Notes for John de Grey and Hawise

1227 Hawise de Grey, mother of Walter de Grey, archbishop of York, was given respite concerning a debt. [1]

5 Sept. Windsor. ... Concerning a demand to be placed in respite. Order to the sheriff of Oxfordshire to place in respite, until Easter in the twelfth year, the demand he makes by summons of the Exchequer from Hawise de Gray, mother of W. archbishop of York, for the £70 that are exacted for scutage from the land of Oliver Deyncourt from the time when that land was in the custody of John de Gray, formerly bishop of Norwich.

1235 The debt of Hawise, mother of the archbishop of York was placed in respite. [2]

18 Aug. Westminster. For Hawise, mother of the archbishop of York . Order to the sheriff of Oxfordshire to place in respite, until 15 days from Michaelmas in the nineteenth year, the demand that he makes by summons of the Exchequer from Hawise, mother of the archbishop of York, for the portion that she says falls to her of the fine of 100 m. which the county of Oxfordshire made before the justices last itinerant in that county, for which portion she ought not to answer, as she says, so that it may then be discussed at the Exchequer whether she ought to be quit or not.

1242 The land that Hawise, wife of John fitz Alan, had held in dower was taken into the king's hand.

19 Sept. Rotherfield Greys. Concerning the lands of Hawise, who was the wife of John fitz Alan. Order to J. Lestrange, justice of Chester, to take into the king's hand all lands formerly of Hawise, who was the wife of John fitz Alan, which she held in dower in his bailiwick, unless he has previously taken them into the king's hand, and he is to keep them safely so that he answers for them at the Exchequer together with the other lands formerly of the same John that are in her custody. 20 Sept. Wallingford. Concerning the manor of Keevil. The king has committed to Robert de Dandely the manor of Keevil, which Hawise, who was the wife of John fitz Alan, held in dower, to keep for as long as it pleases the king, so that he answers for the issues of the same manor at the Exchequer. Order to the sheriff of Wiltshire to deliver the aforesaid manor to him to keep, as aforesaid. Witness W. archbishop of York.[4]

27 Oct. Mortlake. ... To the sheriff of Sussex for the king. Order to the sheriff of Sussex to take into the king's hand all lands formerly of Hawise, who was the wife of John fitz Alan, in his bailiwick, unless he has taken them before, and to keep them safely until the king orders otherwise, so that he answers for the issues of the aforesaid lands at the Exchequer. He is, however, to hand over the demesnes of the aforesaid lands at farm or to the men of the aforesaid lands to part sow in the manner whereby the king will benefit most, and he is to signify the names of the aforesaid lands and what he has done herein to the W. archbishop of York without delay.
