaid quarter which belonged to the lots of Bayly and Stonnell containing 104 acres"; "three parcels of land in the third division, one of them bought of William Pringle"; "one parcel of meadow containing four acres, two of which belonged to the allotment of the aforesaid James Pruden and the other bought of Mr. John Wakeman deceased"; "one parcel of land containing 100 acres being in the second division of the Hertfordshire quarter"; "one parcel of land in the second division of the Suburbs Quarter containing eighteen acres, which at first belonged to John Charles deceased and passed from him to Martin Tichenor, and by the said Tichenor deeded to the said Glover"; "one parcel of meadow land containing three acres"; "one parcel of land in the neck containing two acres and a half"; "several parcels of land bought of Mr. Samuel Wakeman and Mr. Samuel Kitchell"; "one parcel of meadow land containing seventeen acres and one quarter"; "one parcel of upland containing forty-two acres [and] one quarter ... of the first division land"; "one parcel of upland in the second division (bought of the said Wakeman and Kitchell)"; "one parcel in the neck ... in quantity nineteen acres and a half"; "one parcel of land in the neck upon the account of James Pruden's lot containing one acre and half"; "one parcel more in the neck containing six acres belonging to Bayly and Stonell's lots"; "one parcel in the Suburbs Quarter containing five acres"; "one parcel of land in the first division on the west side in Hertfordshire quarter upon the account of the aforesaid Pruden's lot, containing three acres and a half"; "one parcel of meadow containing five acres ... lying in the west meadow at rear of Mr. Goodyear's quarter"; "one parcel of meadow at the upper end of Malibone Cove containing three acres"; "one parcel of meadow containing three acres"; "in Solitary Cove a parcel of meadow about two acres"; and "six acres of land in the quarter called Mr. Newman's quarter, being part of Mrs. Eldred's lot" [NHLR 1:276].

In his will, dated 20 August 1689 and proved on an unknown date, "Henry Glover of New Haven" bequeathed that "which remains undisposed of already by deeds of gift, which deeds I do hereby ratify and confirm," to "my beloved daughters Mercy Mansfield, Abigaile Burre & Sarah Ball all my outlands both in the second & third division, with such meadows as are not already disposed of by deed of gift ... to be equally divided between them"; to "my loving daughter-in-law Joanna Thompson (formerly Glover) as a token of my love one cow"; to "my three grandchildren, daughters of my late son John Glover deceased, to each of them a cow, as they attain the age of eighteen years"; to "my aforesaid two daughters Mercy Mansfield and Abigaile Burre fifteen acres of upland lying in New Haven Neck ... in two parcels, the one thirteen acres & a half ..., & the other one acre & half ... to be equally divided between them"; to "my aforesaid daughter Sarah Ball eight acres & half lying in New Haven Neck in two parcels, six acres in the quarter called Grigson's quarter, & two acres & half in the Suburbs quarter"; to "my aforesaid three daughters Mercy, Abigaile & Sarah," "all my right in one pasture or in the common"; residue to "my dear & beloved wife Ellin Glover, ... desiring her to consider the afflicted state of my daughter Mansfield, & also for the promoving [i.e., promoting] & encouraging of his education"; "my dear & beloved wife Ellin Glover" to be sole executrix, and after her death "my loving sons-in-law Moses Mansfield & Dan[ie]ll Burre" to be executors [NHPR 2:2:29].

The inventory of the estate of "Mr. Henry Glover deceased," taken 21 October 1689, totalled 285lb. 10s. 7d., of which 112lb. 12s. was real estate: "land & meadows," 96lb. 12s.; and "land," 16lb., along with "the right of two 600lb. lots in the ox pasture" [NHPR 2:2:30].

The inventory of the estate of "Mrs. Hellena Glover" totalled 123lb. 19s., of which 30lb. was real estate: "meadow," 20lb.; and "9 acres of 3d division land," 10lb. [NHPR 2:2:203].

On 28 April 1698, whereas "Mrs. Hellena Glover late of New Haven deceased" left a writing which conveyed her testamentary wishes, but did not live to have it drawn up formally, "Moses Mansfeild of the town and county of New Haven in New England, for myself & in behalf of the children of my late dear wife Mercy, David Ashley of the town of Westfeild in the county of Hampshire in New England by & with the consent of Hannah my present wife & John Ball of said New Haven by & with the consent of Sarah my present wife and Abigaile Burr relict of Mr. Daniell Burr late of Fairfeild in New England deceased," the funeral charges and debts of "our honored mother the said Hellena Glover" having been paid, along with "an addition of five pounds to be paid ... unto the surviving children of Mr. John Glover late of New Haven deceased," the residue is to be "equally divided among the said Moses, David, John & Abigaile" [NHPR 2:2:203-4].

Birth: By about 1616 (based on estimated date of marriage).
Death: New Haven 2 September 1689 (as "Mr. Henry Glover") [NHVR 70].
Marriage: By 1641 Helena _____. She died at New Haven on 1 March 1697/8 [NHVR 70]. (Henry Glover was in some way brother to Thomas Cooper [1635, Windsor], which has led a number of prominent genealogists to speculate on what that might imply about the identity of Glover's wife [TAG 23:95-97, 48:208-14; Hale, House 498; Gillespie Anc 164; GM 2:2:205-12].)
Children:
i Mary Glover, bp. New Haven 12 June 1641 [NHChR 10]; no further record.
ii Mercy Glover, bp. New Haven 16 August 1643 [NHChR 12]; m. New Haven 5 May 1664 Moses Mansfield [NHVR 20].
iii Hannah Glover, bp. New Haven 26 May 1646 [NHChR 14]; m. New Haven 24 November 1663 David Ashley [NHVR 20].
iv John Glover, bp. New Haven 8 October 1648 [NHChR 15]; m. New Haven 7 December 1671 Joanna Daniel [NHVR 31].
v Abigail Glover, born New Haven 29 April 1651 [NHVR 6]; d. New Haven 20 August 1651 [NHVR 4].
vi Abigail Glover, born New Haven 31 [sic] July 1652 [NHVR 8], bp. New Haven 24 July 1652 [NHChR 16]; m. New Haven 11 December 1678 Daniel Burr [NHVR 47].

Comments: Henry Glover was obviously a prominent and respected member of his community, judging by the many offices he held and the quantity of land he owned. He was, however, occasionally present in court to answer for minor infractions, such as defective fences, excessive swine, and for "cutting wood disorderly" [NHTR 1:27, 219, 275, 337, 476-79].

Jacobus states, [22]

It was formerly supposed that Helena of Ellen w. of Henry Glover was a Wakeman, but the English wills published in the Wakeman Genealogy make it clear that she was not. Prof. Dexter in New Haven Town Records, Vol. 2, p. 9, suggested that she was a Russell, and this was followed in the text, but place in brackets to indicate that it was hypothetical. It is perhaps meor likely that she was a sister of William Davis, who m Martha Wakeman, and whose da. m. William RUssell. The will of John Wakeman refers to his sister Davis and sister Glover. Martha Davis was his sister by blood and if Helena was sister of William Davisthat would make her the sister-in-law of John Wakeman's sister. Martha Davis names two of the Glover children in her will, and William Russell left his children in the care of Henry Glover and his wife.

For the will of William Russell, who named Henry and Ellen Glover as the guardians of his children, see the notes of William Russell and his wife Sarah Davis. [23]

For the wills of William Davis and his wife Martha Wakeman, see their notes. [24]
