Notes for William de Hardreshull and Bertha

1199 William de Hardreshull paid a fine to obtain a judgment concerning whether Grace de Saleby was the child of Thomas and Agnes Saleby. [1] For more about the case, see the notes of Thomas and Agnes Saleby. [2]

William de Aldresull offers to the lord the King 500 marks to have the judgment of the King's court concerning the heritage which he claims against the daughter of Thomas de Saleby, and for an inquisition to be made whether she was the daughter of the said Thomas, or a supposititious child.

1218 On May 15 William de Hardreshull ["de Ardrisul"] was a pledge for Robert Marmion "that he will faithfully keep Tamworth castle. And if it happens that the king wishes to have the castle, if necessary he will render it to him without difficulty and contradiction."[3] [4]

1221 William de Hardreshull was granted seisin of his land in Clayworth on November 10. [5]

10 Nov. Westminster. Nottinghamshire. To the sheriff of Nottinghamshire. William de Hardredesfeld' has made fine with the king by 20 m. for having the vill of Clayworth with appurtenances, which falls to him by hereditary right and for which he has a charter of King Henry, grandfather of the king. He has given the king surety for the aforesaid 20 m. by R. earl of Chester and Lincoln and Falkes de Bréauté, of which he is to render 5 m. at Easter in the sixth year, 5 m. at the Nativity of St. John the Baptist in the same year, 5 m. at Michaelmas in the same year, and 5 m. at Easter in the seventh year. Order to cause William to have full seisin without delay with all appurtenances in his bailiwick. Witness H. etc. By the same. Before the king's council.

1222 William of Hartshill ["de Hardredeshull" in the image] was appointed a justice on January 30. [6]

30 Jan. Westminster. Warwickshire. The king has constituted William of Hartshill, William of Arden, William de Curly1 and Ralph son of Ralph as his justices to take the assize of novel disseisin which William Hoese and Margaret, his wife, arraigned before the king's justices when they were to come to the parts of Warwick against Alice de Mohun, concerning a tenement in Stourton. The king has also constituted the same as justices to take the assize of mort d'ancestor before them which the aforesaid William and Margaret arraigned before the aforesaid justices against the aforesaid Alice, concerning two carucates of land and two mills with appurtenances in the aforesaid vill of Stourton. Order to the four aforesaid justices to convene at Warwick in the octaves of the Close of Easter to take those assizes, ready to do what pertains to justices according to the custom and law2 of the kingdom of England. Order to the sheriff of Warwickshire to cause the aforesaid assizes to come before the same at the day and place aforesaid, and to take security from William and Margaret for three palfreys to the king's use for the writ. Order to the aforesaid sheriff to have at the Exchequer the roll of the amercements of those who fall into mercy by this assize taken in his county, and to answer for this then. Witness H. de Burgh etc.

1226 William de Hardreshull died before October 27 when his son Robert was granted seisin of William's land in Clayworth. [7]

Robert of Hartshill [de Hardredeshull in the image] has made fine with the king for his relief, by 40s., for having seisin of the land that William of Hartshill, his father, held of the king in chief in Clayworth that [falls to the same Robert by inheritance], and the king has taken the homage of the same Robert herein. Order to the sheriff of Nottinghamshire that, having accepted etc., full seisin etc.
