1257 William de Spineto purchased land in Coughton. [1]

762. (Quinz. of St. John B. [July 8, 1257]) William de Spyneto, pl. Hugh de Burleye and Joan his wife, imped. ½ virgate of land in Cocton. Pea of warrnaty of charter. Imped. acknowledged right of pl., as of their gift; to hold of them and heirs of Joan, by a yearly rent of 1lb. of cumin at Mich., and by doing what belongs thereupon to the King's scutage, when it happens, for all service; with warranty. Cons. 4 marks of silver.

1258/59 William de Spineto and Joan his wife sold land in Eston and Stoke (Lincolnshire). [2]

No. 33. At Westminster; in eight days of St. Hilary, 43 Henry III, [20 January, 1258-9].
Between Nicholas de Lunderthorp, querent, and William de Spineto and Joan his wife, impedients, of the fourth part of one knight's fee in Eston and Stok'.
Plea of warranty of charter. William and Joan have acknowledged the tenement to be the right of Nicholas, as that which he has of their gift: to hold to him and his heirs of them and the heirs of Joan for ever; rendering therefor yearly one clove gillyflower for all service; and doing therefor to the chief lords of that fee all the other services which to the tenement belong. [Warranty.] And for this Nicholas has given William and Joan 50 marks of silver.

1271 December 17. Warwickshire, "William de Spineto and Joan his wife" gave "half a mark for having a writ ad terminum. Order to the sheriff of Warwickshire." [3]

1274 William de l'Espyneye/de Spyney and Joan his wife purchased land in Coughton and Sambourne. [4]

912. Coughton: Sambourne (3 wks of Mich. [October 24]) William de l'Espyneye and Joan his wife, pl. John, son of Master John de Bibbesl', and Constance his wife, imped. 1/2 of 2 messuages and of a carucate of land in Cocton and Saunburn'. Plea of Warranty of charter. Imped. acknowledged right of pl., as of their gift; to hold to pl. and heirs of William of imped. and heirs of Constance by a rose rent at St. John B. f.a.s.s.service in chief. Imped. also granted, to hold with the above the reversion of tennements held in dowere by Constance, who was the wife of Simon de Cocton, of the inheritance of the imped. Constance, in the said vills; with warranty. Cons. 75 marks of silver. This concord was made in the presence of the said Constance, who was wife of Simon, who acknowledged she had no right in the premises save in dower.

915. Sambourne: Coughton (Mor. of St. Martin [November 12]) William de Spyney (spyneto) and Joan his wife, pl. Hugh de Norfolk and Joan his wife, imped. 2/3 of a caracate of land and of 1/2 of messuages and of an acre of meadow in Saunburn and Cocton. Plea of warranty of charter. Imped. acknowledged right of pl., as of their gift; to hold of them and heirs of Joan by a rent of 1d at Mich. for all service; together with the reversion of 1/3 of the said 2/3 after the death of Constance, who was wife of Simon Cocton, who holds in dower of the inheritance of the imped. Joan; with warranty. Cons. 40 marks of silver. This concord was made (as in 912).

1275. "Memorandum that on the feast of the Annunciation, the prior of Stodeley, for himself and his canons, and William de Spineto for himself and Joan his wife, appeared before the bishop, Geoffrey, his chaplain, Nicholas, rector of the church of Ikomb, and Thomas the cross-bearer, concerning a certain violence said to have been done to the said prior, and as to the payment of tithes, whereupon an agreement was come to, and the sentence upon the said William and his wife was released. Mandate therefore from the bishop for the release of the said sentence." [5]

1279 "Mandate to the archdeacon to pronounce the absolution granted to William de Spineto. Dated at Aluech', the 8th of the Kalends of September." [August 25] [6]

1284 William de Spineto received absolution from excommunication and was released from prison. His son Roger gave a bond for the payment of a debt to the executors of the late Archbishop of York. [7]

Mandate to the dean of Warwick to publish the absolution from the sentence of excommunication granted to William de Spineto of Cocton. Dated at Hembur' in the Salt Marsh, the 7th of the Kalends of May. [April 25]

Mandate to the sheriff of Warwick for the delivery from prison of the said William de Spineto. Mention in it of Roger, the clerk, his son. Dated as above.

Fol. 206d. Bond by Roger, son of William de Spineto, to pay to the bishop 46li. in yearly instalments for a debt owing to the executors of the late Archbishop of York, the bishop's brother.

1289 On May 19, the Warden of London sent a writ to the Sheriff of Warwickshire concerning a debt that Roger de Spineto and William de Spineto, his brother, owed to John de Basing, citizen of London. [8]

1289 November "Enrolment of grant by Godfrey, bishop of Worcester, to the king of his land in Wasthull in the manor of Alveth', co. Worcester, which the bishop acquired from William de Wasthull, and all the land in Cokton, co. Warwick, which the bishop acquired from Roger de Spineto. Witnesses: Sir John de Bello Campo, Sir John de Cantilupo, Sir John de Langel[eye], Sir William le Poer, Sir Robert de Bracy, Sir Roger Corbet, Sir Henry de Ribbesford, knights.
Memorandum, that this charter remains in a box in the chest in which the rolls of chancery are kept at the New Temple, London." [9]

1291 "Aug. 9. Berwick-on-Tweed. Letters for William de Spineto, staying in Ireland, nominating Ralph son of Ranulph de Castello of Cotton and Robert son of Walter de Hereford his attorneys for two years." [10]

1293 "June 22. Westminster. William de Spineto, staying in Ireland, nominating Henry de Spineto and Henry Gamel for one year." [11]

1293 "Grant by Godfrey Giffard, bishop of Worcester, to William son of William de Spineto, of the Manor of Cocton juxta Spernovere in the County of Warwick. Dated at Wydindon, the feast of St. Luke the Evangelist [October 18], 21 Edward I." [12]

1293/94 On January 27, William del Espyne and Joan his wife granted Coughton to William son of William del Espyne. [13]

Cons., a grant to def. of 100 s. yearly for life of Joan (at Eas. and Mich.)

1294 "Oct. 12. Westminster. Inspeximus and confirmation of a writing of quit-claim, dated at Whythindon, the day of St. Luke the Evangelist, 21 Edward I, whereby Godfrey Giffard, bishop of Worcester, granted in fee simple to William son of William de Spineto his manor of Cotton by Spernouner, co. Warwick, with the lands, tenements and rents, as well of his free men as of his villeins, and with the meadows, feedings, pastures, wards, reliefs and escheats, and also all other lands which he acquired from Roger de Spineto; and no grant of the king made at the bishop's instance of the said land to the bishop and his successors and the church of Worcester shall prejudice the said William or his heirs. Witness: Sirs Gerard de Caumville, Peter de Lench and Robert de Valle, knights; Richard de Peyto, Robert Lyvet and others." [14]
